How different are the classes in FF1 Dawn of Souls compared to their earlier counterparts? Are the same class combinations useful as on NES, WSC and PSX versions, or should I go for totally new style party combinations? According to Collector, most fighting classes are stronger than ever, Black Mage is now a lot more useful and Thief is no longer a weakling but a very powerful character. A recent dungeon guide suggested that Red Wizard is absolutely necessary in those extra dungeons since he has Temper and Haste. However, even Black Mage and Ninja get Temper and Haste, IIRC. Collector also said Red Mage has become somewhat less useful now: his stat growth is quite slow and he stops being the useful jack of all trades quite quickly.

Would my favorite party of Fighter-Thief-Red Mage-White Mage still work well or should I take a whole new approach?

You shouldn't have any problems at all with that party.

I'd personally swap the Red Mage for a Black Mage (the amount of damage they can do is insane), but yeah, overall, your party is a decent one.

ninja's don't get temper, do they? That's like a lv. 7 or 8 bm. and besides, there are items that can cast things like temper and haste, so your fighter can use them to beef himself up *imagines a fighter in mr. universe, then proceeds to the restroom to regugitate his dinner.*

Ninjas get Temper in at least NES, WSC and PSX. Temper is a level 2 spell that raises target's attack power. Saber is a level 7 spell that raises caster's attack power. Ninjas get Haste too, which is a level 4 spell that makes the target get more hits, and that way more damage.

Here's how it seems to me:
Fighter: Still the same butt-kicking guy with swords.
Thief: Stronger, both in attack and health.
Red Mage: Less useful, due to th implemention of MP.
Monk (BlackBelt): Same, which isn't that good in my book.
Black Mage: Better, due to the implemention of MP.
White Mage: Better, due to the implemention of MP.

The reasion the BM and WM are better with MP is because now you can cast NUKE/Flare and FADE/Holy EVERY TURN if you want, which is useful against Chao and the extra bosses. But this is from my experience.

That's good. I didn't like the Black Mage in FF1 NES/WSC/PSX because their spells were so limited. I rather took the Red Mage because he could give you some extra attack power and healing support while still being able to give me enough black magic. Later in the game, I used items to cast offensive spells anyway.

well you'll find yourself using items at the end of DoS as well, you get items that cast healara rather than just heal. As well as items that cast flare and holy... but a higher INT does make these stronger so it is useful to have the high INT of the actual mages... and anyone can become an efficient fighter by the end, my knight has ragnarok, Master has his hands, White Wiz has ultima weapon, and Black Wiz has Masamune, they all do at least 800 damage when they attack!

Well, it's a bit different if you don't do the extra dungeons (where you find most of that stuff) but you'll still sue some magic casting items. Also, your level affects it.

Oh yes, another thing that makes BM's and WM's more usefull now is that INT actually DOES something. Like most RPG games, it affects the potency of spells. For example, in my most recent file, I took Fighter/Red Mage/White Mage/Black Mage. They are all Level 21 and I'm at the Earth Cave (I just did this a minute ago). Against Anacondas, my RM's Fire spell did 21 damage, while my BM's Fire spell did 67. My BM has 32INT while the RM has 16. This addition makes the Black Mage and White Mage much more useful again.

It's an optional sidequest.
FFI SPOILERS
Right after you obtain the airship, fly NW and look for some islands with holes in them. One of them has Bahamut, who gives you a challenge. Go to the Citadel of Trials, due East of the islands. You can either park your airship far East and walk to it, or you can use your ship and canoe and use the river near by. Once you go through the Citadel and get the Rats Tail, give it to Bahamut andhe will change your parties classes.

Thanks I just did and now am trying to get the benifits from it. Do you get more stats when you level now?

That too...

All classes can use better equipment and most gain access to more magic after the class change.
