Correction, you can't afford an international texting plan, and you will get charged if you respond. You probably won't for receiving them, but you may want to look into that to be sure.

Just get WhatsApp with your fancy new smartphone, it texts over ~the internet~ and doesn't cost you unless you go over your internet usage if you're using it over 3G or whatever. So if you're connected to a WiFi it is gr8.
