    Default Proteus: Not a Game?

I have long desired a game that focused heavily on exploration, and I must concede that this game is right up my alley. Anyone intending on getting it?

Also, to carry on Gamasutra's question at EoFF - is a game without any functionality short of exploration really a game?

For me, I say yes. The objective is to explore. Is there an end? No. But there's no real end to Hide & Seek, either. Perhaps they should add a Hide & Seek minigame to Proteus someday.

Seems like a great little game, and a fascinating concept, but unfortunately my PC can't even handle the minimum requirements.

Yeah, it's a game... but does it really matter?

I like the concept well enough, having explored in open world games that do have objectives. I don't find the visual style of Proteus to be very appealing though.

    There kind of is.

Not by the rules we used to play with when I was a kid. The game just kept going until people got bored.

This is the reason I don't get PC games.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

This is how I view Minecraft. Since I have no inclination to build things, the only other option appears to be to explore things. But I've never given it a real go to see if it offered anything else (the graphical choice kinda turned me off). Though upon seeing this is only ten dollars and my humble little laptop would be able to handle it, I'm honestly interested in checking it out. I think I'll put it on my wishlist on Steam and probably grab it on impulse down the road..

With the addition of experience levels, enchanting, and "boss monsters," Minecraft has gone beyond the "build or explore" phase.

This game sounds interesting but the visual style kinda bothers me.

BoB, that's called ditching your friend in the woods.

We didn't ditch them! We just couldn't find them. Or alternatively, they stopped hiding and got called in for dinner and we didn't know. We would play hide and seek over a very, very large neighbourhood... I'm talking seven notably large houses with a lot of kids and a lot of front/back yards, a playground, etc. Good times.
