From what I read, some people did know about it.

It's always been listed in the FFIX Ultimania secrets section, but somehow no English speakers with the Ultimania (including myself, doh!) ever noticed it, so it's gone unknown by us for all this time, until someone posted about the Ultimania secret on the gamefaq's FFIX board, someone tested and confirmed it's real, and the collective minds of FFIX fans everywhere were blown.

Damn, but the sidequest looks boring as trout and the reward is something I could get by going to a synthesis shop, so I probably won't even bother with it.

I think it's very interesting that it took so long for the majority of people to find out this was there, but it does seem like a lot of effort for such a minor reward. Especially considering by the time you finish this, it's too late in the game for Protect Ring to be useful.

I know, right? I sat through all of that waiting for some sort of mass freakshow reunion and now I feel distinctly unfulfilled.
