I can't see us waging interstellar war anytime soon, to be frank. Most Humans would simply not think the juice is worth the squeeze. I mean, we could go about genociding relatively easily - just glass every planet they've got from space, but it's hard to envision us doing that unless we get a Klendathu up ins. Can you imagine trying to pacify an entire planet? It would take, literally, tens of millions of men.
We lack the resources at this time, and paradoxically by the time we have enough technology to make such wars viable, we're quite likely to have other methods of resource production.
My vote on Humans in future space wars? If we're not fighting ourselves, we're not that likely to be fighting. If we are fighting, I think it more likely to be an ideological conflict than one of resources.
And on which leaders decide how to approach them (please God not Dubya!). I should hope that if they aren't hostile, we aren't.

also i think it depends on what state of development said aliens are in...are they behind us, equal, or more advanced? also do we discover them as a planet, or does NASA discover them, thus making them slaves belonging to the US?
