The Task of Writing
Writing is a task that challenges many students. First, before embarking on any academic assignments, I find myself in a situation of anxiety and high pressure. Researching on a topic that one is not well conversant with is frustrating. To deal with the emotional challenges, all students ought to take some time to prepare for the assignment. Writing involves gathering relevant information and making a compilation that meets an academic standard. Even so, writing any report, journal, and research or answering questions has its challenges. This paper is a personal reflection on my writing process and how it is changing my viewpoint on assignments.
I start my writing immediately after the professor assigns us the tasks. I begin the writing process by determining the purpose of the document. Then I embark on generating and drafting what I view as potential content. In this stage, a critical evaluation of the sources to use is vital. For this reason, one has to read critically the available sources and analyze them according to what is learned in class. As a result, one produces evidence on the facts, methods as well as theories in the paper. It is important to focus on the content as it ensures that one is structuring evidence that corresponds to the topic. I then place myself in the position of the reader to allow more rethinking of the approach. More so, it allows me to make changes, mostly in areas that may considerably improve the paper. Then I ensure I proofread the paper. What is more, polishing or proofreading improves readability and coherence of the presentation.
I ensure that my friends analyze the content before submitting any paper to the professor. They act as my editors as they can find mistakes that I may have overlooked. They make certain that the writing is valuable, accurate, and has evidence on the points. However, after successful completion of the assignments, the anxiety is not much. The reason is that I often start by choosing topics that have more relevance to life. Finally, I prepare a final copy that is free of grammatical mistakes.
The easiest part of writing is when the topic in question relates to my life, experiences, and views. Work on such topics does not require much research, though it is important to know what the other people say about the issue. On the other hand, the most challenging aspect of writing is identifying a problem relating to the topic. Additionally, to provide possible solutions that I have to defend as the best ones leaves me with uncertainty. I find myself not sure if the content covers all the suitable solutions. To be more specific, I always discover that my original thought is not certain, leaving me with doubts. Another issue is separating my strong personal belief to what is provided as evidence. Arguing against what I strongly stand for becomes very difficult. However, writing makes one have a new perspective on the issues and thus allows one to gain knowledge that results from critical thinking. Moreover, selecting the most appropriate research tool is sometimes a difficult task. One can easily pick a wrong research tool, thus waste valuable time. Most of the time, I ask the librarian for assistance to save time in the long run.
In conclusion, as a student I write to learn and gain more knowledge and skills from the experience. From writing, people familiarize themselves with new arguments, formats, and structure. I have to write journals, do research, answer questions, evaluate, make responses, reflect on issues, and also do summaries for the college courses. As a professional career, writing is crucial for reports. Finally, as a citizen and family member, my contributions to others by writing will be helpful.
