Back in my D&D days I spoke to this DnD wierdo once, and he talked about Gnome/Dwarf/Assorted Midget Tossing as a method of getting rid of unwanted short party members AND checking out an area for traps. The Gimli Toss at Helms Deep in the movie The Two Towers was probably some kind of reference to this absurdly common technique.
