I am at the stage where I can go into the North Cave and finish off the game.

But.

I haven't done anything - apart from getting Yuffi - outside of the main quest.

What is there for me to do?

A looot of things! Ehrm, maybe you should get a walkthrough.
Sidequests can make for up to a half of the game's length.

well did you get knights of the round summon? that summon rocks but you need a golden chocobo to get it or you can beat all the weopons and did you go into that tower in the village yuffi is from and fight those people on each floor? there are alot more but those are the ones i remmber right now

Yes thanks but I would like to do loads of side quests so I can complete the game with really good stats.

And once I complete the game that's it, I'm uninstalling it and getting FF8.

your in luck! i have just done them all and am on my way to kick sephiroths ass.... okies so here is the side quests i did before completing it...
go to sunken gilenka and morph all the monsters to get sources to bump up yours partys stats
get a gold chocobo and then go fetch the 4 hidden materias
get everyones 4th limits and ultimate weapons
get your chosen 3 characters to level 99
collect every single materia possible incl all abilities learnt (but not neccesarily master all of the materia)
defeat the 3 weapons
um....i thinks thats bout it you should have done all the other side quests coz there obvious and most are part of the story... hope this helps :D

dont forget to goto the golden saucer. get ur final attack, omnislash, and w summon. also go get the phoenix materia, phoenix+final attack works nice

Also, go to the Ancient Forest. (Accessible with Red Chocobo or Airship)
Sunken Gelinka (underwater)
Get a Gold Chocobo to obtain some of the most powerful materia!
There are two optional superbosses: Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon. You can try to defeat them, but that's easier said than done.
Getting Ultimate Weapons/Limits may take a while, but it's usally kinda fun (may be tedious).
Can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned atm.

Oh and Wutai (Yuffie's hometown) is over in the southwest area of the world.You have to either land really far away or grab yourself a Black Chocobo and ride over there (I think).

Beat the weapons and morph a ghost ship to get the guide book and give it to the man in Kalm to get a underwater materia, you will also get the earthharp for beating emerald weapon which turns into master magic materia,master summon materia and master command materia when you take it to the man in Kalm. and beating ruby gets you the desert rosse which turns into a golden chocobo when you take it to the Man at kalm.

Locating Vincent should be your first priority, followed by the Wutai subquest and the optional scenes in the waterfall cave and the Shinra mansion in Nibelheim. These things aid the story (i.e. character development) somewhat.

Yeah, Vincent! If you don't have him, then you probably don't have Red XIII's Final Limit Break as well. Go get it! It's in the Shinra Mansion.
Also, once you have Vincent and the Shinra Submarine or a blue/black/gold Chocobo, you can do the Lucrecia sidequest going under the waterfall on the middle of the Western continent. Visit her at least twice , once when you get Vincent and once from before you go kill Hojo (which is, immediately for you of you are in disk 3).
