Menu => config => Keyboard setup => Compact.

I had this problem when it was on my laptop. I had to install a gamepad just to get to the menu, since the - key on the numpad was the only way to get to the menu. I am sure I was stupid, since there was probably some other simpler ways to do this.

If you are used to FPS games (and I was) it's hard to get used to the controls in FFXI but once you learn them you'll find that they work wonderfully and efficiently. Stay away from the the mouse.

Use the arrow keys with your thumb to adjust the camera and the numpad with the rest of your hand to move.

Um.. hey this is kinda offtopic but how do you do that stuff with 360 is it the analog stick or what?

It's so cute to watch a newbie scream "omg I can't move!!!" in FFXI. It's like teaching a baby how to walk.

Yes 360 is with analog stick, typing is a pain, untill I plugged a keyboard in, now I use both, tbh I use keyboard for nearly everthing except moving around.

This might be lightly off topic but every time the OP posts a thread it makes me cringe at his etiquette.

1. People view all caps as shouting. It is not a good idea even if you want to grab people's attention as it comes of a little too harsh and annoying.

2. As for superfluous punctionation in your thread title (i.e. !!!!! or ???? or !?!?!???!??!111one!?!) it's probably best to just not. One punction mark will do as the above example can be annoying for the same reasons all caps can be annoyhing.

3. Try to be specific when posting a problem. Ambiguous titles (especially on more crowded message boards) are likely to get you ignored. Stating your question succinctly in the title will probably get people's attention more than all caps.

4. Make sure that your question hasn't been covered in a recent thread. Not really an issue the OP seems to have trouble with but some do. There is an FAQ for a reason, and it's a good idea to check the various forum stickies before making your inaugural post in a given forum.

5. Use of leetspeak, lack of capitalization and punctuation, and franticly typed rants will only get on people's nerves. They will also get you ignored as it is often difficult for people to read what you write, which in turn might cause them to not want to go through the trouble of responding to you.

6. If you have a tendency to be long winded or have a long story to tell make sure to avoid the dreaded walloftext. Separating your text into short paragraphs will make it much more readable and will make people happier to help you. Having a walloftext with all of the problems of #5 will probably get you ignored outright, or at best flamed.

7. If you are still reading this perhaps you are more steadfast than others. Try to keep your posts short when possible. People quickly tire of longwinded posters. This is probably my biggest faux pas in posting. When possible, try to avoid it.

There are other unspoken (and spoken) rules about etiquette for places like message boards but these were the ones that came to mind just now. Happy posting ^^

dont worry about it, some people are just freaky ass english majors.

most people can understand the frustration of needing help and being bad at punctuation or spelling should be a forgivable sin as long as you are polite and friendly.

There is a difference between bad grammar and this:

ZOMG I R NEED U 2 HELP ME PLZ!!!!!!!!!11

Even if you don't know all of your grammatical rules and are too lazy to capitalize and punctuate you can at least understand that text such as the above is an annoyance to a vast majority of people.

I had no problems understanding the thread starter at all. People come here for entertainment purposes, and if I want my English to be corrected, I'll just go back to school.

If like where my work requires me to use full and proper english and grammer skills, its nice to come onto the intenet and type like this. It is the future of the english language. lol
I think his thread starter just shows how much he wants to play the game but has been getting so frustrated at not being able to move. A simple "Help!" is not the same as "HELP!!!!!!" <<< that says much more.

That would certainly be valid if you were here alone talking to yourself, but as it is, there are other people to consider. If someone's too lazy to type an extra letter or two, then I'm too lazy to ready their crappy writing. It's just common sense to use good grammar/spelling because it's more effective. If I read the first post in a thread and the person is barely understandable I don't even bother listening to the person's problem. Whether or not I'm right for being that way doesn't matter. What does matter is if that person had just spent 5 more seconds doing it correctly they would have gotten a response from me, which is why they posted in the first place. It's not hard to write legibly, and it will get people to pay attention better than leetspeak.
Having said that, in this particular case, I don't see anything wrong with Tidus' post. I didn't have a problem at all understanding it. However just having HELP!!!! in the title is not necessarily going to grab people's attention enough to get them to listen. Specifics help start a person's brain off on the right track so when they're trolling, "Broken Keyboard" is going to be more effective than "Help!!!"
But I hope Yearg was just generalizing because I don't really know why he would single out this thread seeing as how there's nothing wrong with tidus' post. BurntPeanut's posts however...are a different story entirely. HAHA

I guess I was ranting a little off topic and wasn't really clear about that. This thread in particular isn't that bad. However, often one major problem leads to another. I guess a more appropriate thread to post my rant in would be his other thread.

While messageboards are sometimes for entertainment, he obviously came here seeking knowledge. When you ask a question, it is likely that the people that will be the most knowledgable are the same people that won't bother sifting through badly writen posts.

On this forum this is not really a problem, as everyone is going to respond to basically every thread. However, if he continues to play the game and asks for help in such a manner on a busier forum such Allakahzam his post is much more likely to get overlooked with such an ambiguous title. His other thread is likely to get ignored or ridiculed because he 1) used all caps 2) used too many !!!!!s 3) Spelled to as 2.

Maybe it's a horrible way of looking at it, but I'm an asshole I suppose. I'm not alone being an asshole. When asking for help it's best to not make yourself a target for assholes like me who will take you much less seriously if you seem to be immature. Additionally, in actually playing FFXI it is really not advised to talk this way. This advice will not only benefit the OP for posting on messageboards but will make people take him more seriously in the game.

You may say it's "just a game", but the way one comes across in the game directly correlates to how much fun they will have. If people don't take you seriously it will be difficult to get help. If you ask for help on a mission, "i need u 2 help me 4 mission 3" you are much less likely to get help than if you ask in a complete sentence.

Beyond that, as you level up I'll admit that most people don't use capitalization and punctuation but you are not likely to see people who are successful endgame asking, "ne1 wont 2 do sum1 a favir?" People just don't talk like that. I'm not saying necessarily the OP talks like that. He is nowhere near that juvenille. But when someone assumes you are very young and very immature it can have a very adverse affect on your reputation in the game which can do nothing but hamper your enjoyment.

Probably the reason you see so little of the above at higher levels is because these people get frustrated and quit as a result of not being taken seriously and having a lot of trouble getting help.

This thread is not about grammar or netiquette. I had no problem understanding the thread starter. Either help him or stay out.

I helped him plenty. Also my advice will help him. Perhaps you didn't read my last post, but I made a point that speaking that way would do a great disservice to someone playing this game. If he would take heed to that advice it would be helpful as well.

FFXI is a community game and to further yourself in the game it would behoove a player to understand how to act within a community. If were to post something with the thread topic of his other thread on Alla (where probably the most vast majority of FFXI players go for information) he would've been flamed very quickly.

Being able to communicate well both in the game with your fellow players as well as on the messageboards where people discuss and learn new information is highly important. I did not flame the OP. I ddin't say that he was stupid or anything along those lines. I merely made some points that might help him if decides to continue playing this game and I attempted to do it in a somewhat respectful way, which is more than he might have encountered under different circumstance in a different place.

lol I'm just glad I wasn't the only person who couldn't move. I discovered by accident that the scroll button opened the menu and changed keyboard to compact and wheee. I was using the left click to move for a while though, that was a pain.

As i see it, i am begining to understand that people prefer to read something akin to a book in the forum . ie proper grammer, spelling, sentance stucture, and format etc. well, i have seen 2 different topics on the subject and frankly i am getting irritated because even when there isn't really too much wrong with the post in grammer and spelling or even leet speak (meaning they're not using it) then people seem to feel obligated to just drone on about the subject, removing any fun that i could possibly experience and making me feel like i am in another english class. true the world doesn't revolve around me and true i am not bothering to use the above mentioned tools and little do i care to at this moment in time. is this the sticklers forum for people to bitch about English usage (?) ... if so i am in the wrong place . i came here because i love final fantasy and want to interact with more people who share my passion for it since i love FFXI and everyone i have so far met while playing. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (and yes i am practicaly shouting it as i am typing it -and my co-workers are like what the hell are you on buddy-) can there not be a place where we can focus more on the reason we came here in the first place than harp and nit-pick on petty things such as missing letters or lack of paragraphs ?!?!
Ps. if you don't wanna read my post don't, if you feel i am too imature because lack of "Insert Reason" (don't ask what it is, you know who you are and what it is) that is fine to . I just want to talk about Final Fantasy not High School or College level english basics, and how daft people who don't use them are. There are already threads in this forum for you to rant on about this, I have also posted on those threads (while using Proper english) and thats why i came here to get away from it.

Sincerely Frustrated
