Thread: One More Turn

I was literally obsessed with Star Ocean - The Second Story about 5 years ago, I spent several summer nights in a row and finished the game from start to finish every time - and I even managed to get 8 characters each night!
My motive was pretty lame, I just wanted to unmark how many endings I had seen, but that was a good enough excuse to restart the game over and over.

I felt that time passed incredibly quickly during those playthroughs, I could be like "hm, it's probably 3 AM or something-but-whoops it's 7 AM".

By the way, I personally think it's a pretty pleasant feeling to become completely absorbed into a game and just sit back and enjoy the moment - it's almost a bit like becoming absorbed into a book.

Oblivion was the last game to really get me into that mindset.

Crusader Kings II before that had this mystical ability to remove time as a force in the universe. The very first play session I had ended with the sun coming up. Haven't had that in a while.

I often set "goals" when I play RPGs, when I decide to reach a certain point before I stop playing.
In Final Fantasy 10 I normally take my first 10-minute break right after Tidus is knocked off the Al Bhed ship, because this gives me the feeling that the ship accident actually did happen some time ago; then I keep playing until I reach the Mi'ihen Highroad, at which point I quit playing for the rest of the day.
You could think of them as "checkpoints" that I feel like I have to reach before I am satisfied.

    Agreed.

Just one more invasion. Didn't go too well? Heck, let's do another one. Did it go really well? Can't stop now, can I?

"I wonder what the next area/boss will be!"

    ...10 hours later...

    "How about the next one?"

    ...10 hours later...

    "Maybe one more..."

    ...1 minute later...

well, I recently played through Metroid Prime in one sitting, but that was only about 14 hours. towards the end my thought process was "ok i'm almost done just finish" and then it was like 7am when I finished

I am guilty of this with FFTA and also with The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. And obviously Civ IV.

Games that purpose a point. I by no means have to continue playing games like GTA over and over again, because it's sandbox and the point is usually part of the story. Whereas in games like RPGs or maybe the recent New Super Mario Bros where the point seems to be get a "perfect" (in the latter case THREE FRICKING STARS! BOOYAH! Thank you very much) I tend to play them again and again until I've reached perfection. If there's no perfect endgame purposed, then I don't have to devote a troutload of time to it.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.
