It's not too late. You can draw the GF from Catoblepas in the Ultimecia's castle in disk four. But, until then, no Alexander for you.

Actually Doomtrain is very important if you want to boost most of your stats to 255
Try this one:
GF-Abil Med Ref
Giant's Ring x10 = 1 Gaea's Ring
Power Wrist x10 = 1 Hyper Wrist
Vit-J Scrolls x10 = 1 Orihalcon
Orihalcon x10 = 1 Adamantine
Hypno Crown x10 = 1 Royal Crown
Force Armlet x10 = 1 Magic Armlet
1 Dark Matter = 1 Luck-J Scroll
1 Shaman Stone = 1 Rosetta Stone

Tool Ref:
Curse Spike x100 = 1 Dark Matter
1 Dark Matter = 1 Shaman Stone

Forbid Med Ref:
1 Gaea's Ring = 1 HP Up
Hyper Wrist x10 = 1 Str Up
Adamantine x5 = 1 Vit Up
Royal Crown x10 = 1 Mag Up
Magic Armlet x10 = 1 Spr Up
1 Hundred Needles = 1 Spd Up
1 Luck-J Scroll = 1 Luck Up
Dark Matter x10 = 1 Holy War-Trial (not so sure, never tried it cause heck go on collect 10 freaking Dark Matters!?!)

Phoenix Spirit = Revive
Bomb Spirit = Kamikaze
Hungry Cookpot = Devour
Knights Code = Defend
Monk's Code = Counter

Anyway just go to the information on your menu and select Abilities->Menu Abilities and behold all the known refinements. And uh Return Damage is basically like counterattack only it returns 1/10 the damage whether attack or magic
Alexander on the other hand is important for the infinite Gil Trick (I am assuming you know how to do that too, right?).

Edit - Oops wrong GF, I meant Carbuncle not Alexander.

 NO!!!!!!!!! /xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif that would have been handy to know. i had to buy like 3000 pheonix downs to make a pheonix spirit. it cost well over a million gil, i had to sell a few megalixers to get enough

Megalixirs? why not Mega-Potions? They cost the same but are much easier to obtain. Just Refine 4 Tents or 2 Cottages (purchased in Esthar!! with Familiar acquired)

You can get limitless Gil even easier by defeating a lot of Mesmerize monsters (weird unicorns with boomerang horns) and refining their horns into Mega-Potions with the L-Med-Rf ability, then selling them with Sell-High enabled. Takes a bit time, though.
Being able to retrieve missed GFs at the castle is handy, though I've never actually had to do it. I didn't miss any GFs the first time through (except for those you can get whenever you want, e.g. Tonberry and Bahamut); and besides, I could only find about half of the special monsters in the castle till I looked at a guide.

That's actually the best strategy to get money, that I found myself *proud*

of course, using mug will make the whole thing about 3.5 times faster

and you can get a couple of hunder of thousands in like half an hour

I used Carbuncle's Recov-Med Ref Trick to gain Gil. Believe me it was heck boring.
