Well, Kadaj in AC just puts them into his arm, so it doesn't seem like one would actually need equipment.

The remnants are ghost-like creatures. There body is nothing but geostigma and that's why they can do this - not to mention it should look cool in Advent Children. Other people need to equip materia to use magic, except Sephiroth as a villain because he already has absorbed the knowledge to use the magic.

So? You have a billion gil, Its not that hard to pick up some gloves with materia slots like Tifa if you dont like walking around with a giant sword or a gun attatched to your arm.
