Well, not in America yet, but elsewhere. So, has anyone bought it? Played it? What do you think?

I discovered I'd won a £20 Amazon voucher today so purchased DNF this morning and hopefully will get lucky and have my free 2-3 day delivery turn up tomorrow like it often does. But yeah, this is a game that I've looked at in magazines and on the 'net for 14 years... even if it's crap, I'll probably still enjoy it on the basis of playing a piece of gaming history. :p

Nothing from 1997. EoFF didn't exist then.

I thought about buying it on Steam, but I decided I want the box. The freaking awesome box of the most meme'd game of all. Next week. Yeah.

It's kind of disappointing to know that a large amount of the gaming population are too young to understand the brevity of what is happening.

You know what? Fuck you, you don't know how much I want it. :colbert:

I've heard that it's a pretty mediocre game that could have, ironically, used some more development time for some polish, and all the gameplay videos I've seen seem to confirm the same.

Disappointing, but oh well. Maybe one of you will have a positive experience and reaffirm my belief in humanity.

yeah from what I've heard it's nothing special and the way it looks it should have come out in like 2007 xD

Yeah, I'm not expecting anything special, just Duke Nukem 3D in high definition, but that's fine by me. :)

Oh but BoB Duke Nukem 3D in HD IS special.

I hope the freeze gun is in this game, I love the freeze gun. FREEZE FREEZE FREEZE.

Ouch!

Perhaps as expected, all the game play I've been seeing makes the game look like clunky trash. Not a big surprise for a game that was in thirteen years of development hell, but disappointing nonetheless. I've heard that it's at least humorously self-referential in the way that you'd expect a Duke game to be, but the game play, level design, and everything else leave a lot to be desired.

First impression: Wait, it has to spend ten minutes installing (I got the PS3 version)? Wow, this really does bring back memories. xD

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall (13 years ago)

All the king's horses

And all the king's men

Couldn't put humpty together again (present day)

Okay, the gameplay so far I like. I have no real problem with that. There are two issues I have. One, the difficulty - well, this wasn't an issue until this irksome mothership battle I'm on now, where I've died a dozen times already. I know what I have to do, I'm just not skilled enough at present. This is where the second issue kills me. Waiting 20-30 seconds after each death for it to reload to the last checkpoint. What the hell. :( This is a real problem. I can't change the difficulty for this one battle, either. This is the end of 'chapter three' as it seems to be referred to on YouTube. I managed to not get hit at all one time but couldn't hit the mothership enough before it targeted and obliterated me. Gah.

EDIT: In all honesty, I may have to play this game on easy at this rate >_<

EDIT: Went away for a bit, came back, thought "I'll give it one more go and then it's Burnout: Paradise time" and... did it. Go figure. :D

Slow loading times has always been a problem with PS3, just the other day my brother was commenting on the fact that he prefers to play Fifa 10 on the 360 as its loading times were far far quicker... that is the brother who was a devoted PS3 fanboi.

The 360 version is reportedly 45 seconds, so it's not the console (although a PC with a solid state drive takes little time at all, but then that is a SSD for you). Some games will load fast and some games load slow, I imagine it's a coding thing for the most part. But DNF is definitely of the slower variety. Luckily the subsequent gameplay I experienced so far hasn't been so bad for difficulty which means I've not suffered so much. But yeah, definitely something that 3D Realms or whatever should be looking into repairing via a patch.

I'm going to play it and weep the whole time as it will invariably be rubbish. They should have just kept delaying it forever :(

I wouldn't say it's rubbish, so far. It's not groundbreaking, but it's not rubbish at all. Difficulty aside, the game is good fun... pretty much what I expected. Duke Nukem 3D, Part II (HD). If you liked Duke Nukem 3D then you should enjoy this well enough.

I don't remember that far back BoB. Besides, I'm just expecting the worst so it will blow me away and my childhood will be rekindled.

A difficult game? In 2011?

And now we know why everyone is saying it's trash.

To be fair, it wouldn't be seen as difficult if it wasn't for the patience-testing "death wait" at the loading screen after numerous deaths. I haven't come across anything difficult since that particular mothership battle, but then, I'm not hugely far into the game. Since then, though, I've died a few times but only out of laziness on my own part. The main thing critics are spluttering at are the graphics, which aren't top range but certainly aren't anything I consider to be horrible.

Yeah, I don't doubt there's a whole slew of problems with the game. I was just being cynical.

I doubt it's as bad as everyone saying, but I never expected it to be anything ground breaking or GOTY material.

Duke Nukem Forever shouldn't have been released until it was a decent product. Gearbox have done no one any favours by releasing this game as it is. The Duke Nukem franchise is likely dead now.

No it should've been released years ago when the Unreal Engine was new. Or very shortly after they wasted thousands on the HL2 engine.

The Duke Nukem franchise is likely dead now.

Did you just see the last E3? All we get are sequels, remakes, and reboots now.

If Angel of Darkness couldn't kill the Tomb Raider franchise, I seriously doubt this can kill the Duke Nukem franchise, even if it failed to turn a substancial profit.

Loony BoB

Depends on what you call a profit, I suppose. How much did the current dev actually invest? I don't think they'll be paying for all however-many years worth of development.

Played a bit more last night and continue to feel that it's a case of a very fun game that can be ruined by a very inconsistent difficulty level. You can stroll through periods of the game and then come into an enemy or two that will kill you ten times over while you try to pick them off.

Also, I hate those pigs that run at you like dogs. Proper annoying bastards, but then the game would be significantly easier without them, possibly too easy. It's definitely a different experience, though, than the usual shooter which involves constantly hiding in cover and then shooting people a significant distance away from you. This is much more an old-school, you're all in the same room, run and shoot ordeal. I'm definitely not used to it after all these years! Slowly getting back into the old habits though, and a recent boss (or miniboss) battle was taken care of effectively by running and jumping during one attack and quick sidesteps for another attack, and shooting at all times.

EDIT/BUMP: Okay, I finished inFamous and now I want to play this game but I only want to enjoy the quirks, not the actual fighting. So, for the first time in ages, I'm playing on an Easy difficulty. Already, I'm enjoying it more. I haven't done anything - literally. I just was searching for this thread while it sat there at the urinal (the opening scene) and a guy outside the room and Duke put in some amusing dialogue while I wasn't touching the controller. See, if this game had no shooting whatsoever, I'd probably actually like it a lot more than I do at the moment. Oh well, here goes, hello easy mode! Please be easy! xD

It seems ok a game to me, nothing special but they developed it in a year (I know it's been 50 years in the making or what have you, but the current devs from what I understood just ripped it all down and threw whatever they released in a year-ish?) so I wasn't expecting the world to set on fire, plus I got it for £20 on pre-release >.>;;;

Hate the fact you have to tap spacebar all the time though, it MAKES NO SENSE AND IS SO OUT THE WAY RRAAAWWWRRRR~
