    Chocobo Young and Old

Does anyone miss when the series legitimately had characters who were pre-teens and retirees? Not fifteen years old with mommy issues or thirty-year olds that are treated like they're on death's door? Or are you happy we mostly stick to older teens exclusively?

Not to mention all the young people who are really 3000 years old so you won't have to feel guilty about buying their lewd model kits to display in your sex altar.

Yes. It's not just FF though, I find Japanese games in general have really made a trend of making their average characters younger and younger over time. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

But yeah, Final Fantasy is actually one of the few JRPG series where I can still play as a person who isn't in school and I like that. I am thankful they haven't gone full preteen yet. I'm okay with playing a 18 year old or higher, personally, and enjoy it a lot more than playing a character who is 16 or younger. 17 is 50/50 for me, apparently, because I couldn't decide if it makes me say "Eh, I don't mind this age in my games" or "Nah this is just too young".

I would like to see more variance though. I liked characters like Cid, Auron, Barret, Laguna.

I'm actually kind of curious now, I might put together a spreadsheet to get some stats on this...

    Double post, don't care:

    it big

Interesting. Getting older on average, but far less deviation from the average of roughly 23.

young people sure, old people sure. a mix? not so much.

Some old dude escorting some teenagers and a couple pre-teens is smurfing weird when you think about it more than a few seconds

Old people acting as mentors for young people is actually one of the most common scenarios in the entire world and basically every teenager is subjected to it, and so are many 18-22 year olds. Even if you don't count early career workers, who also experience the same thing.

On the one hand, I do kinda miss it, but on the other in a game like FF all it boils down to is aesthetic and a couple of jokes. It’s not like Persona 2 Eternal Pumishment where all your characters are closer to their 30s and actually deal with real life issues adults do and the themes of the game are adjusted accordingly. Having Tellah of Strago in basically gives you some aching back jokes while the twins and Relm are there to be wild and bratty. It’s fun to have them, but I don’t really see them as a necessity, especially since the aesthetic of the games aims more for realism nowadays

conveniently, all the children in FF are orphans or estranged so they don't have to deal with the complexities of parental consent, etc

I don't mind playing as teenagers, although the JRPG obsession with youth borders on the creepy at times. It would be nice if more games had older protags, but I understand why that isn't the case.

I would like to see something like Dragon ball which a weird kid with a tail looking for a dirty old man as a mentor to train and compete in some world martial art tournament.
