Okay, I'm a friend of SolarGirl. Actually, I used to come here (Vorpal Blade), but I've been busy for a while, and have no clue what my password is.
I have no clue when International Coming Out Day is, but I came out a few months ago. I had been trying to figure out my orientation for a while, and finally realized I was gay. I've been a bit stressed lately, and thought that it might help to relieve some of that stress if I just came out. I was scared, obviously, but knew that my family really shouldn't mind. So I told my mom and stepdad (I don't know how my dad would react, so I haven't told him yet), and they were supportive, accepting, and all that. My brother was fine with it, and my sister sent me a really sweet email (I came out to her with one) saying she was abolutely fine with it. When I told SolarGirl, she gave me a hug and started singing the Avenue Q song ("If you were gay/ It'd be okay/ I would still love you anyway...") Thankfully, she only knows about one and a half verses; she can't sing. Like, at all.
So my fears were ungrounded, but I guess I'm just lucky to have such an accepting family.
Just thought I'd stop by and share so SolarGirl will stop poking me.

Throughout my adolescence I had a very super gay guy friend. Like really super gay.
In like tenth grade we're on the phone and he says he has something to tell me. But he's scaaaared. Keeps me on the phone for like half an hour, then finally says it... he's gay. I told him off for dragging out something that was public knowledge.

Also during high school, I dated guy on and off who was pretty damn gay. Really, it was more of a security blanket situation for both of us. He was kind of excessively adamant that he was not gay. In fact, I later found out he was telling people all these ~sexy~ times we had together, that we totally did not have. The sexy times we did have he seemed to have trouble even getting through.
It was cute when the three of us would hang out. My two gay boyfriends got along to well!
Anyway, we talked on AIM like six years later or something. He thought I hated him for dumping me, so I confessed that I had been seeing other people for several weeks before we broke up anyway. Then he told me he was gay and I said something along the lines of, "Duh, I told you that. It's half the reason I dated you; you were safe."

When I was younger one of my mother's many cousins was getting married, which meant her cousins from up north would be visiting. I was excited to see them, but she told me that one of them wasn't allowed to talk to anyone under eighteen for a few years, by court order. She tried to avoid telling me why, but after a while I got my mother to teach me the word "sodomy." Good times.

Another one of my mother's cousins (female) is pretty obviously gay. One day, my mother told me "Hey, [name] came out of the closet." I said "She was in the closet?" To which my mother replied "Apparently she thought she was!"
Someday I would like to see someone come out of the closet who isn't obviously already gay. Booooring.
My sister is gay :monster: I need more gay friends!
All I can think of is how awesome it would be if they combined this with talk like a pirate day.

I'm in the same boat as Shlup. Everyone I know that is gay either was out from the start, or else I had my suspicions anyway and it was a "I totally thought that might be the case!" (I'm not one to say 'I knew it' >_>;) scenario.
I guess it's just not a huge deal to me. Although obviously it is for them, so yay to them.

Only one of my best friends from elementary (k-5 grade school) school... he was gay I think that year, and the next... then after one summer was no longer gay, and liked guy things again..? Anyways, smurf it. Pursuit of happiness. If two (wo)men being together makes them happy, it shouldn't be a bother to anyone else. Who the smurf am I to cause a ruckus about it? my friend told me he was gay a while back and i was legitimately shocked
he'd been so afraid of peoples reaction to it he was a perfect actor. shame it was tearing him apart but he's happy now. HOORAH
I am an ex-gay survivor. I never came out while I was gay though, fortunately.
...what... how do you "survive" being gay? Gunshots and cancer can kill you. So those survivors actually survived something. Being gay cannot kill you, or even hurt you. It might cause other people to hurt you, to kill you, and you can survive those attempts. But one's sexual orientation is not at all detrimental to one's health any more than being left-handed. So while you might realize that you aren't gay, just as you might realize you aren't straight, it's not something you "survive." It's something you are. Or aren't. or a little of both.Quote:

My parents ALWAYS figured I was gay so I don't know why I waited so long to tell her. I must say that I'm blessed to have such an accepting and loving family who never really cared either way, and it's unfortunate that more families aren't like that.
