I have killed and butchered animals for food. It is fine to know how to do it, but we live in a world where other people can and do specialize in such work. People who get upset about animal treatment get upset for one main reason: in a society where we have a specific body of workers who slaughter animals, most other people only interact with animals as pets and we tend to build relationships with our pets. These most other people thus have empathy for most other creatures because creatures are pets, right? When Balto the Dog comes in a collar and plays on the couch and Sally the Cow comes ground up in packages at the supermarket, it is easy to see where the ability to make fine distinctions have been blurred because there is no need; it is clear-cut by that point.
