Is there seriously no discussion about how awesome this movie is? Please Correct me if I'm wrong.
I watched the movie last week and literally left the theater mesmerized. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart deserve some Oscar consideration for their performances. This is perhaps the best comic book/superhero movie ever made.
Please share you thoughts.
Well I just got back from seeing it. It was alright. It had some great fight scenes, and was very well written and acted. But I felt that the violence was a little too gratuitous at times, and the ending kind of sucked. There's nothing I hate more than a movie that ends with no conclusion to the film's primary plot device.
I've heard a lot of people say this, but I don't think it's anywhere near the best comic book/superhero film ever made though. It barely is a superhero film.
I like Kung-Fu.
The movie was excellent, and honestly, a Wolverine that doesn't delve into gratuitous violence is doing it wrong. Finally they got the guy who literally fights and kills people with forearm length claws right in that regard. If he weren't a superhero he'd be a slasher villain. And I'm not sure why you think there was no conclusion to the plot in that ending DMKA. (SPOILER)The already dying Logan manages to die protecting the mutant children who are now free and safe since the bad guys are all dead and can't follow them. Seemed like a pretty fitting end to me.
Where does this all fit in the X-Men continuity, by the way?
It's 2029, no mutants have been born in years and there's no more X-Men. All of that is explained or hinted at early on so it's not very spoilery.
I just saw it, not big into the Marvel verse or anything but it was a good action film. It had some really touching moments as well as violence aplenty. Sometimes the violence seemed a bit much for my taste, but as others have said this is Wolverine and the eponymous creature is a tough SOB. *shrugs*
I really enjoyed it! But my name is Logan, so it's kind of obligatory.

I really enjoyed it. Good fight scenes, some nice emotional moments... yeah.
I went in with little expectations. I heard some of the critical buzz about it, but I've been burned by so many Marvel films that I've become numb to hype. Deadpool was also very surprisingly good.
What script issues did you have with it Krissy?
DMKA, your assessment that it is barely a comic book movie is pretty damn accurate. That works in its favor. How many more movies can we watch where the plot always has some sky beam of destruction? (Avengers, Avengers 2, X Men Apocalypse and many others). As much as I love Guardians of The Galaxy and Deadpool, they had some pretty cliche endings. Here's a comic book film with a genuine buildup and real motivations for our characters.
I had no issue with the violence. The filmmakers said they were aiming for a hard R rating and it is well deserved. I can't be mad at it for gratuitous violence, mainly because I love everything Quinton Tarantino has touched.

the gang attack in the first scene of the movie seemed pointless we could've shown logan being tired in some other way.
the motel owner had no purpose in the plot other than to get called 'fat' by logan; the nurse could've told logan the exact same thing 'dont let her kill anyone' without that scene
having said all that this is still a tops movie and currently in my mind the best x men movie/wolverine movie for sure

Overall, I thought it was a good film. Very different, but still good. It did have some very major problems, though.
LauraFirst, why did they make Laura a non-character for the first two thirds of the movie? It really hurt her characterization overall. First she's a Helen Keller like individual, raised in a lab, cut off, with no chance to understand basic human interactions... And then all of a sudden it turns out that she's a completely normal person who apparently just decided to steal, ignore social conventions, and creep people out for the heck of it. So, instead of being someone shaped this way by their situation, she's just a jerk.
The other really big problem I have is the setting:
2029This was a VERY odd choice, in my mind. The movie is set twelve years in the future. Twelve. Yet, none of the setting makes sense or has any connection to our own world and timeframe. Maybe you could have made me believe that things happened this way up until the casino scene. Then that shows up all over Twitter and Facebook and whatever other social media we get, the authorities show up, and the entire attempt by the corporation to cover this activity (which is definitively stated as an illegal activity that was being hidden from the government) is destroyed right there.
This feels like a cyberpunk dystopia set far in the future, especially once they introduce commonplace corporate goons with cybernetic arms. None of it is grounded in our own reality. Now, in the reality of the film, it works. It creates a coherent and complete world, but it doesn't feel like our own.
For one thing, no one runs away. Yeah, you have guys with some cybernetics and prosthetic limbs with super strength, but nothing as ridiculous as say, the actual Cyberpunk RPGs (where people had carbon nanofibers woven into their skin, chainsaw arms, etcetera). These are, for the most part, normal dudes who are incredibly vulnerable to the mutants they're trying to take down. And these guys watch a single dude rip through a platoon without blinking and still think "I got this".
And, again, this isn't a government agency, and is, in fact, an illegal operation. These guys are hired thugs. They're there because they're paid to. Why the hell would any of them keep going? They've witnessed six or seven units entirely eliminated, and they still charge forward blindly. Why? The cleanup guys mop up six or seven mass murders and scenes of buildings getting completely ripped apart, and there are no whistleblowers?
It's a huge shift in world and tone from all the rest of the X-Men movies, which are based either in a historical setting, or in a reasonable facsimile of our own universe.
This new setting does work very well for the film overall, but it makes it nearly impossible to follow up from. I don't see how you can build a new universe around the new mutants or anything like that from this film. And, with it being set so close to the present day, it makes me wonder very much how they're supposed to continue the X-Men franchise at all. They have twelve years to transition to this new future, and after that... How do you make a film in this universe? How would a new mutants story work in this world?
If this was intended to close out the entire franchise, it would make sense, but that really doesn't seem like the intention.

Logan was heartbreaking for me to watch because I grew attached to the characters from the previous iterations (even if they weren't that good by most standards). In a lot of ways, it reminded me of the PS3/PS4 game "The Last of Us".

I liked this movie...but it still has the X-Men franchise stink on it and the more time passes since seeing it the less thrilled I am about it. I may be being extra hard on it though.
