Over the last week, I've had no less than six missing people cases, each one of them more bizarre than the other. It all started with a regular phonecall. A concerned friend of one Loony BoB said he needed me to look into his disappearance. When I arrived at his home, the door was wide open, and it didn't look like anyone had been there for months. With one exception - a screen was on, with the game Final Fantasy XIV running all this time. A character with the curious name "The Bulge" was running around in their underwear, even though no one was using a controller. No signs of struggle or of anyone entering uninvited. It was as if he'd vanished into thin air.
The next case was equally bizarre. This time, I got an email from a concerned boyfriend who said Pike went missing. I didn't even need to go there, I already smelled it. It was the same -no signs of struggle. Except it wasn't Final Fantasy this time. It was Morrowind.
The case of Pumpkin was different, but it still carried similar bizarre traits. Her boyfriend called, the room she was in was empty. The characters from the game Trails of Cold Steel were constantly changing clothes on the TV screen. "They've been doing that ever since she disappeared..." sharky said in a shaky whisper, a tear streaming down his cheek.
For the fourth victim, I had to tavel all the way to Germany, but I wasn't disappointed. Things were getting eerier with every detail I learned. Apparently, Sephiroth started speaking Japanese in a really deep voice in the middle of the sidewalk. The person who told me about it pointed to the spot where they last saw him. All that was left was a handful of large black feathers. "He just sprouted a single wing," they said, "and flew away."
Back home, I got called again. Another missing person case. Everything was exactly the same as with the first three. Except this time it wasn't a TV or computer screen. A 3DS lay on the floor, the "B" button permanently pressed, leaving Litten in a constant state of being ready to evolve, but being unable to. Looks like Skyblade wasn't ready to give Incineroar a chance...
My last visit was at one Wolf Kanno's house. For a brief moment I thought I have stumbled upon the mastermind behind all these ridiculous events. His walls were covered in various maps with Japanese characters on them, points were drawn across, connected by string. At first I thought he had planned it all. I soon changed my mind. I followed the trail all the way to a pile of books. Books labelled "Ultimania", with various other game titles underneath. And that's when I understood - this man knew what was going on. He unearthed the conspiracy and was ready to expose it. And that cost him his life.
Thankful for the evidence he left behind, I gathered up the books, and took it upon myself to study them and see what he saw. Perhaps I could yet save them all...
