They can be seen twice, they are loyal companions. One would assume that is to the player, but 'our'? Could still be to the party or some other friendly group.
Essence: They are friendly to 'us'.

This seems visually describing more than anything else. Maybe we see them with friends on their side(s) and behind themselves in a battle? In a FMV? Or maybe simply in-game cinematics.

'What are they?' makes me think that maybe your going for just that, what they are, instead of who they are. For example, if the riddle was referring to Zidane, the answer would be Genome. This could just be me over-analyzing it though
My first guess is the Nero brothers (Benero, Genero and Zenero). Nero was mentioned in the New Testament, I don't know if it's more than once.
