Perhaps I can convert you into a prog rock fan. This site has free streaming samples of some of my favourite bands, and I've compiled a list of samples of some bands. For each link scroll down to the grey box and play them. Be warned that it's all very expirimental.
Pink Floyd Best one: Time. (This selection is really not a very fair view of the band. If you want a good sampler ranging through the whole discorgaphy of the band, get this best of.)
Emerson Lake and Palmer Best one: Hoedown
Frank Zappa Best one: Peaches en Regelia
King Crimson Best two: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Cirkus
So maybe not the songs I would have chosen for the best samples of the artists, but if you like what you hear let me know. And, if you're really interested, I have some more uploaded on my PC right now, and I could send you some more (PM me your email and I can attach them). Or you can look for some of the albums in your music store. The site also has reviews for literally every prog rock album in existence, and they're all fairly informative. Exact information is available if you want to try out an album.
EDIT: In light of Ryth's excellent suggestions, I'm going to add some more of my favourites:
Yes Best ones: the first three
Rush Best one: Overture/Temples of Syrinx
On the topic of progressive I'd reccomend everything Vincent said and Rush, Yes, Coheed And Cambria (if you like them check out The Prize Fighter Inferno), Tool, Ayreon, dredg, and The Sound Of Animals Fighting.
Love pretty much all of those bands, I saw dredg live and they blew me away.
Thank you for the big list of indie bands Ryth, I've surprisingly heard of a lot of them before. :choc:
Response is great so far fellows, do keep it up. :hourglas:
Perhaps I should list the sorts of bands I already listen to, to give you all a better idea of what to recommend.
Currently, I'm a big fan of metal/hardcore. I like Between The Buried And Me, Poison The Well, He Is Legend, Throwdown, Hopesfall, all those kinds of bands. I enjoy some emo bands (Sunny Day Real Estate, Chamberlain), some techno/ambient artists (Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada) and some hip-hop (NWA, Dead Prez). Also a very big fan of Radiohead.
Ryth did a pretty good job of naming some bands (save for a few, Franz ferdinand, Ahem) But some more indiewise bands you might want to try out are:
Indie:
-Sunset Rubdown (Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade is the man)
-Beirut (Indie mussic with an Eastern European feel, very cool)
-Final Fantasy (not the game silly, a violinist with very cool stuff)
-Neutral Milk Hotel (Lo-Fi awesomeness)
-Band Of Horses (Awesome band with highly reverbed vocals)
-Broken Social Scene (Poppy, Quirky, Brilliant)
-Cursive (One Of My All Time Favorite Bands Start out with 'The Ugly Organ' CD.
-The Flaming lips (May have heard of them)
-The Shins (Folky Soft-Rock)
-Viva Voce
-Bloc Party
Hardcore:
-At The Drive-In (More Post-Hardcore, but awesome.)
-Bear Vs. Shark (Lighthearted awesome stuff, not super hard)
-Circle Takes The Square (Might be too Hard/chaotic)
-Coverge (Great Hard, almost Math-core)
-The Dillinger Escape Plan (Very cool)
-Wolf Eyes (Uncategorizeable, but let's put them here ;) )
Rap/Hip-Hop:
-Aesop Rock
-Cannibal Ox (One of my faves)
-Sage Francis (meh)
-Gangstarr (awesome)
-Classified (Very cool)
Techno (I'm gonna lump synthpop/campy/everything close to techno in)
-Definitely Aphex Twin
-Black Moth Super Rainbow
-Ratatat (Awesome Sythed out guitar, amazing stuff, you are warned.)
-The Octopus Project (More in the Post-Rock Vein)
-Cinematic Orchestra (Electronica, moreso)
-Venetian Snares (incredible Break-core/glitch beats, again, amazing)
-We Will Build (Incredibly Happy Dance-Tronica)
That should keep you busy for a while. (Oh, and when your friends are wondering who/what the heck you are listening to because they have no idea who it is, thank me!)
Also, I would like to know if you have ever heard about a genre called 'Post-Rock'? Its really slow melodic stuff (usually with no singing) that is very amazing really. Some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear. If You are interested, I will post up some Post-Rock bands for you as well.
Long Post Out!
As mentioned by Shine On, post-rock is amazing stuff. Here's some of my favorite bands, with album reccomendations (bold is most reccomended):
- Post Rock:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Lift Yr Skinny Fists is absolutely mandatory)
A Silver Mount Zion (He Has Left Us Alone)
Explosions In The Sky (Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place)
Mogwai (Mr. Beast)
65daysofstatic (Fall of Math)
Do Make Say Think (Winter Hymn)
God Is An Astronaut (End of The Beginning)
Sigur Ros ("()")
- Electronica/Indie:
Mum (Finally We Are No One)
The Album Leaf (In A Safe Place)
Sujfan Stevens (Illinois)
Air (Moon Safari)
Bjork (Vespertine)
m83 (Before Dawn)
- Progresive/Alternative Rock:
The Mars Volta ( Deloused, Frances The Mute)
A Perfect Circle (Mer De Norms)
Radiohead (Ok Computer)
Faith No More (Angel Dust)
Mr. Bungle (California, Disco Volante)
Porcupine Tree (In Absentia)
King Crimson (Court of Crimson King)
I haven't listened to Lizard yet, but I most certainly shall now.
Since you like ATDI, The Mars Volta should appeal to you. They were founded by the former ATDI singer and guitarist.
Blues:
Muddy Waters
Taj Mahal
BB King
Robert Johnson
Jazz:
Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock
Other:
Try some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. You may like their later albums.
Try out ' Rachel's '
It's really different but is really good. There's no singing or anything, and I can't think of a word to describe the music... so just listen to 'em.
I forgot to mention The Mars Volta, so I second that suggestion.
If you haven't already, check out Muse as well. Definitely worth checking out. I haven't listened to them, but I hear Bloc Party, The Shins, Broken Social Scene, and Neutral Milk Hotel are also very good. Just thought you'd know.
I also like Phish, a band I've heard called prog and/or Indie on multiple accounts. I don't know if I'd say that, however it is a good band, and I thought it a good idea to reccomend them, because they're worth the listen to. I hear them called Jazz Fusion a lot of the time, so it seems to fit in regardless.
