I agree fully. On the news yesterday they said that gas prices could rise to as much as $3.00 per gallon - or 45p per litre, which is pretty much bang on half of what we pay in Britain.

America: Quit whining. I love you guys, and the country itself, but you've got it better than anyone else alive when it comes to gas by a considerable margin. When you get to $6 or $8, then we'll listen to you complain, because then you'll be on par with us.

The difference in prices based on area is due to different chemicals which
reduce emisions being put into the gas. In San Francisco prices are very
high because it's so crowded and there's so much pollution that they need
to spend the extra money on the additives. Whereas in Texas or Wyoming
or something, you don't need to spend as much because they don't need
to worry as much about pollution.

It's like 2.69 at the cheapest place I know of here in Rhode Island.

The reason this is a viable problem for America is all the travel we HAVE to do. This is a big country, and things are spaced pretty far apart. I live way out in the woods of Western North Carolina and a decent job is a long way away.

PS: The point of this post isn't a flame, it's just something else to take into consideration when you tell me to stop my whining ;_;

There are people who live in Leicester, and many other towns, who commute to London daily for work. Leicester, for example, is in the region of 100 miles from London. Now yes, I've been to the US several times, and I understand what you're talking about there - but people in Europe have to drive as well, and often for just as far as you guys do. The only reason, I wager, that we have more public transport is because fuel prices are such a joke, and people just can't afford it. When that happens there, the same thing will come about.

Edit: also, one difference is that cars here are less gas-efficient than in the US. To give you an idea, on my dad's car, on highways, I can get at best 700-800km with 60 liters. So that's... 435-500 miles with 15 gallons... or about 30 miles per gallon. Sadly, most of the time is spent in town in traffic, which means often only 2/3 that if you're lucky.

My chemistry teacher said that it's expected to get even worse during winter, due to so many people using oil heat.

Sadly, public transportation in the US just isn't realistic outside of the cities. There are too many residences too far spaced out to make it feasible for a lot of people.

I'll admit I only "heard" this so I don't know how true it is. But from what people are saying (and I know gas prices were gonna go up anyway) right now prices are on the rise because of the hurricane. Supposedly we import most of our oil through the gulf? And now it's hard to travel through there? I dunno. I don't keep up with these things.

Arrggh. The gas here is about $2.80, just a month or two ago it was $2.05. I wish that Saudi Arabian king hadn't died.

Considering the already high prices and the damage done in Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina, I wouldn't be too surprised if gas rationing returned sometime in the future. I'm starting to be really glad I don't have a car now; I won't need it in college next year, and helping friends pay for gas and carpooling is so much better.

Gas sucks.

Time for a new fuel.
