Why wouldn't she sacrifice her sole guardian? She herself was gonna die straight after fighting Sin, was she not? Granted Barthello would've become the next Sin (oh god that would've been hilarious) and Dona would've had to wait a reeeeaaally long time to rejoice for eternity in the Farplane but there you go. It would've worked out eventually.
