I think the reason they're kept separately is because "the Wood" is female, so only female Viera can hear 'her' and are considered exalted, special, better than the males who can't hear the Wood. I think the males live in their own male-only villages deep within the Wood (banished 'cause they can't hear the Wood), and are only called upon in specific "mating periods" (which come along every 100-200 years) to come and re-populate Golmore Jungle with more little bunny people. And then of course, there are those specific Viera women, like Fran, venture out into Ivalice, and become impregnated by Hume males. But that's just me.
We don't see any Viera children either.
Which means, in viera society the dads take care of kids & cooking and the moms work :D (don't I wish! )
