The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Am I the only one here who saw New Moon? Where are your heads people? Stick the firmly up your asses and go see the greatest movie of all time!

No, really, it was good. The first one was bad, but this one was faaaaaabulous. I can only think of one important scene that was left out from the books. I can't believe they managed to cram in everything, and so beautifully and perfectly. Every alteration they made from the book was for the better and it was sexy.

Some of my friends are going crazy because of this. They're really into the whole TWAILAIGHT thing. I've only seen the first one, but I'll probably see this one at some point as well.


Let's just face it, Pattinson is kinda hot too. In that "I'm skinny, have big jaws and glitter in sunlight" kind of way.

Robert Pattinson looks like a foot. And yet I still totally want him. He's got broken-boy face. So into it.

That's pretty much it. However, the series is still horrifically misogynistic (despite being written by a woman) and promotes a thoroughly dysfunctional and borderline abusive view of romantic relationships, thus I can't condone anything related to it. Though I did laugh at Pattinson speaking up about his view of the books. He gained quite a bit of respect from me by doing that.

Yeah, the books are super misogynistic. Despite being written at a fourth-grade reading level, I don't approve of them being read by children.

They appeal to the sick side of a woman. The side that likes to be protected, taken care of, cherished, and stalked by sexy sad-faced boys.

And this movie lived up to all of those things. And the special effects did not suck; it was kind of crazy. The fight scene with the Volturi was tits.

I was gonna come make a sarcastic remark and/or talk some shizz. But instead I just want to say thank God someone finally just admitted these aren't necessarily things people should glorify and enjoy, but just can't help it (for whatever reason). So honestly, no. I never saw the first one. Never will. And have no intention of even touching the books

I still laughed at nearly every scene with Edward, especially since he's, like, always sobbing or looking uncomfortable. But it's kind of amazing how much the movie improves after Edward leaves and it's just about Jacob and Bella hanging out and liking each other...until the werewolves show up.

Compared to the first movie, these special effects were amazing. In general, they were pretty good.

And, yes, the hallucinations were stupid and pathetic. When I was first reading the book I was excited that she was starting to screw being safe and live a little, but then she started hallucinating and I just wanted to beat her with a stick.

BUT IT'S STILL HOT.

I have seen various trailers and clips for this movie and going by those alone there is absolutely no way, whatsoever, that this movie can be anything other than absolutely horrible.

I love you in almost every way, ShlupQuack, but I think you have bad taste in movies.

I have a very wide taste in movies. It does indeed include some pretty epic crap.

So Mandee, when are you and me and Pie going to go see this movie? We should bring some delicious spiked drinks in with us and hoot at the screen.

Twilight is awful, but it's still enjoyable. There are some things I cant help but enjoy, no matter how much it sucks and how little sense it makes. The books are terribly written and she really needs the gift of a thesaurus (stop saying russet, damn you), the characters are one-dimensional, and yes it is terribly misogynistic. It pulled me in all the same. And before any comments are made, I am very well read.

Plus, with all the stress of being an 'adult' and all the complications of real relationships, sometimes being able to giggle like a 13 year old with your girlfriends is highly enjoyable.

this movie was great and i loved it, the wolf fights reminded me o my chihuahuas going at it. how ever i liked the series more back when it was litterly just a fan base (small) and not a fandom (large), not it seems like everyone is calling them self a twilighter these days, all the twilightweights out there need to be prosicuted for identy theft of fruad or something, hell, i like the harry potter movies but you dont see me obssesing over something i wasnt originaly apart of.

I thought anyone over the age of 21 wasn't allowed to like this series.

I'm all for liking some of the kind of stupid, "epic" series that are hitting the big screen. I watched The Matrix, I watched Star Wars, I even watched every Harry Potter in theaters (and enjoyed the books, even). Add to that a (very embarrassing) love of Anne Rice, and all of her novels.

But these movies don't do anything for me. Even a little.

At first I judged them to be romance novels masquerading as vampire fiction. Then I realized (after reading about half of the first book and watching bits and pieces of the terrible movie) that they're not even attempting to masquerade as vampire fiction, really. It's like saying that you can read (or watch) the Narnia Chronicles and separate it from Christianity. Any adult in the western world will immediately realize The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is just a reboot of the NT, and likewise that Twilight is nothing more than the deluded fantasies of a melodramatic woman who used vampires as a symbol, not of twisted evil, not of separation from God or humanity, but - wait for it - unrequited love.

God, it's like she missed the point when she was forced to read Dracula in eleventh grade.

The author may suck at writing, may have a retarded vocabulary, may write characters about as deep as a wet sack, but she nailed the sexual tension. That's why women read it. Very few love stories tease in that way. Either the main couple sleep together fairly early, or the book ends with one soft kiss. The Twilight saga teases and taunts us until the fourth book, where they have sex. A lot. We dig it.

No one has claimed that the books are good. We like them for totally trashy reasons. And, really, young girls should not be reading these. I'm sure everything you like is super classy, but some of us like to slum it with mindless entertainment once in a while.

And I know about the series because it's impossible not to know about the series.

Certain things you said have seemed to back up what I was saying though. You say young teens should not read them but the books are so clearly at that level. Which means the author really WASN'T aiming there but landed there because of the pathetic prose.

Shlup says young teens shouldn't read them and that means the author wasn't attempting to write a book for young teens? I don't understand.

Whether she was or not, that's where it ended up. The Da Vinci Code is written about as poorly, with horrid descriptions on all levels and Goosebumps-esque 'cliff-hangers' at the end of too many chapters, but that's a book marketed at adults. And I think that's probably the clincher there; marketing. I don't think too many authors (especially new, unknown and unestablished writers) have very much say on how the book is marketed or who it should be aimed at; they'll just be happy it's selling.

There are many many poorly written books made for adults, and even more made for kids.

Well, there's at least one thing based on it that has produced something truly magnificent. The score to "New Moon" by Alexandre Desplat is jaw-droppingly beautiful (just listen to the opening track if you don't believe me, and that's only the beginning!). In my opinion this is the first time since "The Golden Compass" that Desplat has written anything impressive and worthwhile, and he elevated the whole romantic aspect of Twilight into bittersweet, epic and Victorian heights with just his music. I say that's quite impressive in and of itself. ;)

This movie was so much better than the last. It had so much detail from the book. I hated the Twilight movie, but I loved New Moon. (:

Bella didn't look so scummy in this one, either...

I noticed the music overall was a lot better in this movie. I liked the soundtrack for the first one, but in this one the music was less distracting and set the mood better.

There was an impressive amount of detail from the book. The only scene I can think of that wasn't in there was Bella going to the empty Cullen house.

There is not one good thing about any of the books. I still own them all. There is not one good thing about any of the films, and the two to come will be just as horrific (ENOUGH OF YOUR STROKE FACE BELLA SWAN!). I will still watch them all.

Well, fortunately the cinematography in New Moon is supposed to be bearable, unlike the screenplay (and most of the acting). Unfortunately, they didn't put Tokala Clifford as one of the Native werewolves so I won't be paying for this film.

Oo, I Googled him. He's cute. Looks like he was probably a bit too famous for them though.

Of maybe he didn't want to be in it. Potential to destroy his apparently serious acting career and all.

He's just lovely. He hasn't done anything since Rez Bomb, so I thought he might get bored and try it out, but he's pretty serious about his heritage, so that might be why he didn't join in. You should listen to his voice, it's great.

Well I read the first few chapters of the first book a few years ago and didn't like it and put it down. Then I sucked it up and read the rest of it more recently. Still sucks. I didn't even get the giddyness or sexual tension out of it. To me it was more of, "Oh I am in love with you" "Oh ok I'm in love with you too but I want to eats you." "ok sounds good :) We're in love :)"

The "sexual tention" was a pathetic attempt to give some meaning to the series, because otherwise it'd be seen as an empty love story. I checked imdb to rad some critics but if it has so far 4.5 and Twilight had 5. sth I don't want to watch it. I thought it'd be better after the fiasco of the first one, but unless they ignore half of the book and stop the "tension" and horrible acting the series of Twilight will never be good. :( I think they're trying to stick to the books and stories (with some changes)... perhaps Jacob kissing Bella was not a bad idea after all - it perhaps made people fell something appart from the "oh Edward is so hot" - but on the other hand now millions of girls will "hate"/ "love" Jacob :eep:

um, what?.. Jacob isn't supposed to force Bella into kissing him untill the 3rd one... dissapointing if they jumped it earlier into the 2nd movie instead of waiting, but i'll still go see it anyway...

Ok, so I've only watched half it so far, but already it's just as craptastic as the first one. I mean c'mon! It can't be that hard! Even the CW with their tiny budget manages to make Vampire Diaries decent in its own way. How is it that Twilight can't do the same? It's cringe worthy bad. The three leads should never act again. They're terrible.

The rest of the cast is ok though.

And maybe Dakota Fanning will save the day. *watches some more*

I've quite enjoyed her in some of the other movies she has been in. I don't think she's one of the greatest actresses of her generation but she isn't absolutely terrible like most of the other actors in the film. You can't turn :bou::bou::bou::bou: into gold no matter how good you are. It's hard to turn an absolutely :bou::bou::bou::bou:ty book into a halfway decent screenplay as well, even though the screenplay sucked just as much.

And Italy! I wish the Italy parts were a bigger bulk of the film. Loved how they ended that whole segment. That is what vampires do, not twinkle like little stars.

Vapor Edward was kinda hysterical.

As for Stewart, I find her unwatchable even in interviews. I hate how stilted she is with her dialogue. It's almost like a half stutter. And the way the words have to sort of force their way out of her mouth as though she's too tired or stoned to bother uttering her lines. It's like she's being forced to play the role and her discomfort is distracting and awkward. And it makes me want to slap a bitch, cause if you're being paid to do a job, do it right! Do you think Stephen Moyer, likes running around as a Southern Vampire gentlemen always yelling, "SUCKEH IS MAHN!! MAHN!" all the time? I doubt it! Dialogue can be cheesy as hell, but it sure comes out better if the actor is committed to their role, regardless of how lame they think it is. Or in this case, how lame it *actually* is.

What? I mean i'm no fan of this twilight thingy cos come on its for 12 year old girls. but saying someone looks mean is kind of ridiculous, whats wrong with looking mean, just the way their faces are.

The soundtrack is superb... and having had it since release I looked forward to seeing how they used it for the movie.

I knew songs would pop up at this and that moment etc xD (eg. I KNEW Bon Iver/St. Vincent's song would play during a sadface montage XDDDD!)

Music didn't suit Bella's "D;" scenes, I think the orchestral score tried WAY too hard and it would have been a lot less akward if they left it silent.

I loved the special effects and I loved how beatifully atmospheric Victoria dodging Wolves to Thom York's Hearing damage was, no seriously, I loved that scene so much I'd go see it again just to experience that gorgeously done scene.

But not see it for Bella and Edwards need to snog so constantly, if we were to string them all together their kisses go twice as long as Watchman's sex scene.

A couple of his facts are wrong and he leaves out some of my favorite things (eg, when the baby is first pulled form Bella, it has a full set of teeth and starts to eat her), but, yes, Breaking Dawn is going to be epic.

Also, New Moon in 15 Minutes has been posted. I super highly recommend it, as well as Twilight in 15 Minutes for those who haven't read it.

Breaking Dawn would probably cross over into "so bad it's good" territory if it weren't being marketed at teenagers. The butthurt from disappointed smeyer fans alone was utterly hilarious.

So I just saw New Moon with Shlup. Pretty good adaptation, much better than the first one. It was still lame and all, but I enjoyed in nonetheless.

Have you read the books? I only ask because the author actually uses the Wuthering Heights comparison a LOT and it's neat that you noticed the parallel even though the movie tried to pass it as a Romeo and Juliet deal. Bravo.

Also, yes Jacob is sympathetic character in these first two books. After I read New Moon I was leaning towards him... then in the next two books he proceeds to act like a total ass and an overly aggressive (SPOILER)mouth rapist. Stupid Jacob xD

I'm going to uselessly point out that each installment in the saga is kind of geared towards a classic novel. I think it was the first one that was geared towards Wurthering Heights, the second Romeo & Juliet, and I don't remember the rest. Or maybe the first was Pride & Prejudice and the third was Wurthering Heights. Something like that.

I read WH in high school and there's a BBC adaptation that I really love. It did what most previous adaptations failed to do: complete the story. Most versions end with (SPOILER)Catherine's death, and cut out the way (SPOILER)Heathcliff spends fifteen years wrecking vengence on everyone else until Catherine (II) and Haerton redeem the sins of the whole family.

A couple of neat things:

1) Gratuitous beefcake. Not that it's my thing, but I appreciated the symmetry of objectification. Fair's fair after all.

2) The Wilhelm scream in the action movie-with-a-movie was awesome! In fact the whole action movie was hilarious with just the dialogue.

Although both are superficially similar, about a woman torn between a good man and a bad man, I have a lot more emotional investment in Elizabeth and Darcy because they learn from their mistakes. Bella and Edward are basket cases, and I don't hold out much hope that they will improve in the sequels.

Because you're the one taking offensive to it.

I don't find it offensive, I find it stupid that someone is trying to summarise a book (any book) in about ten words or so as evidence that said book is crap. If you want elaboration, I think Pride and Prejudice is funny, I think the main characters spark against one another with the sort of dialogue that has influenced countless romantic exchanges ever since, and Mr Darcy is one of the best anti-heros in all literature. it's a book that still has a lot to say about human relationships. I can't really give a thesis on these things. What I do know is that it's on a different planet to Twilight.

Fine then, I will go into a deep description of why Pride & Prejudice sucked.
There was no depth to the story line. Most of the book consisted of surface level romance with very little character development for anyone other than Elizabeth, Darcy and Wickham.
The characters were either pompous or annoying, with the exception of Mr Bennet and Mr Collins, who provide some slight enjoyment of small sections of the book.
The plot is so remarkably simple that you could look at the front cover and pretty much predict the ending.
And finally, there is more dialogue in that book than there is clichés (which is hard to say). It leaves a complete black and white world of blandness until the one chapter where there is a bit of description of Mr Darcys house.
I suppose, taking that into account, Twilight is a little better. At least it attempts to engage the audience in another way other than female ramblings about different types of men.

I found Pride & Prejudice to be a horrifically dull read, personally. I'm sure it was fabulous in its time, but I require a little more oomph. Which, by the way, they did add the the movie, which I adore.

I find Jane Austen to be an incredibly dull writer, though I admit I don't like books of that genre and era, for the most part. The only exception is probably The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. That book is just great!

Apparently a lot of people didn't get the deep undercurrent of social commentary undercutting Pride & Prejudice. Which, if you don't know much about the era it was written in, is pretty easy to do. If you think it's "just surface level romance" though, then you've missed the point. Virtually every development in the novel is a backhanded commentary on some social convention or other of Austen's era.

All that said, I can understand not finding that enjoyable - I personally prefer the miniseries as well. But to claim that it's not good, or to insult it by mentioning it in the same breath as Meyer's work - is just shockingly ignorant, unless you'd care to demonstrate the same depth of social commentary in Twilight (which is highly unlikely).

I don't see much in common between the two, other than the central love triangle, and that's a pretty common plot element. The characterizations, themes, dialogue and morals are light years apart.

Having a message doesn't make something good. If the rest of the book stills sucks, then that's a negligible effort.

Of course, which is why it helps that Austen's writing and characterisation are quite astute.
