Cool, that riddle wasn't that bad actually, I prefer ones that take thought over game knowledge. I'm gonna pass my turn to whoever turns up next if thats okay, I'm too tired to think of one right now.

Okay, so I can go?
Oh, and the answer to Idaho's riddle is Johnny.
Hmm, let me think.... hmmmmm. I'll post it later as soon as I think of one. If no one posts anything by the time I get back, it will be in this post in an EDIT. I don't want to doublepost, like Idaho just did. If someone posts something before I think of a riddle, I'll just post it next.
EDIT: okay here we go:
"My name is rather humorous.
You may think of writing,
But really no one is seen writing in me.
However, something disturbing regarding
The one between Pisces and Taurus
Is written above me."
Okay, you are finding the name of the speaker. If you find the name of the character mentioned, it will help you.
One winged angel of death
01-04-2005, 08:10 PM
is it cait sith? *i'm dumbfounded*
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-04-2005, 08:35 PM
You're on the right track, owad. Writing is the main hint here. Think outside the game for that. There's a name that is the same of something else not in the game that has to do with writing. I help you if you can figure out the hint in the last 3 lines. It's an event. You could probably use the hint and use the directions instead of the 'writing' clue to solve the riddle.
Okay, the 'writing' hint is a little obscure. Let's just say that when Squaresoft came up with that name, they might have had copyright issues, or the company named the same as what you're looking for might have been sued. I don't know if it happened, though.
TheSpoonyBard
01-04-2005, 08:53 PM
Between Pisces and Taurus lies Aeris, but I don't see the link with the writing. So, my first guess is Aeris.

Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-05-2005, 02:13 AM
Okay, Darkness has the hint. You probably don't need the 'writing' hint. Okay, what is below the place where something disturbing is written about Aeris? And don't really think 'written' with a pen. It's just produced in some way, and Cloud reads it. Now listen to how the speaker is applying the hint to himself.
You can use the hint (which is pretty easy now), or you can start looking at writing programs on your computer until you think "Hey, that's the answer!" I hope somebody has the program; I think it's second most popular.

Wrtiting programs? Is the answer Microsoft Word or something?
I'm really confused...
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-05-2005, 02:55 AM
No, "Microsoft" isn't in FFVII, but another one is.
Since someone figured out the hint, let me rephrase the riddle.
"My name is rather ironic.
You may think of writing on your computer,
But really no one is seen writing in me.
However, something disturbing regarding
Aeris
Is written above me.
Who am I?"
battousai9439
01-05-2005, 04:05 AM
Man, I looked up about 20 of the most popular Word Processors out there, and none of them triggered anything in my head...
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-05-2005, 06:08 AM
It's the name of a company who made the writing program.
Okay, the writing program is Word Perfect! Everybody should be going "ooohhhh"
This turned out to be harder than I thought. Word Perfect is not the answer, but the company who made it is the answer, and that's what's in FFVII which is below where Cloud reads the disturbing thing.
Okay, that's as many hints as I can give. It's really easy now.
battousai9439
01-05-2005, 06:17 AM
What... Corel?
OH!!! Corel Wordperfect *slaps forehead*
When I pulled up the info for those WPs, I went "oh, so it's Corel who makes Wordperfect." Completely ignoring North Corel...
I don't know what the disturbing thing is, but oh well...
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-05-2005, 06:36 AM
Yay, battousai got it!
I would have accepted any place with Corel. N. Corel, Corel, Corel mts, Corel Prison, as long as you said Corel.
I was trying to refer to--in the hint--the last fortune Cait Sith gives you right before he joins your party. Something like, "You will find what you seek, but you will lose something dear." Hmm, kinda like Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories. Like we wouldn't see that! But anyways, he gives you the fortune at Gold Saucer, which is above Corel.
k, battousai. riddle away.

"I am a playable character that has appeared in the most Squaresoft games."
Just in case I made a mistake, here's some hints to make sure we're on the same page.
"I cameoed with someone else in this game that takes place in the same place as FFXII."
"I cameoed with someone else in this game that has a German title."
"I cameoed with four other people in this beautiful game whose main character means 'sky' in Japanese."
battousai9439
01-08-2005, 05:57 AM
Aerith?
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-08-2005, 08:15 AM
Nope, sorry. Close, though.
(Okay, if battousai doesn't want to post another riddle, don't make Aeris the answer b/c he'll guess it first:) )
But, if you can name me four games other than FFVII that Aeris has cameoed in, you win.
Oh, and you can't guess. There's only 9 playable characters to choose from. So, that means you don't have to worry about summoned beings or anything Let's make it a multiple choice, but there's a catch.
1) Cloud
2) Barret
3) Tifa
4) Aeris (eliminated)
5) RedXIII
6) Yuffie
7) Cait Sith
8) Vincent
9) Cid
The catch is you need to tell me what games the hints are refering to. If you give me the wrong character, you must name at least 4 games she's been in, excluding FFVII itself.

If not Cid, is it Yuffie?

This is in the form of a plotless and somewhat nonsensical story, but the way it is written will hopefully reveal what it is I am asking for.
A rejuvinating breeze blows across the face
Of a company director who once fancied himself
As a bit of a gambler. Yahtzee was his favourite.
Winning caused him leap into the air with much vigour,
"Not for the cowardly" some may say.
A husky sits beside him, baring his teeth and snarling
As the beat of his heart quickens.
Suddenly, the beast becomes crazed and attacks
The director's vintage car, tearing a wide zig-zag, like a lightning bolt, down both side panels.
It's very confusing and abract, and it's not written as well as it could be, but I'll leave it for some people to take a stab at it.

Weimar Pluto Knight VII

Why are you guessing Rufus, SE? You'll lose if you're right. You both have a point; looking at the part where it talks about the dog makes me think of Rufus. But she (or it's a guy who is in love with Lulu) said 'director.' Most of the details seem random, except for the jumping part. Palmer!

Hehe, good times, it's nice to see things haven't changed much in over one and a half thousand posts :D.
A rejuvinating breeze blows across the face (Healing Wind)
Of a company director who once fancied himself (Big Shot)
As a bit of a gambler. Yahtzee was his favourite. (Dice)
Winning caused him leap into the air with much vigour, (Jump)
"Not for the cowardly" some may say. (Braver)
A husky sits beside him, baring his teeth and snarling (Galian Beast)
As the beat of his heart quickens. (Beat Rush)
Suddenly, the beast becomes crazed and attacks (Lunatic High)
The director's vintage car, tearing a wide zig-zag, like a lightning bolt, down both side panels. (Greased Lightning)
I haven't played in a long time, and I don't want to look at the site for names as it's a bit cheap when it's this close. But it's level one limits. Nicely written.

Very very close, so I'll give it to you. You've got the right idea, but a couple of the names were wrong.
"A husky sits beside him, baring his teeth and snarling" was meant to refer to Sled Fang. Huskies traditionally pull sleds over snow, so I was playing on that idea.
"Suddenly, the beast becomes crazed and attacks" This was Galian Beast, but as you named pretty much everything correctly (Jump is Boost Jump), I say well done!

The sun stood alone, and did it's work. (Sephiroth's Meteor)
It looked down at the world, the grass was calling for the aid of the gods. (The Planet was calling out for Holy to protect itself)
The sea was cold, yet hot at once, it healed the earth. (Lifestream erupting)
Surprisingly, the plums rose up and led the way, they told the others what to do. (No idea)
What did the blood do? (I'm assuming the 'blood' is the Lifestream, and if this is the case then the 'blood' helped to protect the Planet from Meteor)
PhoenixAsh
01-16-2005, 10:02 PM
Hmm, okay that was better, but still way off. I can't really give clues to this without giving too much away, I'll say that almost nothing in the riddle is meant literally. Well then again, some is, but not in this context. I'll be more helpful next hint.

I wonder where all the other posters are. Okay here's a clue, each line contains two important details, they are pretty much completely useless on there own though. Plums is the big clue to what this is about, just because there isn't a lot else they could be for
(though bear in mind there is a catch to this riddle).

Ansem: Plums are a fruit... the guys in the gym in Wall Market are fruits...
Kounetsu: Calling for the aid of the gods couldn't be anything but Holy.
Ansem: Unless 'the gods' refers to their kingdom, 'the heavens', which are in the Clouds. Or it could be referring to the choirs of angels 'Great Gospel'.
Kounetsu: I think this may be one of PA's 'solve each line' riddles which contain an answer on every single line, which may not have anything to do with each other.
Ansem: C'mon guys, let's all brainstorm to figure this one out!

01-18-2005, 03:45 AM
um, it stopped the sun from doing its work?
Oh, does it have to do with a bolte plume?
PhoenixAsh
01-18-2005, 12:07 PM
I'm intrigued by the bolt plume guess (not that it's close), just it may have some correct logic to it... then again it may not. The last two posts I did were fairly big clues so I'm not gonna give anymore, theres still a leap or two to be made, but think about what I've said so far.
EDIT: Actually thinking about it, this could be seen as one of my separate line riddles... hehe the structure is a bit different though.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
01-18-2005, 02:38 PM
Does it have something to do with the part with Shinra and the Diamond Weapon? Reeve told everyone else what to do. The blood went to the sun, I guess, which is the Sister Ray. Then I guess it fails to kick some Diamond butt, but destroys the barrier.
BudSoda02
01-18-2005, 03:17 PM
Remember Diamond weapon shot off just before he/she/it was shot by Sister Ray & yes it went through Diamond or else it wouldn't of destroyed the barrier... (Talk about two birds with one stone.) I personally don't think that the ray would've went through Diamond without Avalanche there to kick it's butt. Didn't Tifa say something about Diamond, as it can sense murder? I guess she was talking about Shinra... I don't know the answer to the question... Isn't bolt plume done by that monster Sephiroth left as a present for you in the Nibel Mountains?
Thanks- BudSoda02 BudSoda02@yahoo.com

(Bolt Plume is just an item you can get that I think some monsters drop. It lets you cast bolt2. Sephiroth throws the Destruct materia at you. I only use it for the final battle b/c the final boss uses wall on himself, and deBarrier is the default ability with no AP.)

It's got to be Hades, I think the fourth longest summon in the game behind Knights of Round, Bahamut ZERO & Neo Bahamut. 2nd stab, Knights of Round because there's a new beginning for you & a new end for your enemy.

You're not using the right strategy here. If I told you the strategy, it'd be easy.
Okay, I'll help you a little. The person speaking in this riddle is not the answer. He's actually not what we care about. Sorry, I should have told you that before, since most of my riddles' answers were the person narrating, but the person narrating in this riddle is irrevelant. It's a first person love poem, but try to read between the lines. It looks like someone writing a love poem, but if you are reading it like that, you are reading the mask of the riddle.

Dyne is not the narrator. No one is the narrator. You are reading the mask of the riddle.
I have an idea. I'm going to PM random people hints instead of posting them on here. That oughta make things interesting!
EDIT: I've PMed different hints to Angelus and redxiiii. It's just a matter of whoever is able to use it correctly first. Or, Pheonix Ash will be able to figure it out w/o a hint first. If you post a guess after this post, and I haven't PMed a riddle to you, I'll consider doing that.

Aeris is incorrect.
abrojtm, look for a hint in your inbox in a bit.
EDIT: Okay, 3 people got a different hint now. The only thing I don't like about this is abr is online, so he has a bit of an advantage.
EDIT: I guess he's not on anymore. Well, when someone solves the riddle, you'll understand why I'm doing hints in this fashion. I think we should incorporate PMed hints from now on, so people can't ride on hints.

Okay I'm gonna have to jump in I guess. The answer I'll guess from abrojtm is Ultimates, though I can't fit that. I'm sure it's something that is united by the characters, (at least some). I've leant towards characters important to them (Zack, Seto, Marlene etc.) but I can't get that either. This is tricky...

The other girl was Jesse. She's supposed to like Cloud, right? Unfortunately, she dies like 50 hours of gameplay before Aeris died, so that romance had no chance to develop.

It must be something else because Red XIII's Lv.4 limit is useless (Stardust Ray is his best), and Tifa's doesn't work the same way as everyone elses. Could it be a reason for killing Sephiroth? While we're waiting for Final-Andy to say "You're right, PA!" I'd like to suggest two new rules for this thread.
1) Hints may only be sent via PM to people who have guessed. PMing is also the only way to know how close you are, too.
2) We had to wait a while for GG last time, so to avoid that, I suggest a 24 hour grace period for the solver to post the new riddle. After that, anyone can post a riddle. That way, the thread doesn't risk going under.
Rule 1 is lame; Rule 2 is generally implemented.
PhoenixAsh
02-01-2005, 01:27 AM
Rule 1 isn't that bad. I don't think it should be a rule as such, more an option. Some hints should definitely be general on obscure riddles though.
Anyway that's up for discussion. If I'm right, then I pass on my go, and I'll leave my last riddle up for solving, and maybe start posting new ones in a while. That said I may easily be wrong.

Try again. You can do it!

02-17-2005, 09:56 AM
Is it vincent?
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-17-2005, 12:55 PM
Nope not Vincent. He's the 2nd to last character found, but how is part of the second found of something else? Also, my hint explained that my riddle is true if you've found everything in the field in the regular quest (so, no sidequests and hence Vincent is wrong under that logic, too) and haven't failed anything.
Since nobody is coming close, I might at well give everyone a hint. It's someTHING you FIND. So's the other THING. There something that you find that's the 2nd thing you've found non-randomly,then if you complete the game w/o missing anything in the main quests, you will find the other thing that's 2nd to last of something more specific, which is "part" of the first thing.
redxiiii
02-17-2005, 12:57 PM

Sorry about the confusing hint.
Hmm, since it seems it's just us on, I'll just post a hint on here.
Be a little more specific. Oh, and the answer is the 2nd thing in the riddle. There's the first thing that will help you with the 2nd part of the riddle, and that's who's talking, and that is the answer.

02-17-2005, 01:18 PM
No, what are you doing? You're getting cold again.
When you said "materia," I said, "Be more specific." Notice I used that hint after that particular guess.
Okay, here are the hints. There's something that you find if you are thorough in your searches in the main quests that's the 2nd thing to be found. Now, fast forward much later when you find the 2nd to last thing of something else, which is also a part of the other thing. This second thing is the answer. Also, when you said the answer was materia, I told you to be more specific. Hmm, maybe that hint about specificity wasn't so random, considering your guess.
Good luck, red. I know you can do it.

02-17-2005, 02:31 PM
I'd say Bahamut Zero? That's the second to last Huge Materia, I think. I haven't played the game in ages.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-17-2005, 02:48 PM
I hope it's not Bahamut Zero. Otherwise, I messed up. Okay, guys! Now get even more specific than that! You're close. It's obvious how to be more specific, so I'll just say that I hope there isn't any summon materia in the North Crater or Midgar, b/c if there is, I messed up.
EDIT: Uh oh. Is there one in the Underwater Reactor? I don't think so, but if there is, uh, pretend it didn't exist!
Don't forget about the first part of the riddle. That's another route you can take. The route you are on doesn't have much distance left on it, and if you figure out the first part of the riddle, the rest of the distance to the answer is pretty short. Being part of the 2nd found of something different implies that the answer is right in front of you if you figure out the first part of the riddle.
EDIT: whoops, I should probably add also that if you use the first part of the riddle, it's not the second thing literally, but the second type of the thing that's not a summon materia.
redxiiii
02-17-2005, 04:15 PM
Shield materia, mega all materia?
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-17-2005, 06:16 PM
I don't care about the shield or mega all materia.
Due to the several paths in the Northern Crater, there is no specific order where you pick up items. But, my riddle still holds, b/c it doesn't matter what order you picked up stuff in the Northern Crater. No matter what you do in the Northern Crater, the second to last of a specific kind of something you find will be part of the second totally different thing you collect, in context of the whole entire game (except for sidequests).
All you have to do is start a new game and play through the first reactor mission! After it blows up, you say, "Okay, I definitely did everything I can do in here. Hmm, let's go through 2nds."
If you get an answer that doesn't help you, if it's the same as "the first," that doesn't count, as I pointed out earlier.
gismo
02-17-2005, 07:22 PM
is it the dark mater?my logic on this is way wrong an half asleep so not readin ya hints well enuf but dark mater is the second to last materia to be used at the end, as Holy is the last, and as to the second found, in the ancients temple u find bahamut summon first, if i remember right (might b wrong as not played in years an my PS n players guide is in attic as room is empty at min)
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-17-2005, 09:05 PM
Is Dark Matter in FFVII? Maybe that's in the Japanese version.
Did I say "use?" I thought I said "found."
Okay, let's organise our hints here.
Path 1: You use the first part of the riddle to get the second part, which is the answer. I remember I said all you need to do is replay the first reactor bombing, doing and getting everything, then search through "seconds." The second type of something is during this event. If you know what it is, it will be sooooo obvious what the answer is.
Path 2: Solve the hint directly by ignoring the first part of the riddle, and follow the hints provided here. We've narrowed it down to a materia. Definitely, the answer is the second to last specific materia you find, assuming you do everything except for sidequests. The North Crater has several paths, making doing stuff in there random, but that does not affect this riddle. No matter what order you get everything in the crater, you will follow my riddle. As I stated before, if you fail some things in the whole game, the riddle may not work out. You must succeed exactly four times, where it is possible to fail.
EDIT: I should probably rewrite the riddle b/c I realise some of this is vital to solving the riddle.
"I am part of the second thing found,
And I am the second to last of something different found.
For this be true, one must succeed four times
When one may fail.
Be narrow-minded but thorough,
And you will realise what I am."

Steal or cure materia?
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-17-2005, 10:50 PM
Let me clarify something. Specific type of materia, I mean. Not specific materia.
What worried me above? Okay, let's start eliminating. The Norther Crater did not worry me at all. I didn't remember what you collected, but I knew that it did not affect my riddle. In fact, you can eliminate everything in The Northern Crater b/c of that, so don't guess anything else from the North Crater.
Area #47 - The Crater (revisited) / Final Encounter
[. . .]
-> [Materia] [. . .] HP Absorb Materia [. . .] Shield Materia [. . .] W-Magic Materia, Counter Materia [. . .] Magic Counter [. . .] Mega-All Materia,
Hmm, that comma at the end worries me. I hope it's complete. I also notice 3 blue materia.
Let me teach you proof by contradiction. I do it in my math classes sometimes.
Assume solution is blue materia.
Second to last blue materia you collect is unaffected by whatever you do in the North Crater.
But, there are three blue materia in the North Crater.

Weimar Pluto Knight VII

Come on, Red. You can do it.
(Yeah, I'd be tired too if I stayed up until six. You in Eastern Time Zone? I am pretty tired, too, for studying until 3 AM last night.)
Okay, back to the riddle. I think Holy and Black Materia were already guesses, and I said they were wrong. Well, for some reason the person called the Black Materia "Dark Matter," but Black Materia when you call it what it is is still wrong.
Just work backwards through the game. If there's only one yellow materia at the crater, maybe the answer is a yellow materia. (Not "yellow or command materia," but one of them.) Just go back through the game until you get the 2nd to last one. Proof by contradiction helps. So if you follow a kind of materia backwards, you have to make sure it passes the first part of the riddle. Like "Okay, maybe it's W-item. It should pass the first part of the riddle." If it doesn't, you draw crashing arrows on your paper and follow another type of materia backwards. If you can figure out how it passes the first part of the riddle, then you win.
I don't know how another materia could pass my riddle, but if it one exists, and you say why, you win, and I'll tell you what one I intended.
But, the one I intend passes the first part of the riddle quite obviously. So, for those of you trying to start with the first part of the riddle-- like I sort of said earlier, just play through the first reactor bombing again collecting everything, and the answer will be right in front of you at some point. Remember, the second something is not something that the answer is, but the answer is "part" of the thing in the reactor.
Good luck, y'all!

PhoenixAsh
02-18-2005, 04:15 PM
I'll go with Ultima. I can't actually remember whether you get it in the reactor or not, but I'm pretty sure you get Restore there, or near there. This would be the second materia you find, it happens to be magic. Shield would be the final magic materia, and that leaves it as either Full-Cure or Ultima. As Ultima is the one that can be failed in several different ways I guess that.
I know some of that logic doesn't necessarily fit the riddle, and Ultima doesn't seem as obvious as it might, but I just read every hint from the original clue in one go and now I'm too tired to think.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-18-2005, 08:31 PM
Red, I just proved to you that no blue materia is the answer, and nothing in the crater is the answer. Why would you pick that?
Pheonix Ash, I am impressed with your critical thinking, but Ultima wasn't what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I cannot reward you with a statement that you solved the riddle.
This is basically what I want you to do. If the answer is S, you have to say, "S is the second to last T materia you get, and S is part of the second totally different type of thing you collect in the game, which is X, and X is a(n) x. The ambiguous phrase "part of" refers to how E." "S"="the answer," "T"="type of materia", "X"="the second thing you collect blah blah blah," "x"="what that thing is, like materia, armor, weapon, etc.", and "E"="explanation of what 'part of' means."
So, Pheonix Ash thinks the answer is Ultima. So, he needs to fill in the logic variables with support as to why Ultima is the answer. So, "Ultima is the second to last magic materia you get, and Ultima is part of the second totally different type of thing you collect in the game, which is ______, and ______ is a(n) ______. The ambiguous phrase "part of" refers to how ______________." If he can't fill in the blanks, then he needs to come up with a different materia.
Succeeding four times does not mean you will not collect the answer, but it will make the riddle untrue. You don't have to explain this, but you may, since if you have the answer I'm looking for, you'll know what these are.
Some errors in PA's logic is that Restore is the first materia you collect, not counting ones pre-equipped onto the Buster Sword. I also, I would call Full-Cure something you get in a sidequest, since there's not much of an obligation to get it at a certain time. I am defining sidequest as anything you do where the story wants you some place else. If the story isn't at Cosmo Canyon where an item becomes available then, don't worry about it since it contributes to variable order.
If proving it seems hard, if you have the answer I'm looking for, it shouldn't be too hard to fill in all the blanks, as long as you have a pretty good memory of the game, so you have to know order of important stuff to collect, which probably isn't too hard. The stuff in the first reactor you probably have memorised since you've done that a lot more times than the rest of the game.
PhoenixAsh
02-18-2005, 09:04 PM
Okay well in that case I think the answer must be Phoenix. A Summon materia, and I'm guessing it's the second if you ignore Bahamut ZERO, Hades, and Knights of the Round... Actually scrap that, I think ZERO would be the final one, making the four huge materias the ways to fail. The second item you get would then be Phoenix Down, of which Phoenix is part of the name.

I'm gonna give it to the next person who wants to make a riddle again, but I'll leave my old one up for solving still:
The sun stood alone, and did it's work.

Hmm, maybe it has to do with Sephiroth in the flashback. He's alone, working/reading/, looks down on everyone, then you might be talking about the burning of Nibelheim, ...
The blood followed the plums. The plums had a reunion or something.
You might also be talking about Midgar. The blood gave life to the sea, while the plate was looking down.

I'm intentionally not giving massive clues to this, bear in mind it's only there as a background riddle while someone else writes the main one...
I really can't say a lot here, the most important thing to note is the structure of this riddle. It isn't as uniform as it could be, but it's pretty much key to solving it properly. That said you could in theory solve this without a lot of the information given.

Hmm...
What exactly do you mean by the "structure" of the riddle?
1st line-9 syllables
2nd line-17 syllables
3rd line-13 syllables
4th line-20 syllables
...Nope, no clue there...
Judging just from the clues, I'd guess that the sun is Meteor. Meteor was alone in the sky doing what it was meant to do-destroy everything.
The grass calling for the aid of the gods would be the land/people in despair at the situation, asking for hope but not knowing if any would come.
The sea healing the earth would be the Lifestream stopping Meteor, though I can't make sense of the cold/hot bit.
The plums then would be the heros or the Shinra. Cait Sith instructed people to take shelter in the slums, as did Rufus and company.
Which would leave the blood to be Sephiroth, and what it did was hold Holy back.
That's the most sense I can make of this. But if I'm wrong, I'll be happy to try again.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-19-2005, 05:43 PM
No, the blood is something the plums is telling what to do. Shinra doesn't tell Sephiroth to block Meteor. That can't be right. Also, the way the question is structured, you have to try to be able to come up with something metaphorical, like the rest of the riddle. Am I right, PA?
I'm trying to ignore the nouns in the riddle, and trying to see if the actions are familiar. I'm also thinking about what could be comprised of five elements. One thing I can think of is the Pagoda, but I can't think of a way to apply the riddle there.
Maybe you could tell us if we're getting closer to solving the riddle? Anybody come close?
PhoenixAsh
02-20-2005, 03:18 PM
Skyblade used impressive thinking, but sadly not right. Weimar, very good logic, and getting very close to answering this, however you seem to have assumed a link between the instructions of the plums and the blood which isn't there. I may have been misleading in a clue somewhere in that respect, so if I was I apologise.
As for the form of the answer, that should be fairly clear once you work out what it is. I don't have anything specific in mind.
EDIT: If you are going to use the entire riddle, I should make two warnings. One is that there is a twist that I put in to make it harder to solve. Two is that you have to assume something about the plums, which might be less obvious than for the other nouns.

Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-20-2005, 08:55 PM
How do I keep going? Try again with something different?
I wonder what the twist could be. I mean, the materia theory works.
Sun=yellow materia
Grass=green materia
Sea=blue materia
plums=purple materia
blood=summon materia
Do I have to come up with something else for the blood to do? All we have to do is figure out what every line's counterparts are in the game, then change what blood's counterpart does to a metaphor that fits the rest of the riddle, right?
Let me go back to Midgar then.
The Shinra Bldg. is the sun, due to its location in Midgar and due to it working.
The people in the slums of Midgar call for the aid of the gods, or Shinra.
The sea is Avalanche. The sea comes from what an avalanche is. The coldness comes from it being snow and maybe b/c Cloud is a member; the hotness coming from Barret (short temper) or Jesse (she's hot, okay j/k). It heals the earth by blowing up reactors and stopping Sephiroth.
Plumszzzz....... hmmmm. The Turks are kinda bossy.
The blood is Mako. Possible answers due to this logic:
A) The blood gave life to the sea.
B) The blood came out of the planet, causing it to gradually die.
EDIT: Hal, I think you have to be more metaphorical.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII

Aaargh, so close, and now going in totally the wrong way. Weimar don't go back on what you've got, but actually try and get the whole riddle working. I said there was a catch and there is, work out what it is and you've finished.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-21-2005, 03:50 AM
The twist must be there are 5 kinds of materia, so each line is about a materia. That's the only kinda twist I can come up with, unless the plums are the little purple dudes in the Temple of the Ancients.
But it's weird how the actions seem to be messed up. Let me just look at action.
stood alone and did it's work--independent
aid of the gods--summon
healed the earth--support
told the others what to do--command
Okay, I get it. What does command mean? "tell others what to do." That's the twist! I've got it!
What's left, now? Hmm.
Magic! Now, I just need an expression. The blood
1) called on supernatural powers
2) pulled a rabbit out of its hat
3) disappeared
4) cast a spell
5) split the planet in half
6) said, "I will now cut Cloud in half!"
7) did something that means magic
Skyblade
02-21-2005, 06:04 AM
The sun (Yellow) is command Materia.
The grass (Green) is magic Materia.
The sea (Blue) is support Materia.
The plums (Purple) is independant Materia.
The blood (Red) is summon Materia.
Pretty easy, if you look at it that way.
So what the blood did was summon... Still, if that's wrong, I guess we'll have to think of something else...
The sun stood alone, and did it's work.
It looked down at the world, the grass was calling for the aid of the gods.
The sea was cold, yet hot at once, it healed the earth.
Surprisingly, the plums rose up and led the way, they told the others what to do.
Looking at the way suggested in the above post, I would say that:
The sun is independent (stood alone).
The grass is summon (calling on the aid of the gods).
The sea is magic (magic is where most of the healing is).
The plums are support (instructing/affecting the others-support materia).
So the blood is Command Materia, right?
PhoenixAsh

What did the blood do?
We have a winner!!!.....Kinda....
The nouns were in facts clues/ distractions as to the solution. They do represent colours of materia, but are not connected to the materia they represent. The idea is to realise you have all five colours, and so come up with the missing action.
stood alone, and did it's work. (Independent)
calling for the aid of the gods. (Summon)
cold, yet hot at once, it healed the earth (Ice, Fire, Cure, and Quake, this is Magic, admittedly slightly less clear than the others)
they told the others what to do. (Command)
And so the blood did whatever you think would represent Support materia :D.
Weimar pretty much got the full answer so the riddle (FINALLY!!!) goes to him, well done :D.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-21-2005, 01:49 PM
hmm, that explains the hot and cold bit. Everyone was stuck on that.
Yep, that was very well written, although I think the 3rd line didn't fit the rest of the riddle. The other three were phrases that meant what the materia was called, but you did something different for magic. I don't know if that was intentional to make it hard, or you couldn't think of something better. So, I was like, " 'healing the earth' sort of means support, so..."
I just did the last one, so I pass. College is getting a little stressful right now with studying and a research paper, so right now I only feel like solving riddles but not writing them.
Hal, do you want to go? I couldn't have done it w/o you bringing up independent materia.
PhoenixAsh
02-21-2005, 07:21 PM
Yeah I can't remember why I wrote the third line differently, I know I thought about it, because I knew it left out so many magics. I wanted to be not too obvious, that's why the nouns were there as a semi-clue and semi-distraction.
Yeah next riddle should go to Halenite, even though technically mine wasn't part of the main thread.
Skyblade
02-21-2005, 08:15 PM
I still disagree with the last bit. You riddle states that the plums "take the lead, telling the others what to do". The only Materia that affects other Materia is support, not command. Poorly worded, in my opinion.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-21-2005, 08:42 PM
Yeah, that got you, didn't it, skyblade. Only the 3rd one was poorly worded, b/c the rest of them had a common system. He took the definition of the types of materia, then had something with a different color do each definition. "Independent" means standing alone and doing its work. He didn't intend it to be what the materia does. The word "summon" itself means calling for something, like aid. "Telling the others what to do" means the word "command." That wasn't poorly written; you just got thrown off and wanted to think about the materia and not what their called.
PhoenixAsh
02-21-2005, 08:51 PM
*Nods*, yeah thanks Weimar, that pretty much sums it up. I really wish I could remember the thinking behind the third line, I'm sure there was some :P.

Telling the others what to do is what threw me. The only "others" we referred to were other materia. And the only materia that affects other materia is support materia.
Weimar Pluto Knight VII
02-21-2005, 09:43 PM
Yeah, that threw me off, too, until he said that there is no connection between the blood and the plums. So, even if he said "the" (I can imagine him laboring over that), don't apply a link to the other lines.
Also, I think Mega-All is an independent materia, yet it also affects other materia. There goes your logic.
Skyblade
02-21-2005, 09:51 PM
*Shrug* Mega-All differs from support materia in two ways, one of which is very important. The first is that it affects all your materia (which doesn't really matter for the purposes of this discussion). The second is that unlike support materia, Mega-All is useful by itself (it changes your attack to Slash-All). Support materia is only useful when combined with other materia. Oh, and I was not connecting plums to blood (everything else, perhaps, yes, but not the blood, since it wasn't in the riddle yet). I was simply pointing out that the line states that "Surprisingly, the plums rose up and led the way, they told the others what to do". Look at this. "Surprisingly" could refer to the fact that Support materia is useless by itself, so it is hardly the top choice for what "led the way". "Told the others what to do" is also pointing to Support materia. The others are the sun, grass, and sea. What is the only materia (besides a single independant one called Mega-All, if that will make you happy) that "tells the others (other materia) what to do"? Support. Command materia just supplies new battle commands. It doesn't really tell anything what to do.

Use of the word others wouldn't have anything to do with the other materia in the riddle if you took the riddle as it was. The nouns don't actually exist, they are merely clues as to the answer in the riddle. Even if they were meant to be taken as existing, they don't actually match the actions that they are said to, and therefore couldn't really be taken as materia.
