Apparently, this movie was suppose to convert you into Scientology(ahemTOMCRUISE'SRELIGIONahem).

They want you to convert to Scientology, so when E.T.'s relatives arrives and destroys the Earth, they're gonna spare your life, because you're a scientologist.

I'm going to see it in a couple hours, but I have a feeling I'll like it a lot more than the movie they released in the 1950s or 60s, whenever it came out. Still, I'm sure the changes from the book will bug me. If I recall, the British army was able to take out a few "tripods" with simply a heavy cannon, so the Alien's power has obviously been amped up a bit.

I saw this the other day, and I really enjoyed it! I've seen the original... but I haven't read the book... I really should read the book.

I don't get why people don't like the ending...

(SPOILER)Is it cause it isn't full to the brim of Aliens getting blown out of the sky?
Truthfully, I really enjoyed the ending. Everything the humans did to try and destroy them failed, really, they had been defeated. And, the things that they had become immune to, the bacteria that doesn't harm them, killed the aliens. I just think that is amazing.

    OK, One question!

(SPOILER)Why, when Tom Cruise was about to be swallowed or whatever by the alien, did the guy try to save him? There must have been plenty of people before then, who got 'swallowed'. I mean, 5 mins before he was taken in, a guy was taken up.
Why wasn't there any: 'HOLD ONTO ME! I'LL SAVE HIM!'? It was only when Tom was getting taken away... Blah

The reason the power of the Tripods has been amped is because if they left them as powerful as they were in the book we'd have a fighting chance with our current technology.

Yuna: I think it's because he saw Ray jump onto his daughter to save her and then get sucked in himself.

Or that just gave a good reason for Ray to destroy a Tripod. Whatever takes your fancy.

Because it's either the guy was gay and fall in love with Tom Cruise... or because Tom was the main star of the movie. Folks, it's just a movie.

The reason people don't like the ending is because while these aliens were supposedly so technologically advanced and had studied us for so long they still for some reason failed to realize that they would need a gas mask in order to survive. That concept would work back in the 1800's when we really didn't know all that much about germs or how to protect ourselves against them yet. But in today's technology that concept doesn't really work anymore. And they should have changed the ending around a bit when they decided to set the movie in modern day.

Really, the movie would have been much more believable and not nearly as many people would be griping about it if they just changed two things around. The ending and the fact that they hid those machines underground for so long and for some reason we never discovered them up to that point.

If they did not have it that way in the book I wonder why in the world Spielberg decided to have it that way that the aliens hid them underground. I'm sure he knew that that would not be believable in modern times and would detract alot of people from seeing the movie once they found out how silly some of the plot holes are.

And just on a side note. The alien technology really isn't all that advanced in the movie. The only thing that really makes them appear so powerful is that force field that they have surrounding them that our weapons of today cannot penetrate. But I will bet in a good 100 years (maybe less) we will have weapons that are just as powerful as the weapons the aliens used in the movie.

I would guess that there is about the same amount of difference between the alien technology and us in the movie. As there would be between our technology of today and the technology of World War I.

I really didn't mind the deus ex machina ending. What left me unsatisfied was the fact that Robbie (a 14 year old boy) was able to not only survive walking into a freakin' firestorm of destruction, but was able to then perform the same extraordinary superhuman feats of survival that Ray was able to pull off. He even manage to do it faster than his father and beat him to Boston. What, how?

It seems almost like a compulsion with Spielberg to resolve every story with sickeningly happy endings. I don't care if that's how the book ended, it completely voided the impact of Ray's choice to let his son go in order to save his daughter. Total cop-out.

I hated Robbie living too. I actually shouted at the end when that happened I was so angry because it makes Ray's struggle utterly meaningless and him foolish comapred to his son which I loathed since the start because he was stereotypical broken home teen, which I dislike on a good day.

In good news, the film was action-packed and the aliens were scary and the siren striked fear everytime you heard it. The fact we only saw what Ray saw, and that was the utter destruction of everyone. The bit on the ferry was excellent.
I thought Dakota was good in her role, out acting the Cruiser at times.

A great film, but that ENDING... Arghhhhh.

    Nope.

Anyway, I thought it was a great movie, and I liked the whole thing. I was still wondering about some things afterwards, but my friend who's read the book explained it all so I was happy.
Boy am I an unfunny ass.

War of the Worlds' beginning was good. Then, War of the Worlds' ending was crap. It's ending was unreal. That's a positive, and a negative... equals... a negative.
