A point per letter yes; but to offset the popular letters, the bonus area will often contain lesser used letters. Solving also gives you a point per letter. ( I honeslty thought these were the rules when I started :D)

And yes; if the main puzzle is solved by letter guess or by a straight solve, the bonus section GOES buh-bye-bye na na! *busts an NSync* You cannot solve the bonus section either.
