    Life of a Fansite

Hi everyone, we have some major changes to EoFF to announce.

    Site
After a lot of thought and discussion, we've decided to end the EoFF frontsite as it is, and the Editors and Social Media Manager titles are no more. Realistically a smaller site like EoFF can't compete with the big boys for getting news out, and by the time we've got something up most gamers have digested the news, commented on it and moved on.

Likewise, you will have probably noticed the number of features and articles drying up. As we all get older and have busier lives, EoFF has found it harder to retain staff to produce this content. Writing about the same topic week in, week out to the standard we have enjoyed over the years is basically a job and many bigger sites do pay freelancers to make this type of content. Unfortunately EoFF will never have the sort of income which means paying our staff is feasible, and so we think rather than have a sporadic amount of articles that slowly dwindle down, it's best to quit while we're ahead.

On that note, I would just like to pay tribute to all of the content creators - be they Editors or Site Staff - over the years who have devoted countless hours of their time to produce outstanding content for Eyes on Final Fantasy. The frontsite is often overlooked in favour of the forums, but the frontsite has not only drawn in the members who make up those forums, it has also informed, provided help and entertained tens of thousands of people over the years. Thank you so much.

    Staff
With the disbandment of Editors and SMM, this does affect staff. Some of the team will be leaving us. I'd firstly like to pay tribute to Colonel Angus, who has been a delight to work with over the past few years. Likewise, Depression Moon, who we would like to wish the best of luck to in his own projects. Finally Pike is taking a breather from staff activities. Like Frosty the Snowman, she may return this winter, but if not then I would like to give a massive thank you to her for all she has done for EoFF down the years. I am sure you will join me in thanking all three of these great members.

The remaining staff - Freya, Fynn, Night Fury and Pumpkin have now become Cid's Knights. I know what an immediate response will be - if EoFF has less activity, why do you need more moderators?

You may have noticed an absolute deluge of spambots over the past few months (and if you haven't, hurray!). Personally speaking I have never seen higher numbers during my 11+ years on staff. We've been taking measures to stop them from even joining such as banning email hosts and IP addresses, but it's like playing whack-a-mole. You ban one bot's Chinese IP and then a bot pops up making the same exact posts the next day with a Colombian IP. It's something of a Sisyphean task!

Our existing forums staff were all localised in one part of the world, and the new additions to the team come from a variety of time zones which should hopefully give us more coverage and spambot threads won't be left clogging up General Chat for several hours.

    Frontsite
The other reason for merging staff in this way is that we've now changed the scope of the frontsite. We still want to keep an active "shop front" to continue to gain new members for our community. We've begun a new series called Featured Threads. Every couple of weeks or so we'll highlight some of the excellent discussions we have here and post about them on the frontsite. You can see how this will work here! We also intend to start producing more regular site polls so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Despite these changes and despite us all having busier lives, EoFF is not going anywhere and the forums community will continue for many years yet. Thank you everyone for being here and for your support. I look forward to having many more great times and laughs with you all.

From the Desk of Night Fury

The lovely Night Fury has asked me to post this on her behalf:

    Hey everyone!

So we've had a bit of a shake-up in staff the last few weeks! As you can see, I've returned to the team as a Social Media Manager - which can only mean that the wonderful Lone Wolf Leonhart has stepped down. You may also have noticed a cheeky wee Scot running around without his staff title too, Dat Matt! We are so thankful for the work that both these lads have provided us. That said, we may not be saying au revoir to Dat Matt just yet, and he may well make a return to staff in the near future if he can ever tear himself away from Final Fantasy XIV.

"Okay Night Fury, but we really aren't that bothered about all this... What about OUR titles?"

WELL! Let me tell you something - the staff made the decision to give everyone and their dog the Site Contributor title! If you've noticed this particular title on your profile, you've received it because you've recently contributed to the Eyes on Final Fantasy frontsite! Going forward, this title will be given to any and all continuing* contributors of our frontsite as a way of saying thanks for all your hard work!

*the title is temporary in that it is held while you are contributing, they will be removed after time if no more contributions are made.

Finally, us folks up in the Shinra HQ would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! We've had a long ride of a year and it's drawing to a close. We would like to thank all of you for your ongoing support of the site, and for continuing to be part of the family!
A warm welcome to her back onto staff, and a big thanks to Dat Matt, Lone Wolf Leonhart and, well, all of you potential contributors!

    Hey guys,

Following on from our previous announcement, we have removed the Recognised Member title. Thanks for all your feedback on the matter.

The removal of the title has paved the way for a new addition that you may have already noticed on the postbit - the Contributions list. At the moment, all former Recognised Members (and other former staff who opted to not take the title) have a contribution listed for what they were given the title for. These also show on the individual members' profile.

The Contributions list allows for anyone who has contributed in some way to Eyes on FF to have that acknowledgement on their profile, and we're hoping that with some input from you we can flesh out everyone's Contributions. We want to give everyone credit for the things they have done, and will do in future for EoFF, and we feel that this is an ideal way of doing so.

So, we'd love to hear from you about anything you feel should be considered for the Contributions list. Have you successfully run an event? Have you helped out in some way by producing content for the frontsite? Anything else you've done that you feel deserves a mention? Or any thoughts on the Contributions list in general?

As always, we welcome your feedback on the changes, and look forward to hearing from you.

The Recognized Member Title and a new addition to staff

    Hey everyone,

We're currently having a look at user titles and would welcome some feedback.

We have been looking at the Recognized Member title and it is likely we will be removing it. Our thinking is that it has become a little bloated with over 100 members now having the title, and as some of them were given out for things that were done many years ago the meaning behind it has been lost. It was also created to help non-staff members manage events with the ability to open and close threads and this has perhaps become less necessary. Similarly, many of the initial benefits such as maximum Mognet (Private Message) capacity are now given out to all members by default.

Perhaps more notably, we want to encourage active and consistent contributions to the community rather than offering permanent rewards for temporary work. We want to find ways to encourage our best minds and personalities to keep shining at EoFF, and to more consistently reward those who persist.

With that said, we know the title means a lot to those who have it. The contributions that non-staff members have made to EoFF over the years have been essential and we think it's important that not only are the previous efforts acknowledged, but that there is an incentive for others to contribute in the future.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the Recognized Member title and on incentives and rewards for contribution. What do you think would be the best way to thank people for their help and encourage them to offer it in the future? You don't have to be an RM to offer your views - indeed, given how old the rank is it would be interesting to hear if people who don't hold it understand what is is even for or what the powers of an RM is.

Two ideas we are seriously considering at present are...
    - To be notably more liberal with giving out the Contributor title for those who contribute to the frontsite as a means to encourage people to help grow the site and community.
    - As a replacement to the RM title, create a 'Thank You' page detailing the names of people who have earned the RM title in the past, and continue updating this for consistent Contributors in future.

As always, please leave your thoughts in the Private Feedback Forum. We look forward to hearing from you.

    = = =

Finally, some have you may have already noticed but EoFF is delighted to confirm the return to staff ranks of Lone Wolf Leonhart as Social Media Manager!

He's already done some fantastic work securing an EOFF exclusive interview with Ray Chase, the voice actor for Noctis in FFXV. Stay tuned for that but in the meantime I'm sure you'll all join me in welcoming LWL back to the fold!

Spoilers: How and when to use them

There have been a few queries/complaints recently regarding spoilers so I decided to write up something to work as a general guideline.

    General Information
    - Spoiler: Any and all content that was NOT announced/shown off by the creating company to the public prior to release.
    - Announced information: Any and all content that WAS announced/shown off to the public by the creating company prior to release.
    - Creating company: The company and staff credited for the creation of the media. Not to be confused with rumours and/or leaked information.
    - Announced information can be in the title of a thread. Spoilers should NEVER be in the title of a thread.
    - Marked Spoiler: A spoiler found in the spoiler tags, eg: (SPOILER)like this
    - Unmarked Spoiler: A spoiler written in plain view without being initially 'hidden' by spoiler tags.
    - Thread Title Spoiler Warning: A warning in the title of a thread which states that the thread contains spoilers. When this is done, any spoiler relevant to the thread/forum title's stated media are considered "fair game" to be unmarked.

    Guidelines
Because of the different nature of various media, I've broken this down to make it a bit clearer.

    Film
    - If the film is not yet released, mark spoilers.
    - If the film is released and the film's name is in the title of the thread, spoilers should be assumed to be within the content of the thread.
    - If the film is released and the film's name is NOT in the title of the thread, mark spoilers.

    Book
    - If the book is not yet published, mark spoilers.
    - If the book is published and the book's name is in the title of the thread, spoilers should be assumed to be within the content of the thread.
    - If the book is published and the book's name is NOT in the title of the thread, mark spoilers.

    TV Series
    - If the episode has not yet aired, mark spoilers.
    - If the episode has aired and the TV series' name is in the title of the thread, spoilers should be assumed to be within the content of the thread.
    - If the episode has aired and the TV series' name is NOT in the title of the thread, mark spoilers.

    Video Games
We have to be more careful with this content as it is the primary content of the website and thus generates more particular threads rather than generic "Game of Thrones" or "Harry Potter" threads.
    - If the game has not yet been released, mark spoilers.
    - If the game has been released within the last year, mark spoilers.
    - If the game has been released for over a year and the game's name is in the title of the thread and/or forum, spoilers should be assumed to be within the content of the thread. However, for the sake of politeness towards people who are new to the game, it is still encouraged to mark notable spoilers where they are not the major topic at hand because dammit, it's just a nice thing to do.

    Using Spoiler Tags
    Typing something like this...
    PHP Code:
    [spoiler]This is a marked spoiler[/spoiler
    Results in this...
    (SPOILER)This is a marked spoiler

    Typing something like this...
    PHP Code:
[spoiler="Look, I changed the clickable bit to say something else"]This is also a marked spoiler[/spoiler
    Results in this...
Look, I changed the clickable bit to say something elseThis is also a marked spoiler

    Thread Title Spoiler Warnings

Spoilers can be marked in the title of a thread and that covers an entire thread. HOWEVER, we should be careful with that. Let's use the Game of Thrones example.

Thread Title: Game of Thrones (contains unmarked aired TV spoilers)

This is specific. It contains spoilers that will be unmarked. These spoilers will spoil the Game of Thrones TV episodes which have aired. It will NOT spoil book content, it will NOT spoil unaired content, it will NOT spoil content for whatever other TV shows.

    ____

Then you could go into an FFXV forum a month after release and see a thread such as this...

Thread Title: What did you think of the game? (SPOILERS!)

This is not specific, but it doesn't need to be. Clearly, the unmarked spoilers will relate to the entirety of the FFXV game.

    ____

    Let's find a bad example.

Thread Title: Your favourite film! SPOILERS!!!

This doesn't clarify which film the unmarked spoilers will be for. Not good enough - they'll have to specify the title of the film. Since this is about an unknown group of films, the spoilers will simply have to be marked in the thread.

    One last thing
There are some things which, while technically spoilers, are such common knowledge that they have become somewhat viral in their own right. Examples: Aeris dies, Mufasa dies, Bruce Willis is dead, the Titanic sinks, Vader is Luke's father, Firefly never gets a second season, etc. Deciding where that line is drawn is down to the moderation team - when in doubt, ask a moderator or simply mark your spoilers anyway just to be on the safe side.

The Lifesteam and You: Feedback sought (Addendum)

Two announcements in one week, you're all being spoiled rotten.

We set up the Lifestream a year ago as part of the Eyes on Each Other split. The feedback from you guys was that you wanted a safe space to talk about your lives and seek support and advice separate from the, ah, intense discussions which now live in Academia. Anyway, as part of that feedback members asked that it be kept safe from flaming, assholery, insulting people and what have you. There was a pretty great thread where many of you said you could do without that sort of thing.

With all that in mind, it's been something of a surprise that of late that this kind of thing is going on. Like, a lot. Even more interestingly it's not coming from the usual rogues gallery of trolls but some awesome and decent people. I'm not here to condemn or tell you all off or anything like that so please don't take this announcement as that - indeed, I'm damned proud of many of you for taking the time to offer such thoughtful advice. I'm sure as well that you all know the difference between being blunt in a constructive way such as telling someone they're being dismissive of helpful advice and outright mocking someone by having a good ol' giggle in General Chat or Facebook about it.

So, what's up? Do you still want the Lifestream? Do you feel comfortable posting about your own life there? Is this safe space needed? Should we just get rid of it? Do you have any positive experiences of how the forum has helped you that you want to share?

I appreciate a lot of people do enjoy talking freely and being snarky to people who annoy them, and prefer a laissez faire approach to moderation. It's not really what I'm looking to discuss with you all though - from my own experiences as a very long serving staff member, outside of the Lifestream we've never been so lenient. What I'm trying to get at is - have your views changed? Do you actually still want somewhere where we do take a really hardline approach?

The forums staff of EoFF would love to hear from as many members as possible. We'd be really grateful if you would take the time to share your thoughts with us. Please feel free to either make a Private Feedback Forum thread or drop me a PM, whichever you'd prefer.

    Thank you all!

Addendum: We've had lots of fantastic responses so thank you very much! One person expressed concern that the announcement was trying to shame people. I would like to say this is very much not the intention and if you have been left feeling bad by it I apologise - perhaps I should've been more explicit in my choice of words and that's my fault. If staff wanted to point fingers we'd definitely point one at ourselves - which is why we really wanted to gather this feedback! Perhaps to offer a summary: We, as a community, said how we wanted things to be and we as a community have been slowly (not just yesterday) going against that. Let's talk about that. Has our vision of a community changed?

I hope that has clarified matters and again a sincere apology to anybody my words have hurt.

We added some new rep titles

Because we have entirely too many Immortals running around. Immortals ain't nothin' now! For point of reference, you needed 1,000 rep points to hit Immortal and I've now added titles up to 5,000. View your profile if you want to see what your rep level is and you'll see it right under your name. Happy Moogle Hugging!

I just wanted to make a new announcement really. It's been too long.

100 x 100 avatars and Aerith clogging toilets

We had hoped to sneak this one by you all and see how long it took you to notice - not very long at all! The new maximum dimensions for avatars is now 100 x 100. You're welcome. Same rules as ever apply, don't have anything incessantly annoying for other users and we'll all be pals.

Next, a shameless plug. Go check out my Sims 3 Let's Play and indeed all of the other wonderful Let's Plays in our brand new Let's Play Forum. Only 27 of you have viewed it so far! We can do better than that!

Lastly it's my birthday tomorrow so please pretend to like me.

    Eyesonff Visits Square-Enix!

About a month ago, ShlupQuack and myself had the opportunity to go visit Square-Enix North America at their Los Angeles offices for a fansite Final Fantasy XIII-2 event. We had a blast. Everyone at SE was super nice and FFXIII-2 is a pretty fun game.

    A stylish Developer

Congratulations to Marshall Banana on becoming the newest member of EoFF staff! MB (or Monda) has already helped us on a fairly massive scale when it comes to vBulletin, particularly in the forum styles areas. She is responsible for such artwork as Kitty Fantasy and Christmas in Narshe. She'll be working alongside the other devs on the styles and on the new CMS (aka frontsite) system we have been chipping away at recently. Fingers crossed, we'll have more on that sooner now that she's on board.

    Ban Appeals

Some of you may know that banned members can appeal to be unbanned after two years. Those of you who don't know that, well you know now. Well, kinda, because we've changed the rule.

The time for a ban appeal has now been shortened to one year. This applies to all outstanding bans as well. Obviously, banned members probably aren't reading this, so if you know a banned person who wants to come back just relay the message.

Bear in mind that ban appeals are not guaranteed. If a member did something particularly asinine or keeps making second accounts because they can't find something else to do for a year, they probably won't get unbanned. So remember that next time you feel like taking a 'one year break' from the forums.

Come join us on Lindblum! (Final Fantasy XIV)

FFXIV's open beta has been going for a couple weeks now, and EoFF has decided Lindblum will it's official server for the open beta test (and, most likely, beyond). Come join us there (and be sure to harrass Loony Bob plenty)!

    http://forums.eyesonff.com/final-fan...open-beta.html

If you have already decided on a server for another reason and it's not Lindblum, no sweat. Still feel free to come discuss the game in our Final Fantasy XIV Forum. Most discussion won't be server-specific. And, if you feel like it, maybe you'll someday start a new character on Lindblum and come play with us!

If things change when the full game is released on September 22, we'll let you know. For now let's just enjoy Square-Enix's new MMORPG (when it's still free!).

So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Adieu

eestlinc has passed on to the farplane. Just kidding! Our dear ole friend has left staff and he's off to pursue his career in law in the big apple! Best of luck to you!

    Edit by Del Murder:

Don't forget about Zeromus_X, Shiny! Even though he spent most of his time in the gaming forums, he was a constant staff presence in that area and for that we are much appreciated.

As for eest, in his 5 years on staff he was one of the most innovative members and provided unique insight into staff issues. His ability to see a problem from many different points of view was unmatched. He will definitely be missed, and EoFF is definitely a better place when he is around. Don't forget about all us little folk when you go off to be a fancy big city lawyer, champ. *hails bruckner*

Most Likely to Become a Recognized Member

Please join us in congratulating our new Recognized Members:

Christmas - for her outstanding work in this winter's Ciddies as well as her overall involvement in facilitating events, excitement, and general activity at this board. This is certainly a more fun place when you are around!

Marshall Banana - she has been the most consistent presence in the Events Committee ever since its creation and is responsible for the ever popular Lucky Bags/Eggs/Pumpkins/etc event. She also did great work in helping create the Christmas in Narshe skin and always contributes a cute and fun attitude at the forums.

    Thanks ladies!

    Server Move Update

Another attempt to move the EoFF database to it's new faster server is scheduled for later tonight. Be prepared for some downtime.

Also don't forget to give a warm welcome to our new Cid's Knights, Shiny and Wolf Kanno.

    FFXIV Character

    Loony Bob (Sargatanas)

    They took our jobs!

We haven't even got a winner of the CK contest yet, but there are certainly changes amongst the staff already... I don't think that we can say a big enough thankyou to crono_logical and Samuraid, the leading staffers when it came to solving all of the problems you might have experienced at EoFF over the past five or six years. The fancy features, the forums-saving SQL queries, the optional Quick Reply... so many things have been fixed or implemented by these two since they joined that I don't think any techy admin will ever match their dedication to that end of things. Of course, things are different now and they both have other things to do with their time and we wish them all the best (and will surely come crying and begging for their help if we ever find ourselves in a proper pickle again!).

BUT! BUUUUUT! Things aren't all bad. rubah (aka Darth Allieson) and Psychotic have been made admin!

    Okay, so things are crap.

PS. See the announcement below, before it's too late!
    Bow before the mighty Javoo!

    rubah weapon

Our most powerful weapon has suddenly gotten more powerful. Not only can she wipe you out in a single move with her death claws, she can now wipe you out in a single move with her death claws while changing your name and profile details. Scary huh? Good luck getting your filthy hands on that Desert Rose now.

Either way, please welcome our freshest admin, it was about time.

Also, check out twitter stuff in announcement below.

    Twitter Profile Field Updated

The Twitter field in your profile has been updated. It is now an actual link to your Twitter page. You only need to enter your user name, so you no longer need to enter the http:// crap. So if you have something in that field you should update it so that the link works as intended.

    New Recognized Members

Eyes on Final Fantasy has a group called Recognized Members. These members were honored for dedicating their time and effort to EoFF in special ways. Once upon a time, these represented some of the most active and exemplary of those who posted at EoFF. We'd like to see that be the case once again. So without further ado, the following people have received Recognized Member status:

black orb - black orb has shown tremendous dedication to the art sections of Eyes on Final Fantasy for a number of years, and has created beautiful banners for our site.

BG-57 - BG has been one of the most active and helpful members in the Final Fantasy sections for a long time. Still talking about Final Fantasy games after all these years deserves some credit.

Goldenboko - Besides being one of the most active and dedicated posters on the forums, Goldenboko has volunteered to take on the 'dirty jobs' like cleaning up the Wiki and Mafia Archive (and for that reason his new nickname is Dirty Bird). He currently is also helping with the Events Committee.

JKTrix - JKTrix has provided us with heaps of gaming news and knowledge, most specifically in the General Gaming section. Since this is a gaming website we should recognize our gamers!

Ouch! - Ouch has been an active and contributing poster for over 6 years. He's spent that time hosting events like the screename competition and helping poor noobs in the FFXI forum. (see, I told you I would take care of you if you rigged me to win the last sn competition)

qwertyxsora - Our favorite green member has hosted numerous contests, and helped out with the Wiki and Mafia Archive. He's also a super nice and helpful guy, and a very active poster.

    last and definitely not least,

Rye - If you don't know why Rye deserves to be recognized, then you don't come to Eyes on Final Fantasy often enough. Among being one of the most active members in the last several years, Rye is currently dedicating her time by hosting the Eyes on You event as well as leading the EoFF Events Committee.

Even though their specific contributions are listed, it is not just that, but their overall attitude towards our website that allows them these honors. We thank you all, as well as all those who have been something special to Eyes on Final Fantasy in the past or present.

    User Avatar Size Updated

Your voices have been heard, and the size limits for user avatars has been increased from 60 by 60 pixels to 80 by 80 pixels. We encourage you all to make use of the extra size, but changing your avatar will not be mandatory.

This change will be implemented on a trial basis. If after a predetermined amount of time (approx 2 weeks) not enough users have utilized these new limits, or if the staff just doesn't like how it looks, then the size will revert back to what it previously was.

If you need help in resizing your avatar, feel free to contact Shlupquack, Marshall Banana, Momiji, or Tavrobel and they will be able to assist you. Or you can visit the following thread:

    A Russian Mountain Cat

Today (or, a couple days ago, forgive me for having a mourning period!) we bid farewell our beloved Yameneko. After spending 4 or 5 years on the staff of Eyes on Final Fantasy, he has decided that it was time he moved on. We wish him luck in his ongoing pursuits. Yams enjoys softball and fishing, and vacationing in his mountain home with his wife Carla, and his two daughters, Jenny and Christine. (I added that last part because when I worked at longs that was for some reason at the end of every email notifying us of some exec leaving)

I leave you all with this:

Can you name the member who's one cool cat,
Smells like a Russian, and perfect in Feedback?
    Yamaneko! Yamaneko!
Well, he quotes your reply with a one character post
He's the quick-witted member enforcers like most
    Yamanekooooo-oo-o! Yaman-ee-kooo! (...Yamaneko)
    Twelve Simpsons seasons, all memorized,
Three thousand posts of Los Angeles pride!
    Yamaneko! Yamaneko!
Top of the ranks in the Brigade of Spams,
Unexplained questions get a Yes for Yams!
    Yamanekooo! Yaman-e-koo!
He slays everybody with his wit so keen
    He's a Link-wearin', hurricanin', jokin' machine!
    Yamanekoooooo-oo-o! Yamaneeeeko!
    Yah! Yah, Yamaneko!
    Whoa Yamaneko!

    Buyer Beware (Premium Membership)

As you may know, we have been experiencing technical difficulties with Premium Membership. There is a limit as to what the Eyes on Final Fantasy moderation staff can do to to fix these problems. We have done our best to notify the site owners of the issues, and hopefully they will resolve them soon.

We apologize to all those who have purchased a membership and cannot enjoy all of the features advertised. We recommend that those considering purchasing premium membership keep this issues in mind when making their decision.

    Attention, people in couples

Body-snatching is creepy. Stop posting using each other's accounts.

And yes, Jojo, Krissy, and edczxcvbnm count as one couple.
