First time playing the series on the PSP. Started with the first game:The first departure. I'm enjoying it but the battle sys. is a bit repetitive. Also the story seems a bit childish :/

Didn't know they remade the first one in the series - I tried the SNES version but yes, never finished it because it was so tedious to play for some reason and the story didn't feel very gripping at the time![]()
Actually they remade the first and second one for the PSP. Pretty sure i'll finish this cause it's preety easy.
I'll tell you now straight up: Do NOT play Star Ocean for the story or characters or development or anything like that, unless you are reveling in the terribad. They are abominable. But so abominably bad that they loop right around into completely awesome and hilarious.
I love the series despite its best efforts to change that. SO2 is by far the best.
...except SO4, which just plunges deeper into the depths of abominably bad than is theoretically possible, until there is absolutely no light left to be found and you just want to drag the characters right out of the screen and smash them to bloody pulps.
Seriously... practically every single scene in that game is embarrassing to look at.
SO2 and SO3 are awesome games though.
Oh man. I've only played 'Til the End of Time, but the twist at the end of that.![]()
Once i finish with this one i think i'm going to continue to play the series.....hope 2 and 3 are good tho'.
you can download a universe difficulty save for the first one. Universe is fun.. wipes the floor with you at first but when you find a way to survive it is that much more satisfying.
Star Ocean 3: Till The End of Time is the only game that has retroactively ruined a video game series for me. I find it really hard to enjoy any game in the series because of the direction that the series took after that third game. I enjoy Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution for their gameplay, though, but like other users have implied, the series' writing leaves a lot to be desired.
I believe in the power of humanity.
Star Ocean 4's dialogue was so bad that I would turn off all the lights, lock the doors and build a fort around my television so the glow from my TV wouldn't give me away. I wanted the story, but I would spend more time skipping through it than I would any of the other games. The only one I have left to beat/play is the second one. I don't like how it starts off for some reason.
The "twist" in SO3 is just a kick in the balls. However they're still pretty fun.
I enjoy the Star Ocean games. Yeah, the writing sucks... but oh well. My favourite part of playing SO4 was playing it with my flatmates around, especially when Lymyle said anything. The anger! Wonderful.![]()
