Of course, if I tried to pronounce it phonetically, it would be similar to BoB's (horrifyingly enough). My first thought was Miln-gahv-ee, though I thought I'd take a stab at the right answer.
So how is it said???
Mull-guy. Enjoy.
wait isn't that this guy?
You want some stupidly pronounced place names? Here we go.
Schuylkill Riverskoo-kle
Rensselaer Countyrenss-uh-ler
City of Rensselaerrenss-uh-leeeer (yes, this is pronounced differently from the above)
Kayaderosseras CreekKay-der-oss
DefreestvilleDe-freets-ville. yes, they switched the t and the s.
Voorheesvillevor-eez-ville
ChazyHo-va.i'm kidding. it does rhyme with Jay-Z though
It's nothing like "oregano" in emphasis. Not even remotely close.
OR-egg-un. As anyone who lives anywhere near it clearly knows.
Also, Spo-CAN.
The Men Who Wear Many Hats | Organ Trail
EDIT: I should note that "egg" is not pronounced "igg" like some people with extreme En Zed accents.
The difference between destressing the second vowel and eliminating it completely isn't exactly very clear cut. At least with a retroflex approximant r as I have, the transition between r and g brings with it a brief neutral vowel. (Who knows what happens for you crazy people with alveolar approximant or trilled or flapped or nonexistent r's. R is far too complicated a sound.)
I will say that when I actually say Oregon I intentionally delay the pronunciation of g to make the vowel more apparent, but in quick conversational speech, I could completely see Oregon and organ ending up with the exact same ultimate phonological production.
The real crazies are the one who make Oregon end in "gone". It seems to be mostly people who have never lived anywhere near Oregon. Like all these native Wisconsinites.
Umm guys I'm pretty sure the movie is called Eragon
Not only am I judging the fact that 1) this is a legitimate thread made by a reasonably (as in he knows how to clothe himself) smart person and 2) that this is even a question but also I'm judging that 3) you all have made so many posts arguing about it.
Shame. Shame on you.
Signature by rubah. I think.
lol macs having games
yeah, i agree with foa on this silly discussion being unnecessary. like all of the other ridiculously lopsided poll threads we've had.
i'm gonna go to organ to eat some marmite with a glass of soup on the side for drinking
The point of this thread was not to actually debate "Oregon vs. Organ," because as I heavily implied in the OP, it's not really a debate. The point of this thread was to demonstrate that it wasn't even a debate while giving us yet another reason to mock Shorty, which is something that never involves too many posts.
You would be so bored without me, birthday boy.
I would like to invite all non-Washingtonians to attempt to pronounce "Puyallup".
Poo-y'all-up?
