The DBZ movie seems to be a DB movie

After looking here Dragonball (2008)
and Dragonball (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I realized that it's a Dragon Ball movie, not Dragon Ball Z.

Does anyone actually plan on seeing this? Especially since like 98% of DB fans are more DBZ fans than anything else?

Also, I didn't see a thread about it, but if anyone has more info than that, please tell!

I also like how people are still freaking out even though they haven't actually seen any screens or any pictures or anything other than word of mouth. Apparently the DBZ trailer is suppose to be in the opening previews with the 100000 BC movie.

I'm surprised that people like James Marsters and Emmy Rossum are involved in this, but still.. I've never been a fan, and unless the trailer is super cool I probably won't watch this movie.

The fact that it's produced by Stephen Chow is reason enough for me to at least keep an eye on this one.

Stephen Chow did two great versions of the Monkey story. I don't see why this wouldn't be any different.

Latest bit of info is that Ernie Hudson is in it now. First Chow Yun Fat and now Ernie Hudson...not to discredit any of the other actors, but the amount of 'credibility' those two bring to the film makes me not know what the heck to expect from this project.

I don't care for DB too much, but I love DBZ n.n

I was disappointed to hear that it was Dragon Ball and not DBZ (I mean how awesome would it be to hear OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAANNDNDNDNDND
!!!1!!!!11! in a theater?), but I think it'll be worth watching no matter what the outcome is xD

I don't think you can expect all the cheese of the TV show.

It'll be a whole new unacceptable brand of cheese.

Funny, Dragon Ball was the version I liked.

I can't wait for this movie. It might be the most hilariously bad film ever created.

Sweet deal to me. Dragonball is so much better than DBZ. This has my interest now. Even more so since it is based on Dragonball which means we might not have to put up with a mountain of bad graphics XD

I expect a martial arts tournament thing going on since it is Dragonball.

Goku is in high school. Don't expect anything Dragon Ballish.

The source material was always called Dragon Ball. The 'Z' was only added for the anime version that most people know, and the US version of the 2nd part of the Dragon Ball manga added the Z to tie in with the popular anime easier. But Toriyama's Dragon Ball was Dragon Ball (with no Z (and definitely no GT)) the entire time.

Also, in the original manga and Japanese animated version of that now famous scene, Vegeta actually states that his power level is over Eight Thousand.

But yeah, 'Dragon Ball', when Goku was a kid, was overall a more well put-together story than the stuff that happened after there was more than one blond haired dude running around. The story was supposed to end after Goku defeated Frieza, but...the nerd is slipping out again.

They're aiming for an August '08 US release for this movie.

I look forward to this movie replacing 1995's live action Fist of the North Star as my favorite film of all time.

Oh, okay. Then it's Dragon Ball Z I've seen on TV. I remember there was this one fight that'd just go on for like 10 episodes.. It was like the soap opera of fighting.

Yeah I liked it when I was 12...but I always liked Dragon Ball more...it seemed more light-hearted and fun...DBZ is far less rare to see anywhere, since it's more popular.

I much preferred Dragon Ball over Z. More light hearted and fun. Not so much commentary during a fight. No fake drama. Lots of entertainment. And it wasn't all about fighting. Lots of adventure too. Good stuff

I have pretty much been waiting for this film my entire life. A live action Goku. Bad ass. And with both James Marsters and Chow Yun Fat, I am even more excited. There are a few other familiar names, but these two stick out. I can hardly contain my excitement. :D

And yes. DB was so much better than DBZ. I needn't be redundant and repeat what has already been said. Though DBZ's fight orientated focus did attract me. I have always liked fighting. :p

And GT did not suck. I don't care what you say. It enthralled me just as much as the others. Well, not as much as Dragon Ball, but nothing can beat that. And I wasn't particularly a fan of the Buu saga. It was...meh.

After seeing Speed Racer, I can't wait for Dragonball.

Now if only that rumor about the Sailor Moon movie starring Lindsay Lohan turns out to be true.

There's this guy that comes up to the Arcade that pointed out something that should be drawn to attention:

WHY IS GOKU CAST AS A CAUCASIAN AMERICAN?


I mean, MORE THAN half the cast are Asian, Chinese to be more specific... The whole original creation came from Asian roots! And I'm not just talking about the Manga and Anime, I'm talking about "Journey To The West" Son Wukong, the character that Son Goku was inspired from...

But no... This is just another blatant in-your-face American Demographic Dominance Bull:skull::skull::skull::skull:, that Pharoh pointed out and it made a lot of sense.

No I know a lot of people don't want to be bothered with this (gasp) realization, but when he pointed it out, it just has be noted.

And before someone else tries to use the lame-ass excuse of "Well since Goku is an "alien", maybe it is Caucasian-American."

Like Akira Toriyama envisioned Goku as a Caucasian-American male from outer space just so many years after America dropped bombs on his homeland, possibly which also inspired the atomic explosions we've seen in DB/DBZ/DBGT... *** I hope you noted the sarcasm*** :devil:

Bottom line, they could have found an Asian actor to fill the role, but they chose not to, and it's just plain... well, I'll say it... Racist.

And much like people don't want to deal with the "White Jesus" issue, they'll probably remain silent about this one too...

Just had to share it... Sorry if I sounded angry... Well, because I sorta am... But it'll probably be a... 'good' movie.

And yeah the guy at the Arcade was Pharoh Amon Khan... Don't kill me because I know the guy, he just made a good point and well, he did mention this site. He'd like t'know what responses it this would get. Well, we'll see.

Actually as I stated earlier, I would prefer that he be portrayed by an ASIAN actor. More than half the cast is Asian, so why suddenly put an American White Guy as the lead character from a Manga/Anime that was inspired by an ancient Chinese (Asian) fable?

And I know I SOUND racist, I'm not trying to be, but I'm trying to point out the racism in American movies that always has a Caucasian as the Great White-Warrior from beyond. It's the image of Demographic Dominance that I found to be subliminal racism. Just like the argument that people don't want to talk about: Why did they make Jesus "white"?

I mean, c'mon... The more people ignore this or push it off the more we'll have more of....

The Last Samurai

10,000 B.C.

ABC's Adaption of "Moses" (2004 I think) (main characters white, everyone in the background; people of color)

The Wanderer (some movie about a european raised by Native

Americans and then fights these armored Vikings or something)

The Forbidden Kingdom (white hero from another time)

Heroes (TV Series) y'know what I'm talkin' about...

And so many others...


I apologize for my ugly outburst earlier, I too can be subjective to getting heated a discussion (if this can be called that).

But I think this is something to be acknowledge if "racism" is to be acknowledge in ALL aspects, blatant or otherwise.

It's something that I feel that just CAN'T be ignored any longer...

The target audience is primarily teenage caucasian males. This type of thing is to be expected, I think. It's a sound business decision, although perhaps not a sound story-telling decision. Regardless, it's something you're just going to have to learn to accept. Complaining about it on an internet forum (specifically one devoted to Final Fantasy and not Dragon Ball) isn't a productive way to raise awareness and counter this problem.

This forum/thread is FOR such discussions. I'm talking about the subject matter: the film; and it's that "Something to learn to accept" attitude that would still have African American sitting at the back of the bus, so I REFUSE to be silent about what I feel. I'm voicing my opinion about the casting of THIS FILM and that's what this thread "THE LOUNGE" is for, not just secularly "Final Fantasy". Remember: I DID NOT START THIS THREAD... I'm participating just like anyone else.

And I don't care if the so-called "target audience" is Caucasian males (unproven I might add); DBZ in general has influenced hundreds if not thousands of young males of all "audiences"'. If it was about "money" alone, they would have done something called "Respecting the Source Material".

Kinda like what Disney did with "The Lion King" "Snow White" "Cinderella" and so on... Most kids thing DISNEY made these characters.

At least in "Gargoyles" they respected the the origins of the stories and cultural sources they pulled their stories from... Oh wait, Gargoyles was created and produced by Greg Weisman and Frank Paur, Disney just aired the show and took their name off as well....

So I'm not gonna "just accept it". I've done enough of that and I'm tired of it and saying what I got to say because it NEEDS to be said.

And while I applaud your enthusiasm, I just think that if you're aiming for some significant social change, you're starting in the wrong place. While I'm very much against racism in any form, I can't bring myself to care very much that Goku is being cast as a white male. It's Hollywood. It's been bastardizing stories for decades. It's one of those things to which I've grown accustomed and have even come to expect.

I respect your desire to instigate social change, I just think that this movie is so incredibly insignificant, it's not worth getting one's knickers into a twist.

Speed Racer is in theaters now, Dragon Ball in the works, and Evangelion now forcasted for 2009... Depending on DB's sucess, I guess we will be in for an era of Hollywood Anime Remakes. :(

Not to mention Akira and Ghost in the Shell. We're already in the 'anime remakes' era, which seems to be a byproduct of the 'Comic Movie' era.

And that's exactly why this needs to be brought to attention. Of Course you wouldn't 'care' it's just a fan-based film that people are salivating to see only because it's from paper to live-action. The fact that it has Asian roots and Asian actors and ONLY an American Caucasian is cast in the lead role (a god-like hero), is rather racist. And by 'growing accustomed' to such things is why racism and unfairness continue blot this world. It may SEEM 'insignificant' to you and others, but THAT'S EXACTLY how and why they keep doing it.

Hollywood does indeed basterdized, polarize, and standardize a lot of negative images. Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball"; The "Blade" movies series where as the original Blade never needed a "serum" so Hollywood wanted to give him a crutch, his own "kryptonite" if you will to make him more... 'mortal' I guess... But why does Blade (an African American Superhero/Role Model) look like he's shooting Heroin in the first two films, and smoking Crack in the third movie?

Basically, you're politely trying to get me to be silent. It is that which seems insignificant that is often significant...

If I remain silent then nothing will happen, if I say something and this is as "insignificant" as you say, then nothing will happen... however by the responses thus far, that is indication that something has happened...

You can ignore what I've brought to the table, but you can no longer not acknowledge it. In the future you can choose to ignore this conversation should it arise again in another medium, but you have to acknowledge it to ignore it... That is the seed I'm sowing in people's minds. The more people acknowledge it the less they will (hopefully) accept it.

Think about it... Before "Seat-belts" were a law enforced procedure people never gave it much thought, now it's practically subconsciously written into the act of driving itself. Note a valid point, but I trust you understand my meaning.

My aim is not to be racisit, I'm not... But to point out how I see that this demographic casting IS racist. I'm sure Dragon Ball will be a... HOPEFULLY Good movie... But remember: People that become complacent are easy to control.

I'm not massively excited tbh :/ I don't think it'll be spectacular and the characters lack the punch of the original from that Shonen Jump scan.
