The Neochu? No, you cannot find it at the moment. It is one of the missions. You get this mission in (SPOILER)Oerba. Also it is very easy to beat this monster if you use Vanille's "Death" spell - normally I would not use magic like this but for the Growth Egg it is okay. I can't read much of this thread as all I've done so far is kill a few marks and (obviously) a bunch of monsters. What I will say is that Gran Pulse is beautiful. I love how the animals are of all different sizes. The pack of elephant-like-thinks is amazing. <3
But. More importantly, and tragically. The death at the start of the chapter. I am not kidding when I say that I was mortified when that Chocobo was hunted by the pack of wolfy things. MORTIFIED. I mean, I'll laugh at Aeris dying, and it was a major part of a story, so it's understandable that they'd show it for emotive purposes (you know, like, how it makes you happy). BUT WHY WOULD THEY SHOW THIS?!?! IT IS A CHOCOBO.

So I just got to chapter 11 earlier tonight and it's like I FINALLY started the real game. Gran Pulse is badass and there is so much there that can kick my ass, and I had fought pretty much everything earlier in the game. I'm on the third or fourth mark, whichever's the first teleporting one -- I accepted the mission then had to leave for my library hours.

Yeah, this map is a pretty crazy contrast to the straight-line of all the other maps. I am so lost right now.
When I touched the dinosaur (SPOILER)he just stomped his feet near me and I totally died.
Chapter 10 should've just been skipped. Whatever miniscule amount it added to the game is nullified by its incredible suckiness.
But yeah, I was also thinking why there couldn't have been other areas earlier in the game with a bit more expanse to them. Not everything has to be like Gran Pulse, of course, but a little more expanse and a few of those Mark hunts earlier on would've been cool. Chapter 11 is the first time you're doing anything different from everyone else, which is kind of sad.
EDIT: Shlup, if those Behemoth Kings are what I think they are, they are certainly tough. You really need to be able to kill it before or just as it's transforming (which means within one stagger bar), because then it just heals up and you're screwed. I've managed to kill two so far, but also died/restarted a couple of times before figuring this out.
Once he's in the second stage you basically need to go all out - and I am talking Tri-Disaster here - to get the stagger to stop that horrible Sunder attack.
Yeah that guy is a nightmare. I could probably kill him before his second stage now, since you've said that's possible. I assumed it was triggered by low HP and unavoidable. I prefer attacking the little penguin things. The lion things are easy but they keep jumping out from the side of the screen and scaring me so I hate them.
So long as you have a sentinel, you should be okay against the behemoth mark, at least. I hate having to use sentinels because it means changing my characters and resetting paradigms, but oh well.
I'm starting to think the main reason the rest of the game was so linear is more so that people didn't start getting sidetracked from the story and then giving up on it because there was too much to do (like a lot of people did in FFXII). I mean, if every map was expansive and we still had all those cutscenes then... man, I don't think I'd have got very far into this game at all. :p
I think the datalog is a good counter to that, though. If you forget anything that happened it's all there, and it also shows up whenever you load a game.

That's true, but even if FFXII had that, I'd still probably be spending way too long in any one area to have it feel like a story is unfolding. I 100% agree with that. Maybe just have a huge city or two (I still wish we could've explored all of Midgar :() and a Gran Pulse type area, and then the rest of the areas can be pretty linear.
On those big turtle things, there are two types. The big guys with chains all over them, and then smaller ones. I can kill the small ones. Big ones are impossible.

When walking around Gran Pulse you have to be sure that, if you see an orange target on your mini-map, you step on it to trigger cutscenes. I found them to be super cute.

So I just did the 7th mark for the second waystone and killing a bunch of baddies along the way. It's good fun. I figure doing marks is a good enough way to explore for now. I have absolutely no idea where the next Cie'th stone is, though.
Man, Gran Pulse is kicking my ass at the moment. Did anyone have real trouble with Mark 7/The Undying? I died the first time and then for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to use a sentinel, which didnt really work because the marks most damaging attacks a AoE anyway, but didnt want to restart, which meant I literally spent like 20 minutes duking it out on the edge of my seat, nearly dying every couple of seconds lol.
I should have used some different Paradigms I think.
Its gonna take a long time for me to level up by the looks of it.
Im really enjoying the game so far, including the difficulty. My few gripes however are the before Pulse it really was extremely linear (even for a Final Fantasy, which might go as far as giving you the ILLUSION of non-linear gameplay)
Also, does every little trash mob have to take 2+ minutes? I know they wanted every fight to be tough, but then maybe they should have lowered the number of fights a little with better rewards or thrown in a few more quicker battles.
I wanted something to break up the sheer exhaustion of playing this game. Ultimately though, it feels really rewarding.
I've found there have been quite a few quick battles. Did you 'dodge' many battles? I didn't, and I never really had trouble with finding a quick battle or two. It's nothing new, grinding, really. There are always hard battles to be had, though, which is possibly the difference - usually in FF's you can always level to the point that you'll be able to not think much and just battle lots of lesser enemies like crazy to get some items or something. This time around there are level caps, so to speak, which stop you from really being able to do that (although I found when I was capped it was easy to walk through a lot of battles).
Mission 7 being Bituitus the Pillager... I thought he was easy. Uhh, Cie'th are weak against magic so go nuts with that. I just killed Geiserio too, which I highly recommend doing. Super fun. I was all nervous 'cause the game had a pretty big warning that it was going to be hard, but it was easy. Guess I killed more munchkins than I thought. :o
Some of the descriptions for these missions are lulz.

I've finished all the missions that I can so far and moved onto the tower. Talk about DULL. I've really enjoyed chapter 11 so far but this is just boring.
The tower is super boring. I hate all tower dungeons.
I loved it, purely because of the ease of which you can get 8000CP for dispatching five or so robot things which are insanely easy to stagger and kill.

So I've explored close to 3/4 of the Expanse, mostly while doing Marks. I found a couple of treasure chests which I may never actually get, considering they were guarded by Giant Dinosaur Thing and the other by two behemoth kings. The latter may be beatable, but I engaged the Giant Dinosaur Thing and it stomped its foot and my party died (Lightning survived a few rounds while being in the air during her attack).
At the rate I'm playing (I didn't do much more than three marks today), I may never leave Gran Pulse. :p
Finally onto chapter 12 today. Whee.
Ok, im on Misson 10 still on Chapter 11. I got most of the Crystarium to level 4. Should I stay on gran pulse or continue the story? I heard that (and this is not a spoiler) after you beat the game that the crystarium is fully unlocked (to lvl 10) meaning its only possible then to do everything in grand pulse.
So I dont know what I should do.... Stay or go.

I did not know that. Like others, I had just assumed they were annoying spots on the Crystarium that were the last ones I'd access.
So I finished exploring the entire Central Expanse... it's not quite as big as it first seemed. Or maybe I'm just used to it. I found chocobos and cactuars, which was cool. The chocobos are awesome. I was at first irritated that I'd have to explore the entire damn Expanse again to find the buried treasure, but stopped when a rather cursory search while going to and back from my next mark netted me something like 90k with just 2 items.
Cactuars are tough little buggers, but I think I'm going to CP farm them a bit. They don't take that much longer to beat than King Behemoths (and are much less irritating), are worth 5k CP (1k more than KBs), and a chance to get a 12k gil drop from them. Not too shabby.
I'm on Chapter 11 now and I have been exploring Gran Pulse for what seems like hours. It's almost too big, but I'm not gonna complain. :} I've done missions 1-5 and number 8, don't quite know where 6 and 7 went. :p It takes ages to get from one point to another in this place though and I have no idea when I'm gonna go on to the next point in the story.
Also, where are the Chocobos? I want one. :(
You have to do a certain mission to unlock them. Well, to be exact you have to do one to unlock the area and another to unlock the ability to ride chocobos.

Animation quality wise. Theres usually like 3 different styles of cutscenes: FMV, In-game engine with mocap and then weird jagged movement reminiscent of FFX... The last one only really started happening on Chapter 11.Quote:

So these purple wyyerns, Amphisbaenas, are easy as hell and give 3500CP a battle. Pretty sweet.

Incase anyone was wondering where the best place to level up is when you first get to 11: (no story spoilers)

Best thing to do is farm those clusters of 6 robot dudes in the Mahabra mines or whatever its called, then go back to the 2 robos and 3 bombs, going back and forth. They get you around 5000cp a battle in a couple of seconds if you do it right.
Its the first turn to the left off the beaten path, just dont go right to the end of that or it will trigger a really hard boss fight.
No kidding "really hard." That bastard.
ETA: Fun fact~ Chocobo riding makes me motion sick. Uuuuugggghhhhh...

I have a question about the cactuars in chapter 11. So the first time I fought one (in that one semi-hidden place by the Giant Dinosaur breeding ground), I got a cactuar doll drop. I've fought a fair amount since then, even equipping the item that increases the chance of getting items, and have received none since. Was it only that one time you receive that, or is it just a fairly rare drop?
I got one from the treasure bubble in that dinosaur area. I haven't fought any cactaurs though.

My main four are all evolved but not maxed to the second evolution part.
Whatever though; the battles are already ridic easy as it is.
The future ones won't be unless you do some pretty big spending, I'm finding.
Just beat Hecatoncheir. I don't know who to choose for my party! I always use Fang and Lightning, but I'm torn between Hope, Vanille and Sazh. Hope is really strong but he totally cramps my style with his lame-ness. Vanille doesn't seem to fit in very well yet battle wise, and her constant orgasms are driving me crazy. Sazh is generally quite weak but he is a good Synergist and he fills the gap in my party well, whilst being much cooler than Hope is. I will probably go with Sazh. Any suggestions?

For cool, go with Sazh.
For tactics, I'd recommend Hope.
EDIT: actually, with Lightning and Fang, there are legitimate concerns with using Sazh because then Lightning will be your only healer without spending a ton of CP (Sazh is Com/Rav/Syn, right?). I also use Lightning and Fang, and I chose Hope so I could use him as a main healer (with Lightning as backup) and a Synergist.
I think you should go with Sazh. Like you said he's a good SYN and that was pretty much his role 90% of the time for me. He may be weak compared to Hope in the magic category but he has much higher health and if you're only using him as a SYN then his magic/strength weaknesses don't matter. That's just me though.
Edit: My party comprised of Light/Sazh/Vanille though.
But Hope is so lame. There I was, looking all badass, and BAM! Hope whips his purple banana/boomerang out and half strafes, half skanks sideways looking like an injured chimpanzee. His comments are also boring when he walks around. :p I'll see how I go though.Quote:

End Chapter 11 boss: (SPOILER)So you've been given the "overplot" to the game in two conversations with this guy, and he just tells it to you. Is it just me, or is that lazy-ass writing? Not a terribly difficult fight, just lengthy as usual. Also, FINALLY a crystarium expansion. I had a few hundred thousand points to spend, and in one go got all the useful new abilities available. Also, WTF at that stupid Cie'th stone lying back down; I thought it was going to be a very convenient teleporter. :mad2:
Is there a way to get back to Pulse from Cocoon before endgame? I probably should go all the way back to Oerba's teleporter to do some more missions and stuff.

I have switched my team to Lightning, Sazh, and Vanille now that Vanille has Stopaga as a Medic. Sweeeeet.
I use Lightning, Fang, and Hope, and I think all three of my characters have Stopaga... on three different roles. O_o
Yeah all of my characters (except Snow) have it, but Vanille's the only one who has it on her main role. I miss Hope already though; damn porno Vanille.

It may be technically possible, but some stuff you're going to want more of the Crystarium unlocked before you dare to take on. There's a teleporter in Oerba, the last stop in chapter 11, which I used to get back to the Steppe because I didn't want to leave (more Crystarium unlocks at the end of chapter 11, too).

You can do a lot of the stuff on Pulse before moving on to Chapter 12, but some of the Mark missions, especially for the Titan's Trials are probably beyond the characters' stats or patience of most players until later.
You can definitely 5-star at least 41 of the 64 Marks (1-26, 28-38, 40, 56-58) before leaving Chapter 11 though, as well as get all the milestone awards in the Chocobo digging game, and pick up all but maybe 2 or 3 treasure spheres (a couple are being guarded by some adamantoise-types I decided not to bother with).

Just beat Barthandelos at the end of Chapter 11. Took me two tries each lasting at least 20mins, was that not the most drawn-out battle ever? :cry:
So I finally advanced to chapter 12. I've a bit past the first boss. When you hit chapter 12, it's right back to obnoxiously linear. If only there was some sort of middle ground for the chapters other than 11 between "straight narrow path" and "huge expansive area."

Haste for the entire fight makes a world of difference, as does keeping debuffs up on Barth. Seems a Saboteur can be a good replacement for a Commando while you're building the Stagger bar.

Actually seemed more efficient to me than trying to have one character responsible for keeping the party up for much of the fight.
Hmm I didn't think to use Sazh. I haven't been using him much, mostly just keeping him as a Super-Synergist, but then I have Hope to do that in my party already. The first time I fought him I ha been using Delta Attack - Mystic Tower - Combat Clinic (2 x Medics) which proved quite effective til he cast Doom. Then I just went crazy at him with Relentless Assault but didn't make it in time. The second time he didn't cast Doom :D I might try it again to improve my star rating! Is there any way to remove the Doom counter?

My god is this Chapter a great breath of fresh air for once. I'm all sad that this is mostly a repeat of FFX when you get to the Calm Lands after walking that simple road for 30+ hours. Damn you SE for not making a more middle ground. :p
I've also begun playing with some of the Summons. I've decided that Odin kinda sucks, Bahamut is overpowered and Alexander is just god like with Hope. Still need to try Shiva and Byrnhilda.
My party is Hope, Fang and Lightning but I'm thinking of switching out Hope and Fang for Snow and Sahz. I might use Vanille but her battle cries were getting on my nerves in the previous chapter. I wonder if the script actually called for the character to make every noise that comes out of her mouth that isn't dialogue should sound like she's having an orgasm. I thought jail-bait Rikku was bad.

They feel exactly the same in terms of design (not surprising since its mostly the same team) with the exceptions of towns, but towns were moot gestures in FFX, you never needed them and you basically wandered them until you talked to the right person to advance the story which is pretty much what happens in XIII. Question for those who have completed the game: After finishing, did you CP grind to get all your characters' Chrystariums maxed out in all roles? Should I do this now while at the end of Chapter 11? Or after completing the game?

If your characters are reasonably well-developed, you can farm Bituitis (Mark Mission 7 I believe) in the Archaeopolis part of the Massif zone for the Bomb Core x5 mission reward. They have a very good EXP value, and Bituitus might drop (rarely) the Tedradic Crown or (very rarely) Tiara, which can be sold or upgraded then dismantled for other good stuff, including Hermes Sandals/Sprint Shoes.
Bituitus is close to the C'ieth Stone, and once you accept the mission the first time you have no other enemies to deal with. The battle itself takes 30 seconds to no more than a minute for a good party.
Conceivably you could upgrade every item in your inventory, in its original form, to its max level before leaving Chapter 11 with very few money issues and maybe a long evening of farming. You will have a problem affording the catalysts for the more evolved forms though, at least until the sidequest I believe Raistlin was alluding to. Do as many Mark missions as you can, dig up stuff with a Chocobo, and open every treasure sphere you see -- that will get you some catalysts for a few of the weapons or good accessories until then.
I'm mostly trying to do missions so I can find one that drops decent loot. If I had Vanille's death spell I could hunt the giant Adamantoises and get their drops but I have a feeling that won't happen anytime soon.
I'm just a bit disappointed cause I have barely used the Weapon system and have made it this far. I think the concept was neat but the execution is definetly lacking since you really do need either gil or enemies to start dropping more than 2 or 3 of their loot items per battle.
If I had know cash would be this hard to get, I would have stayed in Chapter 9 longer and farm the hell out of the soldiers til I maxed out gil or something. :(
Editga: I haven't sold any of my catalyst items (read the description and figured it would be safer to keep them), in fact I still have about 1 of every loot formed. Thanks for the tip on the Bomb Cores though. Now I just need an easy way to farm Barbed Tails or one of the other low tier loot that raises the XP Bonus.
I got a Cuactar Doll from a treasure, I have yet to get one from a battle. :/
For less than 3,000 you can buy enough stuff to get up to a x3 multiplier. Not to mention just from running around fighting stuff I usually have a backpack full of random biological parts that I can stuff into an item for XP bonuses.Quote:

Its suppose to increase the chances of drops, especially rare drops. At least in theory. I tend to get more stuff from doing poorly in battles than when I got 5 stars. Go figure. :eep:
I think 0-stars increases your chances of getting shrouds (Aegisol, etc.). But you're better getting the specific rare drops from that monster if you get more stars. Higher stars also means more TP regeneration, if that matters.Quote:

I've been spending my days farming Mark Mission 7 for his bomb cores, I think I'll collect 100 of them and then sell all of them for the gil then farm another 100 for XP for my equipment and weapons. I've really been meaning to start maxing out my accessories. Its all great for XP for the Paradigms as well. :D
Personally, the easiest way for quick CP was, IMHO, to ambush that Behemoth King near the save point where the two monsters are fighting (Behemoth King and another one). You get 4000 CP for a fight of 18 seconds or so, and you just have to walk a little bit away for it to respawn, so you can ambush it again, and again, and again. I farmed 200 000 CP like that in less than an hour. Of course, the loot drops aren't the greatest, but every coin has two sides.Quote:

You actually get 6600CP! I did this for a few hours! I wish I had a growth egg equipped as it would have doubled my CP, but 6600CP in 12 seconds is pretty darn good. Am I explaining this wrong? My trick isn't about the Behemoth on Wolf-thing. Before those two, there is a save-point. And around that save-point, a lone Behemoth King wanders. It's that one I'm talking about. You can ambush him easily for 4000 CP, and he respawns after you walk out of view (takes about 5 seconds). That's quicker then the Behemoth-on-Wolf, and it's a safer battle. ;)
At my level of power HNNNGRF, they're just as fast as each other. So it's kinda like a volley of death.

Really, nothing's been going well plotwise for me since Chapter 8 and I'm having a hard time justifying why I should continue moving forward. I started finally going towards Oerba but now I'm a bit hesitant cause I'm concerned that the game's story will sweep me up and then I won't be able to enjoy Pulse again until I beat the game.
In concerns of upgrading equipment, I've been maxing out my parties primary weapons but sadly I lack the transformation items needed to make them tier two (though I have done it with a few accessories) and lord knows I don't think I'm ready to grind for money needed to buy what may or may not be the transformations items featured in the shops.
I also hate Giant Cactuar... :cactuar:

I was really confused by that FMV. First thing we see is Snow going out of his way to save the guy then first ran off the road, then next thing I see is the party slaughtering the hell out of the rest of them.
It's as if stopping the race is part of their plan.
1. Go back to Cocoon
2. Stop the race
3. Stop the cavalry from killing Orphan

The Cie'th stone of mission 10 is close to the Cie'th stone of mission 1. There is a large rock where some flan monsters are. And there is the mission 10 Cie'th stone as well. The mission 10 monster itself is next to the fighting King Behemoth and Megistorium where the best training spot is.Quote:

Chapter 9, 10, and what I've played of 11 has basically killed most of my interest in the plot at the moment. Its going to take one hell of a comeback to make the story good again.
To be honest, I've been having issues getting into this game from the start. Due to homework and work I haven't been able to get back to the game for awhile but what really bugs me is that I don't seem to mind that. :(

I finally got to the Calm Lands or whatever it's called here. It's pretty cool to see that wide open plain to explore, and all the feral creatures running around. I did a couple missions but the rewards aren't that great so I just moved on with the story. I prefer games like FFXI where you have like 12 equipment slots and each one can boost different attributes. Just getting some accessory or a couple upgrade materials from these doesn't really pique my interest.
I also attacked some of the bigger enemies and won so that was pretty neat. :) No way I can beat that AT-AT walker thing though.
The story is obviously where the focus is so that's where my focus will stay. And it's still good. Nothing has changed with respect to the crappy NPCs but so far the main storyline and amazing visuals make up for it. I'll probably come back and do some of this stuff after I beat it but I can't see myself completing every aspect of this game like I did with the previous games.
I did a lot of the missions early in chapter 11 as just an excuse to explore the Archylte Steppe and the rest of Pulse more.
I agree that the equipment system is kind of oversimplified. I would've liked more variety, as well, which would have required more stats. The multiple accessory slots tries to make up for it, but I end up, with the exception of specific fights, for the most part just putting strength- or magic-increasing items in there anyway.
I really like the synthesized abilities when combining accessories/weapons and I wish there were more of them. Currently I put Axis Blade on Lightning along with the First Stike accessory to give her a 10% haste boost.
I think one of the problems I've had with the upgrade system besides the counter-intuitive gil/loot system needed to level weapons; is that everything needs one of the transformations items to make it move to the next stage. These items themselves are rare to acquire in the game's story and horribly expensive in shops. It would have been nice if the transformation items were exclusive to the weapons (at least I would feel its justified) or to a few obviously overpowered accessories. Let everything else just level up naturally and evolve when it reaches its next step.
I also agree the equipment/stat system is terribly oversimplified and really restricts the player in making useful party setups with equips (something I feel it borrows from X-2 and Crisis Core). I sorta noticed this when dealing with Hope cause the only way to keep him alive in longer battles requires timing buffs and heals. There is very little means of protecting him from heavy hitters with equipment. All you can do is level up HP accessories and overload him with it but those slots should be better used for raising his magic. I'm not asking for him to have "armor of invincibility" or anything but at least some equips that can better help him counter tougher enemies. Some of these items do exist but then you run into having to deal with the upgrade system cause most of them are terrible when first acquired.
I feel XIII should have handled accessories like they are in Dissidia. Instead of just a handful of slots, give me ten by the endgame so I can make some more meaningful choices. You removed armor from the game, the least you can do is give me more accessories to play with to help me twink my party members.

Anyway, I reached Oerba today... not what I was expecting. (SPOILER)The wasteland part doesn't surprise me but how high tech it was does. Makes me seriously question Vanille and Fang's clothing choices.
The tower proceeding that place was tedious but at least I got a few decent items, the boss was a joke as well. I had a harder time dealing with the Centaur monster in the tower than the boss. I also question why the tower was really there, the game doesn't bother explaining its purpose and it has no past history anyone can remember... Kinda felt like a waste of time to me.
(SPOILER)I actually made it all the way to the final boss of the chapter and now I have one minor spoiler question to ask those who have finished the game. Can Orphan only be taken out by a l'Cie and all other human efforts are a waste? Cause Dysley's whole speech in Oerba does not make any sense. If Cocoon is doomed due to the battle between the the Calvary and Sanctum and the Calvary are going to be manipulated by Orphan, why is Dysley telling your party all this? They achieved their goal of destroying Cocoon, why are they telling the party knowing fully well that they have the means of ruining the whole plan as l'Cie? Please for the love of god tell me that this is part of some nefarious plan you can't tell me cause it will ruin Chapter 12 and 13 cause if it is this straightforward then XIII has truly won the award for being the worst written entry in the series.
I don't need details, I just want to know that what (SPOILER)Dysley says is a trap and their is unknown circumstantial evidence that makes it so the party has to be involved. Just a simple conformation is all I need cause I just about decided to stop playing this game last night cause of this revelation. I'm beginning to feel XIII would have been better off if it ended in Chapter 9.
That is one of the few thing in the game that actually makes sense. And trust me, if you don't beat an FF title you will regret it forever. I quit on FF8 right when I found out you couldn't get into any of the cities on disk 4, and I really regret it. Because now when I am slamming the game I can't in good faith claim to have played the entire thing.Quote:

I was totally thinking the same thing. Looks to me like they started with character models they liked, then went and designed the world independently. But then again characters first and fill in plot later to suit them seems to be the name of the game for this title.Quote:

You spent dozens of hours leveling and the boss after becomes a cakewalk? Of all the legitimate gripes about the game, I don't feel this is one of them. It is true of any titles. Pacing of sidequests that encouraged you to do this... well that is another story. Though we can re-open the sidequests during/after game discussion after you are done. :)Quote:
The tower proceeding that place was tedious but at least I got a few decent items, the boss was a joke as well. I had a harder time dealing with the Centaur monster in the tower than the boss.

I plan on finishing it, I'm just probably going to rush through the rest at this point and get the ending. I'm just still blindly holding out for some miracle revelation that will make the game redeemable again. God I hope the ending is bittersweet.Quote:

I really haven't been power-leveling that much and with the level cap I felt it would keep me from beating the crap out of everything so badly. I still don't even have a tier 2 weapon yet cause I can't be bothered to grind for the gil needed to purchase the transformation items. Even then, I've only maxed out maybe three tier 1 weapons and two of them belong to the same character.
I feel my problem with the boss and tower has more to do with my second observation below. ;)
I just question why its there. I kinda felt like it was simply a dungeon created to make going to Oerba take longer. I wouldn't have minded if it had a bit of a back-story, especially considering the whole deal with the statues and puzzles in the place. I'm guessing the Statues will probably come back during another Mark Hunt since they seemed pretty tied to them. I just kinda felt we could have skipped over it. I sorta felt the same way when Bismark got introduced in the Springs, I thought I was going to battle him, especially considering the dialogue from Snow and Lightning. Just finished chapter 11 - probably the only legitimately decent portion of the game so far. Some thoughts:
- I agree with the above two posters in that Taejin's Tower is flat-out pointless. What gets me really hard about this game is how certain elements clearly don't jive with others. Like, why can't Lightning jump over the bonfire blocking the objective when you're jumping all over the place anyway and doing flips? And why does activating the statues put out the fire? What? And what's with the statues cutting off Dahaka's tail? Is that their purpose? How come the mark hunts given by the statues require no effort whatsoever, with some spawning directly next to the statue itself? Did SE even try with this? It's so obviously slapped together that I think less of myself for being compelled to play through it. I've traded Star Ocean games back to stores for less than this. Star Ocean.
- The scene during the cavern interlude really got me. Team arrives out at a beautiful vista at about noon. Sazh suggests they just sleep here. Unnecessary FMV starts, showing Lightning and Snow at sunset and they talk about :bou::bou::bou::bou: we already know. Gameplay resumes - it's noon again. Did the team stay over night or what? Four years in development. What the smurf, SE. What the smurf.
- Oerba might be my favourite locale in the game so far. Really nice, although I totally assumed, like everyone here, that Vanille and Fang were real earthy types from a primitive culture. Still, really nice areas with great music and a great view. This is clearly supposed to be the Zanarkand arrival of XIII, but unfortunately unlike X, this game doesn't really earn the moment (X itself didn't earn very much, but the Zanarkand aspect of the story I always thought was very well done at least). Still a great area though.
- The story has lost me at this point. The datalog idea really hasn't panned out, and sometimes it seems as if the datalog is telling a different story than the cutscenes. The cutscenes make you think one thing, but the datalog suggests something else. The Ragnarok reveal that Wolf mentioned is the doozy, and the Eidolon battle with Fang just confuses the 'twist' more. Unforgivable. (I'm glad someone else has mentioned this, by the way, because for a while I was under the impression that I'd just zoned out and missed an important revelation)
- Barthandelus is the dullest villain ever. Is Cid's resurrection supposed to be shocking to the player? Why do I care about Cid? He had like three lines. He wins this spot in the plot by default because there are almost literally no other characters in this story. The 'twist' would have had the same impact had Hope's dad become president. Completely pointless and contrived.
-Mark hunts are fun. I loved them in XII too. Just a big fan repetition and busywork, I guess. Before moving on to ch. 12, I've completed 53% of the marks.
- Chapter 12's intro is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I've never experienced a game with such an imbalance between style and substance as this one.
Anyway. Hope I get to return to Pulse before the end of the game because Cocoon smurfing sucks. Can't wait to finish the thing entirely, actually. It should be illegal for SE to place a number after the words Final Fantasy.

Finished Chapter 11 finally after backtracking and unlocking some Chocobos for fun. Didn't bother fighting the Ochu that pops up in that one area... Restored Vanille's pet and finally got around to really using the upgrade system now that the game finally started giving me stuff like Platinum and Gold Ingots that can be sold for massive amounts of gil.
My main party of Snow, Lightning , and Hope all have level 2 tier weapons and I must say the largest drawback I've seen with leveling the starting weapons is the huge downgrade they get when transformed to level 2. I also got my main party a couple of Sprint Shoes on account of the crap load of Teatric Crowns (sp?) I got when I was farming Mark #7 and finally having enough gil to really play with the dismantle system.
I was going to backtrack and finish a few more Mark Hunts and maybe max out the three starting Roles for all my characters but decided that if I didn't move onto Chapter 12 now, I never would. So I'm starting Chapter 12 later tonight or tomorrow.
