I cannot think of what word rhymes with vase, certainly not race, so I say it "wrong", I guess.

I don't think the word vase is very important, at least not compared to the other pronunciation debates we've had. "Vahz" is supposed to be the correct way, but who really gives a trout about that in America? Both are acceptable.

If you said "vayz" or "vace" in a foreign country or in high society, they'd probably laugh at you, but then you can laugh back at how ridiculous their stupid laugh sounds.
