EDIT: In response to Bunny: The land that the US covers was last conquered in the 1600/1700's, I would imagine, around the time that the Europeans colonised it. If you mean the country/nation, then The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has also never been conquered. Not that I care either way, as I'm a New Zealander.
The land, yes, but the country itself is an entirely different matter. It doesn't take much to walk into a relatively empty space that isn't owned by anyone and say "I own this now. This is mine."

As I said, outside of America, "the war" refers to World War II. I was not aware that in America, or possibly Britain (although I doubt it), "the war" would refer to anything different, regardless of context.

EDIT: Unless it was a Vietnam war vet talking in a stereotypical way about "the war". Although they'd probably refer to it as "'nam" rather than "the war".
I do not understand the hangup. I do not understand how the context could be confused at all. I think you're just trying to save yourself right now. You can be honest, it's okay. People are wrong sometimes.
