I finally got a job after looking for over a month. I work in a little pizza, place although I actually haven't done anything with pizza yet. Mostly I deal with sandwiches, drinks, and cleaning. I've only worked there for a short while, but it's given me a sort of admiration for people in the service industry. Standing on your feet for 8 hours with no rest save a lunch break makes them sore. It kind of makes me wish I'd thought to look for a job answering telephones, because at least then I'd get to sit in a nice air conditioned building. But other than than that the job isn't too bad, and I really do need it. Saving up for University is tough.

I guess I kind of worry I'll lose it though. I find it hard to fit in comfortably with my co-workers, and we don't really share many common interests. Although I suppose that's to be expected considering they're all at least a few years older or younger than me. But it doesn't help that I'm socially awkward to begin with. I want to be able to join in on the conversations, but it's hard for me to be able to contribute more than a line or two. And these days, it less about what you know and more about who you know. Being able to make connections is important.

    Hopefully having this job will help you break out of your shell a little, you know? My job is super antisocial, so I'm a little bit envious of jobs like yours where it's important to get to know people.

    It will take some time before you can adapt fully to the new environment. Give yourself some time and you will do just fine.

    I've been a member of the food industry for a while. it's very hard being on your feet for that long. at my last job, I worked in an Italian restaurant's kitchen. there would be days (mainly Sundays) where I would work 12-14 hour shifts without taking a break. just stick with it! people will always want to eat, so in a way you have a type of "job security". eventually, you will find common ground with the people that you work with. just give it a few weeks. once you get your first Great paycheck, I'm sure that you'll feel a little bit better about things. I feel the same way as you every time I start a job. it's almost like starting a new year at school or something. I couldn't agree with you more about the whole "it's not what you, but who you know" thing more. but you can be one of those people that can go in the "who you know" bracket. just be yourself and have a positive performance.

    It'll take time to get to know the people you work with. You're not supposed to be best friends with them right away.
