View Full Version : Final Fantasy 30?!

The series is still going strong with 11 current games, and countless other spin-offs, yet how long do you think it'll go on? Do you think the series only has a few more games left, or will we be spending our retirement money on Final Fantasy 72?

I hope the series continues until it reaches a point where Square and company feel that they can no longer turn out a product worthy of the name Final Fantasy. When that will be, it's anybody's guess..

Take care all.

I've yet to play past 9 myself but I think if they are going to keep it going they'll have to take it back old school. Saving the planet, mages, knights, etc. I like that feel to FF games. I suppose I'll play any FF game untill I play one and think it truly sux

Imagine one day owning over 50 Final Fantasies... that would be something, and being able to compare the differences between Final Fantasy 1 and 50, that would be a sight to see as well.

Take care all.

I think they'll quit making "Final Fantasy" before they reach 20. After that, they'll probably make something similar, just with another name :p

"Fantasy Final "...oh goodie...

Yes,owning about 50 of the final fantasy games, and trying to get your hands on still running copys of the old,not to mention the game systems to play them, would be quite an amusment. But, I assume that if they take it all the way to 50, you will see a lot of Final Fantasys re-made. By 2o or 30 I believe the playstation versions would be remade (seeing how it seems a new consoles comming out every 2 or three years).

really? o.o i heard from a few friends that FF 10 and 11 kick ass.

well.....*thinks for a sec* i believe they made FF V or VI (or was it III?) sometime like 1995 or so. And i believe FFVII was made only 2 years after that. Assuming that they'll make a new FF every two years, we'll be spending our retirement money on it, as the first person said. By then it will be....*calculates quickly* FF40 or something.

With all the advancements in technology and science, it is quite possible to believe we'll all live into our mid 80's or even early 90's, so I'd warrant we'll see plenty of Final Fantasy games from now until then.

Imagine having your grandchildren tell YOU to turn the video games off!

Take care all.

As long as we keep buying, they'll keep producing. Once the demand slows down and the supply increases to where they can't sell enough, they'll stop. So yes, I can see it lasting a while at least.

Perhaps I'm just too idealistic, but I'd hope that Square would stop when they truly felt they'd hit the peak and not allow the series to wallow in sub-par games there after. So, they'd stop while the demand is high, and not wait for sales to sag.

Take care all.

EDIT: Classic exchange DJzen!

Yeah, I agree with you The Captain. I don't want them to keep producing and end up coming up with very crappy games.

Well, this also begs the question - are we ever going to grow out of Final Fantasy? Surely, there are more important things in life than a video game? (Yes, there are, but don't call me Shirley)

The Captain

Do you speak jive?

I don't think I ever will. I hope I don't, because to me, that would signal that I've lost touch not only with a part of my childhood, but also that I was putting less sway on my imagination and love for fantasy.

I know for a fact I'll never grow out of RPGs...as for the Final Fantasy series though, the way it's heading, I'm starting to dislike it. But then again, I'm an "old-school gamer", so that may be why.

They are making FF12 Spuuky.

Wasn't it stated by Square somewhere that they were planning upto FF15 so far? I think it will stop a few or so after that and maybe they might create a new series with something new. I know they said somewhere that KH was going to be a new mainstream series.

Actually, Tetsuya Nomura stated he doesn't want to take the series that far, seeing as how it only revolves around Sora and the gang it can only go for so long but time will tell. But yeah, I too heard they are planning atleast up to 15

I'm 21 and I haven't grown out of games yet. They're a valid form of entertainment, you just gotta remember that they aren't everything in life. I'd have to say that my music and martial arts classes are far more important to me than any game.

Agreed. They are an excellent source of fun, but we must be wary that they don't become our ONLY lot in life. A balance is probably the best, but if they keep making games, sooner or later, I'll get around to playing them.

If you make a living in the game industry then games become pretty important. :D I'm 21... soon to be working in the game industry, and games ARE my life. Heh!

As for the topic, I dont think they'll ever stop making em... at least not until video games stop becoming popular.

I've already exhausted my lust for FF games. I don't imagine they will do much else unless they have a TOTALLY new engine or something more extravagent. The idea of another band of misfits saving the world for another thirty times doesn't really appeal to me.

I've actually been incorperating final fantasy with school and the like, breaking down why the games appeal to us, and why perhaps they will one day represent the current state of our culture. It's interesting to think that one day we'll be defined by the GAMES we played.

I'm hoping they don't get to the 'flogging a dead horse' stage. A nice, well-written, epic ending would bring it to a comfortable close, for me. Imagine it, the last scene of the last FF ever - the immortal Crystal Theme humming in the background, as the sun sets over a cliff by the sea, where weary heroes reflect on their struggles, losses and experiences... something like that, a scene that encapsulates everything the series has been about since its inception.

If they just drag it out for ever and ever, the games will become less unique and more 'photocopied', as the writers - talented as they are - simply run out of ideas. Refreshing the creative talent pool with new artists would add a bit of longevity, but it'd only delay the inevitable. If they end on a strong note and leave the gamers satisfied but wanting more, then they've won; if the series just grinds down to an anticlimactic fizzle, then they've lost. Just like TV sitcoms - Fawlty Towers only had about eight episodes, Friends had hundreds; but no-one's going to look back fondly on every episode of Friends that was ever made. With a series that's run too long, all the installments just blend into a vague and indistinguishable fog.

(No offence intended to Friends fans, that was just an attempt at illustrating my point.)

Not sure if/when my own FF interest will wane; the mature, deep stories such as VII's should remain pretty timeless, but if Square-Enix falls into the trap of trying to cater to a particular demographic, then they're doomed. FFIX was clearly aimed at capturing a child audience, with its rushed and cartoony designs; FFX-2 is a pretty blatantly "late teen" game. Now, I thoroughly enjoy both of those games, but if you compare them to FFVII, you might see what I mean - VII isn't trying to capture 'one audience', its themes and charcters are diverse and encompass a wide range of ideas and experiences. Good way to continue the series, I think.

The Captain
04-04-2004, 06:17 AM
Most definitely Big D!

Square got here by creating unique games meant to be enjoyed by everyone, it had an epic plot, lovable characters, side quests, sports in some cases, etc, etc, etc. If they DO continue on the path of catering to a specific demographic, how far away are we from, "Final Fantasy: High School", where the hero must ask the girl to the prom before the evil jock wins her heart and takes over the world?

I hope I NEVER see that day come to pass. Fawlty Towers, one of the greatest shows ever, by the by. Though Curb Your Enthusiam is gaining, in my opinion.

Take care all.

i didnt think ff9 was that childish! i mean it questions the very worth of life! yes it had some comedy scenes, but so did ff7.

When my FFX save showed up as 48:00, I just put down the contoller and went outside.
2 days on one game? FFS I can't be doing that. It was my second time through aswell...

I just used the calculator and worked out that I've spent 1% of my life playing FF. (0.6% of that on FF7).
Coupled with the fact that I've probably spent the same amount of time playing Civilization, that's 2% of my life wasted...

50 FFs though... imagine how much you could make selling your copy of FF6 on eBay by the time that's come out...

Kirobaito
04-05-2004, 04:28 AM
That's a good formula, Reina.
(I'm rounding these)
FFI: .5 hours
FFII: 16 hours
FFIII: First Game 29 hours, Second Game 24 hours, Third Game 31 hours
FFV: 18 hours
FFVII: First game 15 hours, Second Game: 98 hours, Third Game 6 hours
FFVIII: First game 43 hours, Second and a few other games: 6 hours, probably, total
FFIX: First game 51 hours, Second Game 23 hours
FFX: First game 80 hours, Second game 26 hours
Tactics: 2 hours

Let's see, that's...468.5 hours..19.5 days. I've lived for approximately 13328295 days, give or take a few dozen, probably. Oh. It's not really that close. .00000146 percent of my life.

I just HAVE to take objection to DocFrance's "Grow up" comments. Whoever decided that video game were exclusive to children. I'm sick of hearing those that pompous phrase! Yes, there are plenty of things which have to take priority over games (unfortunatly), such as food, drink, money, work, etc, but arn't some people here forgetting something. Gaming is a hobby. It's something people do for fun, to escape from what is often an infuriating reality. I wish people would, honestly, shut up with the "grow up" phrase! I hear it about my anime, and I've heard it to a lesser extent with games, and it's all nonsense.

Anyway, I'm getting off point. Knowing big buisiness, I expect Square to drag FF on as long as they're still able to make at least some money from it, although I sincerly hope they don't do this. I'd like them to end the series when they feel that they may soon run out of good ideas for the series, preferably if they go out with a bang. I'd like to remember FF for its greatness, not as the series that died a long painfull death. I like Big D's idea of a final FF which focuses on the themes and ideas prevelent throughout the series, it would be even better if the game could also have the ultimate crystal storyline. It could be also be a crossover game, where the heroes from every FF had to team up to save each of their universes from a villain threatening everything, enlisting in the help of all of the surviving villains from previous games.

Hi, Lets Analize a litlle Bit the final fantasy series , Itīs really different Games With a signature of quality on ti, Iīve always think that Crono Trigger would be easily a Final Fantasy, think about it, As Long Square produce RPG there are gonna be Final Fantasy, The Secrets is that the caracters are moving on , changing... Ironic, the first final fantasy was supossed to be the last.

Seryn Kai
08-04-2004, 10:19 AM
I sort of see FF as a seal of quality, although there are certain conventions that the game needs to count, such as Chocobo's, Moogles, someone called Cid, etc... OK, so Spirits Within only had the last one and Chocobo's and Moogles only came in after 3 from what I hear, but you get the idea. However, theres one thing that bothers me about the seal of quality idea. First, it really is down to personal opinion, and secondly, many people, myself included, think that the standard is slipping. I believe it started with 8. That game wasn't bad, I enjoyed it, the story was good, I just felt it wasn't as good as other RPG's I'd played, and looking back now after I've played earlier FF's past 7, I'm even more convinced. FF9 was good, it was just too easy, like 8, But the story sort of made up for it. 10. It was OK, the story was OK, it got better towards the end, but again, it was way to easy, and that's before you get me started on THAT camera.... X-2. Same here, the story was OK, better overall that 10, got better later on, much better, but the camera was still a nuisance, slightly less so this time, but the game was easier than anything I'd EVER played. My point, as time goings on, in my view at the very least, quality is slipping. The games are getting more and more easy, and plots with only pick up later on are becoming increasingly common. I hope Square end the series on a good note, when they're still going strong, rather than drag the series on untill we're all sick of it.
