Adult learners do not depend on educators for direction. They accept responsibility for their education, while youths often depend on others to formulate their lesson plans and learning methods.

The majority of adults thrive from being self-directed instead of being guided by instructors, classmates, and others. Adults usually prefer classes that are centered how to accomplish a goal or task, while youths are directed to learn concepts and theories. These learners also have accumulated knowledge through life experience, prior education pursuits, and work experience.
