Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0: You can (not) redo

Did I really wait more than three years for half a movie? The first half dropped all the character development made in 2.0 in favor of some space opera style post-apocalyptic action scenes that are vaguely reminiscent of Battlestar Galactica and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (also made by the same studio). By the time the story gets more interesting, as the viewer you realize it's just too smurfing late too care. There is no excuse for putting the audience through an hour of painfully weird and pointless scenes before showing us a bit of what the hell is going on! The ending was decent, but the movie could've just been so much more considered the time and effort put into it.

At least I'm everything but hyped for the last part in the series. Rebuild will never be able to live up to the original Neon Genesis Evangelion, despite all the time, money and technology they have available. You can not redo indeed, mr. director
This twenty-year-old boy was distinguished from childhood by strange qualities, a dreamer and an eccentric. A girl fell in love with him, and he went and sold her to a brothel...

All directors have a personal style unless they're completely boring. Films are people's personal stamps of themselves so of course their stylistic choices are going to be a part of that as well. Some directors are more concerned with the narrative than the stylistic, but I think Tarantino is actually one of the few directors who have managed to mix both things nicely in some of his films. But yeah, T is not for everyone especially if you're someone who can't appreciate genre films.

Saw Django Unchained last night. I quite enjoyed it, but it just didn't quite match up to how his films usually are. They generally deal with redemption/personal quests/revenge, etc, so that was fine. I feel like often Tarantino's films start in the middle and work their way back to tell the beginning of the story, so it was a bit strange to see it just go from start to finish without some crazy twist.

I am completely disappointed by the old-timey western songs and trout that could have been used in this film and that those opportunities were wasted on rap and trout instead It would have been such a perfect fit!

Best goddamn shootouts I've ever seen, though, tell you what. I really enjoyed watching them sharpshoot. Loved Christoph Waltz, loved Jamie Foxx. And Leonardo DiCaprio, holy trout. Perhaps the best role I've ever seen him in. This is probably old news, but I remember coming across this business about him cutting his hand when the film came out which made it so much more interesting to watch him remain completely and utterly in character during those scenes.

    8/10. Well done.

Haven't gotten it yet, but I still look forward to Eva 3.0.

I think the first two movies actually move along a lot nicer then the series, and fix some of the serious pacing issues. Though I guess I'll hold my breath for 3.

    Anyway....

    Secret of NIHM - 9/10

God this movie is great. It's been at least ten years since I last watched it, and it turns out Nostalgia didn't fail me. An absolutely beautiful movie in pretty much every way.

Inability to sleep and Netflix has brought me yet another movie!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 7.5/10

Really the only problem is how slow the first half of this movie goes, and a fairly bad handled couple subplots. I kind of liked the one where the second guy was using information he had to get with this chick. But the other plots were rather badly handled I felt, with the Doctor and the assistant and what not.

The main plot going on though was pretty awesome, and the visuals ranged from alright to astounding. I loved when he tried to turn the guy around, but only caught a blur of for the face. It's also bizzarely touching.

One of the odder movies I've seen as of late, but pretty good regardless.

I totally forgot about this when writing my other post. It was a genuinely odd soundtrack. I'm not saying it was rubbish or good, but... odd. But then, Young Guns II is a great example of how you can get a rockstar to do a soundtrack for a Western and still end up with it working well.
And Leonardo DiCaprio, holy trout. Perhaps the best role I've ever seen him in.
Out of curiosity, which Leo movies have you seen? =o

And did you get what I mean when I said it reminds you that you're watching a film? xD Most of the film is rather 'realistic' to some degree and then suddenly they pull some exploding body into it and wait what? It probably wouldn't be so noticeable if it weren't for the really inconsistent deaths. Some explode, some just get a tiny red shot mark, some bleed profusely, some don't bleed at all.

Seems we gave it a similar rating in the end, though.

Oh, I didn't notice inconsistent deaths. I didn't have any complaints about the exploding. In fact, all of the gore and business seems really realistic to me. See, this is me getting so into watching that I don't notice these things!

Tell you what reminded me that I was watching a smurfing movie, though, was yeah, that soundtrack. I would have been equally as upset if a rockstar had done the soundtrack. It needed an OST filled with classic old western tunes to have really completed it for me. Tarantino generally has such great music paired with his films, so I was a little surprised.

I don't know all whatever Leo films I've seen. I may have exaggerated a bit, because his best acting will always and forever be in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and I quite liked him in The Departed and Romeo + Juliet. Don't get me wrong, he has some great movies. It might have just been the part for him in this as well, but I just so loved him and thought he did it perfectly. Some of the most insanely passionate and believable acting I've seen come from him.

Realistic. xD I guess we have different ideas of realism. >=P

Bon Jovi in Young Guns II. Blaze of Glory and other such songs. Fitted the movie fantastically... they were all very highly influenced by Western themes, though, so that probably worked in their favour. I don't think you can get Wester-influenced rap working. xD

You should watch pretty much every Leo movie from 2002 onwards. Every one I've seen so far has been fantastic. So.. Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island, Inception. Obviously now Django Unchained too. I should probably check out the few I've missed... my favourite of that lot is probably Shutter Island, though, which if you have the time to watch is a must-see.

I definitely think he was better in Django than he was in Shutter Island, but I didn't really enjoy that movie, to each his own though.

    The Rebound

Randomly watched it on TV. It was pretty good for a romantic comedy, I loved the ending.

    Also got around to watching....

    Tromeo and Juliet - 8/10

You know, I don't think so bad it's good applies to Troma films. They revel in how bad their movies are, and I think they are actually getting the intended reaction from you. And god the movie is hilarious.

    The Intouchables (Untouchable) - 5/5

I was grinning for what felt like 80% of this movie, and the other 20% was just a transition to another smile. Beautiful and hilarious. Watch it. If you're anything like I am, you'll be better off not having watched any trailer.
