Default Georgian Olympic athlete DIES during practice

Olympic luger killed in crash | NBC Olympics

Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luger, was killed during a practice run for the men's luge event. He was going down the hill at about 90 mph when he crashed, flipped, and hit his head on a steel pole. And what's more sad that this was supposed to be his Olympic debut; sadly, that will not happen.

The Georgian Olympic Team initially decided to withdraw, but later decided to compete to honor him, and the opening ceremony will be dedicated to him.

I saw that. It was a terrible accident.

I'd be lying if I said I knew who he was, but geez, he had obviously done very well for himself to reach the pinnacle of his preferred sport. He'll be sadly missed in that respect.

And good on the organisers for dedicating the opening ceremony to him.

This story made me so goddamn sad and I have no idea who this guy is. I just thought of like him and his people all excited for the olympics and stuff and he’s like and then he dies there. :(

He made his dream though. Maybe he didn't get to compete, but he was an Olympian. Massive props to the Georgian team for competing, and I'm sure his memory will make them out perform themselves.

It's a horrible thing to happen at such an event, but all of those events are freaking dangerous. It takes courage to do that day after day and it sucks that this poor guy lucked out

He managed to rise to the top, only to die at the beginning of his career. He was only 21 years old.

Do you work for some news outlet?

An unfortunate accident, but I think everyone will somehow manage to get through the Olympics.

I don't work for any news outlet, but I still like to post some news events on this forum.

The saddest thing of all was that this tragedy was preventable. He didn't have to die.

His comrades have decided to honor him by continuing in the competition.

Preventable by making the track safer, which they have done now.

It's really sad that there must always be a FATALITY to get sports organizers to make these events safer.
