Yeah, I found out a couple years ago Shiva was male.
And then just last year that Bahamut was a gigantic fish so large that Isa (Jesus) fainted from the sight of it. Bahamut carries the world on his back, and is sometimes depicted with a hippopotamus or elephant head.
The transformation has begun...

Yes Shiva is in actuality is Male in Hindusim..However a little known fact is that He an also be a She when s/he wills it.

It's ironic because Shiva, in Final Fantasy lore, is an ice goddess, and you think she's 'hot'. Ice is cold, not hot. It was just petty wordplay. Don't hurt yourself, now.

On one hand this thread makes me want to come out of the virtual closet about this and admit that I'm not normal. However, I'm also wondering if the OP was trying to come out or not... so I'm not sure to agree with him or keep quiet...

Shiva makes me laugh.
I think it really IS Shiva. He's a major trickster god, in some stories. He usually shows up as male, but he can be hermaphrodite or even put on a female avatar when it suits him.
I think he's having the last laugh with all the FF fans worshiping his blue booty!
My theory, corroborated by nothing whatsoever, is that when Square was creating Summons early on, they were grabbing mythological figures a lot more randomly than they do now. Someone said, "Shiva, there's a good one!" Someone else looked at an icon of Shiva and mistook his girlyboy hips for a girl, not understanding Indian art styles (here's a typical icon of Shiva). They got the BLUE part correct, but then they went with ice (it was supposed to be poison that turned him that color) instead of fire!
And the rest is history!
That, or else when FF first introduced Shiva, the game didn't give a gender, and later the game designers assigned one without realizing it was a particular god.
The one that startled me more -- I am very silly -- was the horse Odin's riding in FFVIII. It has six legs. In Norse myth, it has eight! I suppose that was too difficult to animate.

Rodarian, do you have any reference for a Norse Shiva? My grounding in Norse mythology is weaker, but as a mythology buff -- in fact I'm working on a graduate degree in mythology (want fries with that?) -- I am intrigued. That is not one I've come across.
