First, do you know what Photoshop is? Because it would be your best friend for these kinds of things. Yeah, buy a copy of Photoshop, and learn how to use it, and you can create all kinds of things like this.

Yes, Photoshop is what you need for this. You'll also have to spend a lot of time getting good enough to produce results like these. ...though the second wasn't all that good.

Also, Photoshop costs a ton of money. Several hundred dollars if you buy an old version, the newest version is nearly 1000 dollars. A lot of money, you say, but remember that this is a tool for professionals. 3D modelling programs usually costs 3 times as much as Photoshop.

I doubt that. Maybe Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is a stripped down Photoshop sold for a much cheaper price, but lacks a lot of the professional tools. It would still be good enough for the average computer user though. If it actually was a real, proper Photoshop CS or better, I bet it was pirated. And sure, everyone does it, but it's not legal, and a computer store could get in some serious deep if they shipped pirated software with their PCs.

Also, considering the people Photoshop is made for, it's not really a rip off at all. Photoshop is rarely bought by private persons, but by companies or people who make a living using it. It's no different than a cab driver needing a car in order to make money. Developing Photoshop costs a lot of money too, which explains the high price.

Maybe, but I never liked Gimp myself. It was too awkward and chaotic. The quality of the effects are also better in Photoshop, I find.

Adobe is a software manufacturer, just like Microsoft.
Adobe makes Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Illustrator, etc.
Microsoft makes Windows, MS Office, MSN Messenger, etc.
So it makes very little sense to say "it's Adobe" in this context. Is it Photoshop Elements or is it Photoshop?

I've got Aobe CS2 (not just photoshop, tons of other programs too :p) Student edition legally installed myself, in fact :p. I usually just use my pirated PS7 anyway, cause it's more lightweight and still has the features I need.
