I'd really like to see Tangled or Hercules make the list. Did you guys include Brave? That's another excellent and deserving film.
I know Brave is Pixar, but Merida is often included with Disney princesses, so. I mean, doesn't Disney own Pixar anyways? If not, their names on synonymous these days besides.

OVERALL SCORE: 6.5
Matt: So Tangled. This one comes out of left field for me because I have had a habit of not enjoying “Disney Princess” movies. Tangled for me is different though and hits at my #4 spot.
Rapunzel acts like a shut in teenage girl should act. Shy and timid. At the beginning of the movie when she captures Flynn and is super arrogant that she managed to defend herself against a home invader. She is blissfully unaware that anyone can be evil when she reaches the bar because she has never seen a person act evil before. The joy of seeing the festival. Taking a stand against Mother Gothel. It's all action that feel real which emphasises Rapunzel as a character. Intermingle this with the little scenes like her flip flopping between being amazed and distraught that she actually fled the tower make her my Favourite Disney Princess
Flynn too is brilliant. His level of characterisation is on par with Rapunzel as they both go on an adventure of self-discovery. Flynn comes to terms with the fact that there are more important things than stealing and getting rich when he has someone to protect. He still keeps his smug jackass attitude throughout which is amazing. Comparing that to Maximus who is just a start to finish badass pull it together really well. Funny how Disney Princesses manage to tame animals so well.
So right, this one may be tipped in the scales slightly, but Mother Gothel really hits a note for me. Until I was about 12 years old I had an evil stepmother. I have now become a Disney Trope. Lady Tremaine and Mother Gothel stand out as villains to me as I feel I've been in that situation. Being asked to do all the chores as a 10 year old without any thanks gets to you. Mother Gothel stands out as she is so very selfish. Every action she takes is in her own best interest with the exception of going to get Rapunzel the paints. That's one genuine act of selflessness, and it only comes about to get Rapunzel to shut up. It's not the same sort of worry you get from villains like Jafar where you know he'll make your life agony using superpowers, it's more you know she's capable of doing horrible things when she gets mad. That fear of the unknown is scary.
Tangled sticks out as my favourite Disney Princess movie, because everything seems so genuine (Well, exception that action scene at the mine). It all comes together for me in one brilliant movie.
It also has my contender for “Best Disney Song”
Shauna:I love Tangled. I went into it expecting to enjoy it, and I really did – it did not disappoint. When I watched it, I had a distinct feeling of Disney going back to a better place with their movies, a return to form, almost. Their entries in the 00s were not fantastic overall, but Tangled just ticked a lot of boxes for me in what I always enjoyed about Disney movies. Everything comes together into a fantastic package.
All of the characters are great. Rapunzel really grows throughout the movie, transforming into someone who will defend herself and will not be talked down to or made to feel stupid or that she’s constantly doing things wrong. The moment that this movie hooked me (not that the parts before were bad, they were great too), was when Rapunzel had escaped the tower and she was flipping between being the happiest person ever, and hating herself for being a terrible person and lying to her mother. It just felt so genuine – I know that I’ve mentally flip-flopped over things I’ve said or done in a similar way. It kind of just cemented this movie as something great in my mind.
Flynn Rider is hilarious from start to finish, and his interactions with Maximus are some of the best parts of the film. He is arrogant and egotistical, but he’s just about as amazing as he builds himself up to be. The joy of building a perfect persona, eh? He’s a good guy though, and that comes through when it needs to.
Villian-wise, Mother Gothel is sinister. We know that she only loves Rapunzel because of her magic, and boy does she really loves that flower! But yeah, what makes her really effective is the way she can be quite motherly to Rapunzel, but it’s always just… off. Obviously all the cruel and cutting things she says to Rapunzel do not fall under that category, those are just her being her true terrible self. But, other interactions… Oh that’s nice that she’s going to make a long journey to get some bits for paint! But we know as the audience that she’s just doing it so Rapunzel will stay in the tower and not try to run away – she needs to keep her precious flower close. I found her to be very well written. Also “Mother Knows Best” isn’t too shabby a song, particularly the reprise.
The set pieces in this movie are fantastic too. The Snuggly Duckling is amazing and is overall comedy gold. The entire mine battle? The most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. The entire stretch of being in Corona was beautiful – that music they played over the top of the dancing, and then the lantern scene… I tear up man. Every time without fail.
Yeah, it’s just a gorgeous movie, with just the right amount of heart. I could probably gush about it some more, but I'm trying to keep this concise! It’s definitely one I will go back to for years to come, and it deserves its spot in my own person top 10 alongside Beauty and the Beast and The Rescuers.
Also Rapunzel looked way better with blonde hair. Nothing wrong with the brunette look, of course, she just suited blonde way better.
