I voted Cliff.
You just had to, didn't ya? The battles aren't complete without the bassists, what next Rhythm guitarists, vocalists? Lol, Cliff forever, he was a god on bass RIP man.
Flea.
Nomatter who you put him up against, i'll still vote Flea, every time.
Except maybe if he was against Les Cleypool.
I just love most of the Basslines Flea's popped out in the past 20 years.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bfMdTlaZAE Cliff destroys even Flea in a skill contest. Too bad he died so early in his career.
Victor Wooten
yo guys, Bladen and Venom, these threads are great an' all but could you please add more than 2 choices from two mediocre bands, there are a possible 20 options you can add to polls, it would be nice if you could use them.
I would say Cliff here, but i much prefer Roger Waters and Steve Harris :choc:
It's a BATTLE between two bass players, get over it.Quote:

Oh yeah and your drummers list had SO MANY choices on it.:mad:Quote:

So what type of bassists, drummers and guitarists do you want in these threads Brian? Cliff Burton destroys Steve Harris though, Iron Maiden or not he loses to Cliff.
Is good.Quote:

actually for me it would be anyone in Wishbone Ash (throughout there history) who has played the song Sometime World, fantastic bass solo :choc:
That is just sheer falseness right there. Steve is a great bassist, who is an amazing song writer. Cliff is a above-average bassist at best, who is a mediocre song writer.Quote:

wow i think for once i am agreeing with Crushed Hope. Skiing conditions in hell are supposedly gonan be great this year :choc:
You only say that because Steve had more time to mature his skills as a bassist, he still is amazing, Cliff's career in Metallica only lasted about 4-5 years, he never had much of a time to prove his skill or get better. Steve is an excellent bassist, I agree with you there, but there's been more basslines written by Steve then by Cliff. I still stick to that opinion though. I'm just naughty with that type of stuff. for flea? Well I don't like indie rock all together and the guy hasn't done anything to impress me at all. Cliff just whacked up the bass beyond what a bass should sound like, his stuff sounds pretty well done, plus he shreds like a 220MPH demon.
thats just a crap way to try and prove Cliff is better, because he had less skill? :choc:
I'm saying he had less time to show his skills. Steve has shown his skill because he's been bass playing for yonks.
Thank you for saving me the trouble of typing that out.Quote:

Anyway, why in the hell are people dropping in and saying names of random bassists when it's a duel between Cliff Burton and flea? Sure Steve Harris is amazing but it isn't his battle, no matter how you take my opinion back there.
i think its just gonna be a repeat of the last two threads bladen. I think it's showing other peoiples favorite bassists, rely on the poll to show the winner between Cliff an' Flea
But that's not what the thread is about, it's off topic. This thread is about a bassist vs bassist, Cliff Burton and flea, not to state your favourite bassist. You can make another poll thread with favourite bassist if you want to.
ok bladen

:choc:
I find this pointless in the way that both of these bassists play two completely different styles of music.:choc2:
well then vote for the style you prefer :choc:
They're both bassists though. Every bassist has some sort of unique style that makes them them. It's just a simple bassist vs bassist thread.
Flea. Thats all there is to it.

you shouldnt just put your own two favorits against each other man as if you want others two deside for you whom to like better
I didn't make this thread though. Basically it's tough luck, I tried to tell Venom about it.
no but the drum battle was yours.
its was meant for both of you but the quoting was because what i said was to argue your words.
If you cant make up your own mind about wich you find better thats cool keep it that way but dont make others chose for you.
Gee, sorry about wanting input.Quote:

It's not the end of the world, I don't like Lars Ulrich or Flea at all. I made the drummer thread because they're 2 popular and different styled drummers. It's not as if it's law you know. If you want to name favourites do it in another thread, these threads are battles between 2 people, not 100. Basically it's tough luck no matter what is said. I don't care what you want in the threads, a thread is a thread, make another to your standards if that's what you want, it's just a bassist vs bassist or drummer vs drummer thread in the end, not bassists vs bassists or drummers vs drummers. Don't take this the wrong way, it isn't to falme you, I'm just giving you the point in the threads, this thread wasn't my idea, I made the drummer thread out of sheer boredom, nothing big to moan about now is it?
Seems as if Cliff is taking the lead over Flea.
I personally think it's a bit of a rubbish poll, sicne there are plenty of better bassists than either of those two. I voted Flea, but personally I think the best ever bassist (judging based on technical prowess) is Jon Myung from Dream Theater.
He is far from the most technical bassist.Quote:

Better than Myung?? I shall have to check these guys out - what bands are they in?
im sickened, where is lemmy!!!
im ashamed of you venom.
id vote flea cause the chillis are like one of the best bands ever!
That was cool, essentially a guitar solo on the bass before he jumps into "For Whom the Bell Tolls". RIP Cliff Burton.Quote:

For all the people moaning about how there's a lack of options. Just relax, it's not a forum rule, it's only just a battle between 2 bassists. Yeah there are better bassists these days, but not many of them can easily do what Cliff used to do, well there's no need to.
Some bassists sound better in their own ways then others, some have unique techniques that make them badass, others just suck beyond recognition but at least they try (me).
Once I get that bass guitar I'll upload it for you guys to see, then you can all laugh at me instead, I'm sure you'd all enjoy it. But there's always people better then other people.
Pastorius was also in Weather Report, was he not?Quote:

And I'm sure if they needed to, they could shred too.
I don't know who Kim is but Melissa is a pretty worthless bassist. Flea doesn't do jazz in a rock band, he plays funk styled bass because RHCPs were once a funk band. Also, Cliff is not a bass shredder, he was simply there for rhythm effects even with the few bass solos he had.Quote:

The fact she has a song named after her illustrates her notoriety.
As for your comment about Mellissa, I'd be interested in your reasons.
And what are they now? A MOR band peddeling out songs stylised to sell among teenage girls.Quote:

Clearly, that's GENIUS. The fact he's dead and on this list illustrates how people cannot speak ill of the dead just yet...Quote:

Kurt Cobain was rubbish :)
I don't like Cliff at all, he was solid but nothing special.
My reasoning for disliking Melissa, she recorded crap with Hole, didn't add anything to the Smashing Pumpkin, and released a crap album on her solo album. The bass work on those albums are overly simple and barely is noticable.
Tony Choy is another mention of an amazing bassist.
Oh yeh, I've heard some ELP and King Crimson and yeh i agree Mr Lake is good - somewhat overshadwoed by Keith Emerson in ELP though.Quote:

In any case, what's all this insinuation about Dream Theater having 'incoherent songwriting'??
Their songs are nothing but vehicles for solos and are typically emotionally lacking.
That is definitely not true. Seriously, if you think that, you need to listen to Octavarium (the 24-minute song at the end of the album of the same title) - it is my favouritest song of all, it's so beautiful, I promise if you hear it it will dispel any of these misguided notions that their songs are emotionless technical wankery. Admittedly they do have a lot of very technical solo passages, but that in itself is surely not a bad thing? Rite?? (I mean if you think that you're hardly gonna like ELP and PoS...)
I have heard it, and it is a decent song at best. That particular song, Pull Me Under, and A Change of Seasons are the only songs of theirs that I really care for.Quote:

While I'll agree that "Celebrity Skin" wasn't good compared to "Live Through This", it certainly isn't "crap". I reckon its pretty good, just doesn't agree with the ears because of it's desire to be on the radio. It's deliberate mainstream-ness is a little bothersome. It's like they sing it and expect to see a million people cheer their name afterwards. A bit like The Killers :DQuote:

As for her album, it was a enjoyable clash between Pumpkins and QOTSA. I really quite enjoyed it on release, but its not a favourite now. As for noticable thing, perhaps you don't notice it because its not crap. Do you only like bass work thats in your face and screams out to you? That doesn't define "GENIUS", it just defines "SHOW-OFF". Or just shows that other players are lacking. The bassist provides a backbone of a band, not the heart.
Neither. Roger Waters.
