This is for my last assignment in my principles of 3D modelling unit for the trimester. We have to model, texture, rig and animate a low-polygon character (limit was 3,000 triangles).

I just finished modelling out the character, some of you may guess where I got my idea from, and I reached 2854 triangles. I now have to rig it (skinning is going to be the worst bit) and then texture it (somewhat fun).

So yeah, took me around 2 days to sketch out the image planes, and 3 days to model it out. I'm hoping that rigging and skinning only take around 2-3 days, and then I can focus on texturing it.

You texture that with Pirate Red Mage colours and it'll officially look awesome.

I think it looks really good so far. It resembles a FF III DS model and I guess it wouldn't look too out of place in the actual game... too bad there is not Pirate job there :)

That's really an amazing low-poly model. Is it intended for a game engine by chance?

I'd love to see what that could look like with some good normals baked onto it. This is some quality work.

Well, the engines we use are the colleges own built one, but I don't think we're putting it into an engine. It'd be nice if our lecturer did, just to show us, but it doesn't matter I guess.

Also, I'm not sure exactly how to normal map something. Lame, hey? XD Maybe over the break I will look into it and try it out! :D

I just noticed now it only seems to have three fingers... :o would you go over your maximum poly count if you added one per hand?

I might be able to, but I thought the claw-like hand looked kind of cute. I'll see after I finish this essay and collage. ^^;

It is cute indeed, and it'll sure will be even better when skinned, but it does look a little bit strange.

Update! I have made up my own rig, I got a lot of information from random tutorials and some documentation, and I think it's all good. Lots of controls for everything, all I need to do is bind it and then paint the weights.

So, now once I have finished it off I will be UV mapping it (which is just the absolute WORST. And then painting textures (fun!).

And OMFG, UV Mapping is my most hated field of 3D. I understand there are newer ways to go about it, and we're even getting to the stage of painting textures (i.e. ZBrush). But we've had to do it the old standard way, which is painful...

Now on to the fun part of actually painting the textures! Yay!

Man, I couldn't imagine doing that. I think the only time I've done uv mapping though was with really, really simple objects so it wasn't hard to match everything up.

This is all fantastic. I've never done anything in 3D, but I love it!

Edit: I'll just replace this post with the final product. I will also update the original post to show it.

Also, incase anyone was interested, this was the final texture map I made in Photoshop (just used an airbrush, lots of work and it still looks bad). Note that the original texture size is 1024x1024, I just reduced it so I could show it here.
