When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about new discoveries of human evolutionary history, which suggest that there was a human-like dwarf species in existence for some time.

So yes, hobbits were real, but they died out because of their shortness and hairy feet and their home being destroyed by Sauron's forces.
