The ability to apply buffs to the entire party is very useful in games in which buffs can have a considerable affect, and in particular the ability to change the nature of the buff via gemstones is very cool. Definitely has a lot of potential, I feel, but often squandered.
I barely ever heal with items so I always need magic to cure my characters. Carbuncle has only killed me in battles.

Reflect has its moments, so sometimes useful for me.
I used it once in VIII to see what it did and that was it. Never found it useful.
I only use Carbuncle a little bit and not in each game.
Sometimes I use Carbuncle just for it's cuteness sometimes +___+
