  1. Makes sense. Enjoy
  2. Awesome, thanks. I'll probably go with Guards! Guards!

I'll let you know how it goes
  3. Small Gods satirises religion, Going Postal satirises business and Ayn Rand, and Guards! Guards! satirises police procedurals and secret societies among other things. I could go into further depth but that seems a fair overview.
  4. Can you give a very brief (i.e. one sentence) non-spoiler synopsis of each so I can try and choose one?
  5. Small Gods, Going Postal, and Guards! Guards! all work nicely as entry points into the series. Which to start with probably depends on which kind of story you want.
  6. Where should I start with Discworld iyho? I've read various opinion on the matter but am interested in what you think.
  7. There are a lot of great albums (obviously, I would hope). Hot Rats is deservedly regarded as one of his best in his jazz-fusion idiom (other good albums in this style are Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo). In the Mothers period, Absolutely Free (which is a strong influence on a lot of progressive rock) is really amazing, as is We're Only in It for the Money which is a fantastic Beatles parody. Uncle Meat is a nice overview of his more experimental tendencies. Freak Out! is also regarded as one of his strongest albums but I suspect it isn't the best place to start; it wasn't until I got into some of his later albums that I really saw the appeal of it. Apostrophe (') and Over-Nite Sensation have some of his best known songs and are probably among his most accessible works. My personal favourite may still be Läther, which is also the album that got me into him. It's three hours long, but it covers nearly all of the styles he played and does a good job demonstrating the appeal of each of them. This isn't even close to a complete list but I'm probably pushing the length of visitor messages here so maybe I'll post more in another message.

I've honestly been half-considering it. Or just teaching English or who knows. It can't possibly be more miserable than retail. I really want to move to D.C. but who knows if I'll be able to find something there. I'm working on my résumé first and will probably shop it around and whatnot.

    Hope your students do well.
  8. I just decided recently to start listening to him. So far I've basically just been picking random songs and listening because his discography is so intimidatingly large. What would be a good complete album to use as a starting point? You would be the best person to answer this question.

Life has been pretty good lately. My students just took the AP Calculus exam TODAY, so a trout-ton of stress is off my shoulders for awhile, which is nice. It looks like I'll be out here for another year. Never really thought I'd be spending 3 years here when I first signed up, but here I am.

Y'know, you could probably teach a class in AP US History or AP US Government out here if you really wanted to. I know that's a big deal to just up and leave but something to consider.
  9. It was that predictable, huh? But yeah, he's amazing.

How's life these days? seems like we haven't spoken in ages
  10. As soon as I saw I got a rep I knew it was you and the Zappa.
