In trying to forget I had seen the movie, it seems I forgot which Spiderman it was as well.

Starship Troopers is what action fans expect Star Trek to be (and what JJ Abrams subsequently shoots for). There's mention (and display) of tech that's believably within the realm of human invention such as stun vests designed to react to lasers, basic armor that is light and functional while being more durable in a fight (except against bullets, knives, and the main enemy they now wear them to face), spaceships with steering wheels, bionic prosthesis, etc.
The depiction of humanity is more believable as a future version as we are nowhere near the era of peace so optimistically depicted in Star Trek (which is supposed to take place a mere 300-400 years from now). Granted, it uses an alien species as a trigger to militarize the entire planet against a common foe, but the fact remains that military service is basically a requirement to live a happy life unless you were born into a family that could afford to buy a star. Basically, the world reverts to its Medieval era only in hi-tech.
Tropes mentions that Dizzy was originally a dude and both he and Carl died pretty early on in the book. Hmm. I don't think I've ever seen Denise Richards naked. On that unrelated note... good night, folks.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

At first I thought the title said Super Troopers. Either way, I will watch.

Is this movie really from 1997? I thought it was from the 80's.

Watching tonight! The last time I watched this I was high out of my mind and the only thing I remember is (SPOILER)Denise Richards getting stabbed by alien buglegs and I subsequently freaked out.

Well, in many ways it's a 1997 movie with 1980's sensibilities.

    Perhaps. I don't remember any.

Also, I've heard this is an excellent sci fi book, and I've been meaning to read it. Anything that wins the Hugo award has got my eye for it.

Rob and I are watching this this weekend.

I love this movie, and legitimately think it is wonderful. Like, LOVE this movie. Seen it so many smurfing times. But I have to ask, because I've never found anything giving information either way--does anyone know if this movie was intentionally campy, or if it was made to be actually serious?

I think it's pretty obvious that it's intentional, and that's what makes it so great.

Not having seen any pro-war propaganda films/commercials, I think that's what it's supposed to emulate.

I haven't had the means to acquire the movie during the past week, so haven't seen it yet. Will try to fit it in this week!

My movie pick will be the 1976 movie Network.
