Yep, at several points he uses separate parts of the big sword, detached from each other - during the Forgotten City fight, against Bahamut, Kadaj and Sephiroth. It's actually quite rarely that he ever uses the entire thing with all its component swords integrated.Originally Posted by Raistlin

The Buster Sword is (I'm assuming) made of a far heavier material than the Fusion Sword, meaning that he'll probably be incredibly unwieldy and would've been an easy target for Kadaj and gang.

He's reguraly wielded the Buster Sword with one hand even twirled it around like it weighs nothing at all. But it would still look ridiculous.
I believe he also used a sniper rifle in Crisis Core. Perhaps Cloud could use the buster sword and the sniper rifle instead of the fusion sword?

No, Zack used a Sniper Rifle, not Cloud, and why would Cloud use a Sniper Rifle, a purely long-range weapon, with the Buster Sword, a purely short-range weapon?
