Thread: Should Japan just ban Hollywood from anime?

Default Should Japan just ban Hollywood from anime?

I never saw a Hollywood movie stemming from anime that was at least partially decent, mostly it was trout like Avatar the last air bender, basically totally horrible movies when compared to their sources.

Personally I think that Hollywood simply doesn't understand anime and should never again make movies from anime series. I mean I usually don't even like Japan's movies from anime because for some reason they never really try to make characters to actually look like they did in anime, but at the very least the story is usually somewhat decent.

What do you think about this?

Because the entire Anime industry is owned exclusively by the Government of the country of Japan.

So ignoring all the logical shortfallings of this question:

No, they shouldn't ban Hollywood from Anime. The Avatar movie introduced loads of people to the Anime itself. The movies aren't made to appease to die-hard fans, they're made for a broader audience and some of that audience may in turn, end up checking out the source it was based off. This isn't a bad thing.

Quite a few Hollywood films have borrowed bits of plot or drawn inspiration from anime with good results.
The Matrix -> Ghost in the Shell. Inception -> Paprika. Hunger Games -> Battle Royale.

Direct adaptations haven't faired as well, of course. Speed Racer was pretty average, Dragonball Evolution sucked. Maybe future attempts ought to put less emphasis on being kid-friendly. There are plenty of serious anime series and films that deserve to be adapted for a wider audience. Cowboy Bebop was supposed to have been in the works for a long time, but with Hollywood being all about marketability, I can see how kid's movies might be an easier sell than afro space cowboy.

But maybe all it'll need is just one good adaptation to get the ball rolling. Marvel Studios is on a massive high at the moment and it all started with Blade and X-Men.

Never said it's Japanese, but I felt like that one was the one people could know most about. They could easily see it simply doesn't work in the hands of Hollywood.

I don't mind borrowing plot stuff from anime as long as they don't call it that way just for one or two things.

I do agree that marvel movies are decently done, if anime adaptations were done at least at the same level, I wouldn't really complain.

Titling a thread "Should Japan ban Hollywood from anime?" and using Avatar: The Last Airbender as your example kind of implies that you consider it both anime and from Japan. xD Which it is neither. Yes, I am being ~that guy~

But, in the end, all adaptations tend to be rubbish. Blanket statement, whaaaaaaat. How many terrible video game adaptations have there been? That's right all of them. Book adaptations are often slated for being terrible compared to their source. Heck, a large proportion of comic book movies are bad. I enjoy some adaptations and not others. Some of them I enjoyed simply because they were terrible.

I don't think that this is a problem unique to anime adaptations, however I'm sure the cultural differences do not help.

Not really. I think everyone has a right to do their own version of things - there will always be versions you like better than others, and ones you feel were bad, but it's just different versions to me.

I actually quite like seeing how they do these to be honest, even if I don't like the end result.

Why is this restricted to anime? Personally, I think we should ban Hollywood from making adaptations to pretty much anything. You'd rather we just get more Twilight flicks? More Scooby-Doo movies? More 50 Shades of Grey? We can go on. There are some good ones, but not nearly enough, especially when we're talking about mainstream Hollywood and not merely the film industry as a whole.
My friend Delzethin is currently running a GoFundMe account to pay for some extended medical troubles he's had. He's had chronic issues and lifetime troubles that have really crippled his career opportunities, and he's trying to get enough funding to get back to a stable medical situation. If you like his content, please support his GoFundMe, or even just contribute to his Patreon.

He can really use a hand with this, and any support you can offer is appreciated.

No. Better idea: the people who own the rights should be more careful who they sell them to.

Bad remakes of things that are good doesn't make the good things not exist.

Yea this is a natural by-product of liking a thing. When people realise a thing has a lot of people who like it they are going to cash in. This is just what happens. Enjoy the original thing and maybe write a bitching comment on IMDB about how the unoriginal thimg is bad and then just let it go.

Banning anime might result in the loss of your hentai porn too.
